Is it possible to mount the turbo oil return line on a custom drilled hole in the valve cover (SOHC) rather than the more difficult oil pan mount? what are any disadvantages/hazards to this idea? Thanks

You could, if you mounted your turbo much higher than your hood.
The oil is fed into a bearing the is spinning between 100k and 140k rpm, where it is whipped into a frothy mess. Then, only gravity can drain the bubbly oil into the oil pan. That's why everyone goes into the oilpan. Cuz it's the only way.

Thanks, that clears up some mystery for me. I will look around for some other spots with that in mind and then go to the oil pan if there is no luck. -John
