Hello,
Well I finaly decided to go KaT with a few fuel mods over Sr. and I'm looking for a T28 turbo setup. I want it to be a pretty powerful but not too powerful or expensive, needless to say I'm a poor college student. So I was doing some research on T28 turbos and I heard a lot of good things about the T28Rs (disco potato)*BTW why the fhk do they call it that*? I also heard good things about the T2871r. But when I was looking for one I couldn't pull up any info on it. Is it an actual turbo? Do you guys think these are the best bang for th ebuck when it comes to T28s? Can you suggest a better or best T28 Turbo. Thanks for all ur .02

Good choice on ka-t.
The reason you are not finding info is cause you are missing the G before some of the turbos like the GT2871R, GT28RS. Not all of the turbos have the G before them.
Disco Potato is just a nick name for it. I do not remember where it came from.
Pretty much all of them well work. It just depends on your $$$$$. If you want cheap get a s14 sr turbo. If you have the money to do it right good tuning, fuel system..... I would suggest a .86a/r GT2871R. It will spool quick and wont have a problem hitting 350whp when and if you ever want to go that high.

good choice on the Ka-T. A T28 will spool instantly with a KA. If your looking at Disco Potatos (GT28R), i wouldn't waste my time with that, and would just look at GT2871Rs 0.64. The 2871R makes some more power and costs about the same. Spool up time is near instant as well.
Best bang for the buck, S14 T28 hands down. Can't go wrong with a 300WHP turbo for $300. Although, i have noticed recently that they are selling for a little more than that due to them becoming more and more rare and more ppl realizing it is pretty much the same thing as S15 turbos.

Wow.. thx a lot for the input guys. I was wondering about the various .64 and so forth after the turbo names. Is this the outlet size? or inlet size. If so does high number = faster?

Case in point.
One option you probably haven't considered is a T28 from a Pulsar GTiR. They're journal bearing so they can be rebuilt (whereas S14 T28s cannot, at least not practically). They have a larger exhaust housing than the S14 T28s, so they'll flow better and make more power in the top end. They don't spool as quickly, but with your extra .4L of displacement that won't be a problem. I think it would be a better match for your engine; the KA already makes great low- and mid-range torque, so the GTiR T28 would help spread your powerband out and make more power up top. I think with an S14 T28 you might be choking out a little at higher revs.
They also can be found fairly cheap.
Check here for more info: http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=181241&highlight=gtir+t28 Not sure if he's still selling it, but you can at least look through the thread for information.

SHIFT *grind* is correct!
Gti-R T28 was a GREAT turbo on my KA. Rebuildable, way better top end than a S14 T28. I ran both and could feel a noticable difference between the two.
12psi on the Gti-R turbo and I acquired consistent 113 mph trap speeds in the 1/4 mile.

That's typically the size of the exhaust housing. The larger the number, the larger the exhaust housing. The larger the exhaust housing, the better the housing flows (and the more capacity the turbo has to make top end power) but also the more lag you'll have. The GTiR T28 has a 0.86 exhaust housing, fairly large for a T28, which is why it lags more than other T28s. However, with your higher displacement, lag would be reduced and it'd be a great match overall.

in another words, the 0.86 is slower than the 0.64. If you search around, people have made 400WHP on GT2871R 0.64 on STOCK SR ex. manifold. I have never personally driven a GT2871R powered car, but from what ppl say, the 0.64 spools almost as quick as GT28Rs.
