Okay soo i was buffing my subframe and realized how bad it sucked and how many cracks would be killer to get into
remembered a hot rod trick
Alll you need is water, baking soda, a battery charger, a rubber tub for whatever size part, and a stainless steel rod for your electrode
Pretty much all you do in short form is
-Fill tub with water
-Throw table spoon of baking soda per gallon i threw in an entire small box
-Toss the negative charge on the piece of metal that needs rust removal, positive charge on your electrode making sure it doesn't touch the other piece of metal
-Might need more chargers and rods for bigger objects i used 3 12 volt battery chargers
-Watch it work its magic
-Once its all done just power wash all the rust off easy ass thhat
heres some pics from start to finish

Shit thats a rusty ass beast

wow that waters clean

poopy ass water but it means its working

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/8913/rust5ae6.jpg
theres the line showing the difference between the stuff in and out of the water
its actually amazing you could just pick most of the rust off with your hand way more efficient to power wash though gets in all the cracks too.
Hope you enjoy i know i enjoyed not having to buff all that shit off

Very cool. I will definatly have to try this. What did you have the output on the charger set to (amps) do more or less amp affect the effectiveness of the rust removal? +1 for you.
**also, how long did you let it sit for before you pulled it out?

woo sweet.
Yea i wire-wheeled mine, shit was a ton of trouble and it didn't even work that well... this is a mucho betterer idear.
Mine came out like so after I slapped some POR-15 on it.

LOL
that's a sweet idea man. i'd love to try this on a few parts. First i'd actually hafta find some rust on my car though :boink:!!! Desert climate + 19 year old car = wtf?? where's the rust??

hahaa yeah doesn't look the greatest but its only under the car anyways
how did you take the subframe bushings out? I used a hand torch on mine and burnt them off took for fricken ever but i gottem out just wondering if there is a more effective way?

I actually tried one amp at first but for the size of the tub it was only doing the one area around the electrode
so i ended up throwing 3 electrodes in each charged by a different battery charger and it worked way quicker......only took about a full day to finish
and the its a 12V charger i think i have them set at 6Amps?

they actually make "anti rust" kits for cars that kinda use the same idea (just no water or baking soda) I just installed one on a camry about a week ago. The theory behind it is not to get present rust off..but to prevent rust from forming. we'll see how it works out..

Wow man thank you. I've never heard of this. Would have helped my friend but we took turns wire wheeling it.
But now tackling mine will be way more fun!

Would it be possible to just hook up the electrodes to a battery charger tha's plugged into a wall?
I know dick all when it comes to electricity and stuff... And oddly enoguh I'm a welder/fabricator... How does that work?

That's exactly what he did. Just a 12v battery charger. Negative on the metal piece, and positive on a metal rod that's submerged in the electrolyte/water solution

The easiest way is to get an oxy-acetylene torch, and just heat up the metal sleeve in the middle and bash it out with a hammer.
Then you put some light fluid on the bushing, and watch it burn for like 10 minutes while you get high off the fumes. (and bash it out with like a screw driver or something)
I remember when I did it, I only had a propane torch.. shit took me like 5h to get all four out.

12V won't electrocute anyone. Besides, it's not the voltage that gets you, it's the amperage.

i saw this method a while back and thought it was really interesting. +1 to you for actually trying it out.
i noticed that you said that when you only used one electrode it seems as though only the closest piece to the electrode was getting cleaned. it makes sense since the electricity is going to flow to the path of least resistance. here is the thread that i originally saw: http://www3.telus.net/public/aschoepp/electrolyticrust.html
and in his setup you can see that he basically has a circle of steel rods in his bucket creating a giant circle (positive rods) around the piece to be cleaned (ground). i think that this would probably disperse the electricity more evenly giving your part full coverage and a hell of a cleaning.
not trying to thread jack, just wanted to throw some ideas out there.

Good idea man. Yeah the battery is working perfectly now. I'll just recharge it as needed. Good thing I had a spare in the garage.
I thought about putting chicken wire all around the walls of the 5gallon bucket I'm using. Cleaning off q45 brakes has never been so easy hahah!

well mine does that too if the electrode touches the piece of metal it shorts out.... you cannot have the electrode touching the metal it must be sitting in the bucket close too but not touching your part.
didderson
03-30-2008, 05:11 PM
well they're not touching but like I said I'm using a 5gal bucket so I guess they're too close. Either way, I hooked my battery charger up to my battery, then ran jumpers to the calipers I'm cracking the rust off of.
works great!
