today i got fired

for reall.. after 3 years at this part time job workin for the local newspaper as a customer service rep.. in a call center answering phones to peoples complaints about thier paper delivery or billing etc.. Im basically the guy you talk to when you call to report you want to subscribe to a newspaper or you got a billing question/complaint about delivery etc.

I got fired cuz some cranky old people called to complain about my service.. This guy calls in, asks if i guaranty delivery to his porch, whenever someone asks that i say "i cant guaranty the carrier will do that because its a request, but i can guaranty the delivery". basically a newspaper carrier tosses papers from their car when they deliver, imagine if everyone called in to have their papers on their porch, that would mean the driver would have to get out of their car and walk up to everyone porch, times xxxxxx number of houses on their route.

Imagine if i did say i "guaranty" porch delivery and it doesnt happen, they would probably call back and say that "he said he guarantied it"... id probably get in trouble still

Just last week i was writen up because someone called back and reported that i "refused to transfer them to a supervisor".. shit, sometimes I would get someone on the phone requesting my supervisor, and there might not be a supervisor present at the time *like they could have left for the day, or just not at their desk at that momment*, its like what im I suppose to do? so i tell people i dont have anyone availible at that time.. and eventually these people call back and tell on me saying i refused to transfer them.

Guess after 3 years and new managment, they rather side with bitchy old people over their employee of 3 years.
Well the newspaper industry is sucking right now, people dont subscribe much anymore, its all elderly old people who subscribe, pretty sure we woulda got laid off soon anyways.

Im kind of relieved, now i get my weekends back and tons of time. I might go back to school or look for a full time with benefits somewhere.. i needa pay off my credit card. that job was stressful and really sucked for part timers because they work just as hard as full timers, *full timers dont work on weekends or holidays*, and dont get the benefits or pay like the fuller times*

What i would like to ask to my fellow zilvians, is when you get terminated, and you apply for jobs, what do you say when they ask you about your previous job? like reason for leaving, etc.
Obiously if i go on a interview, and they ask why i left my prior job, and if i say i got terminated because i didnt make people happy, that probably wont be good in my favor.

I know to be "laid off" means that you where cut for financial reasons, i know this company has laid off people before and this company isnt doing too good anymore.. since i been there for a while, my pay was higher then what they would pay a new starter, so maybe I could say i was laid off to be replaced by someone who would work for less.

From my understanding, when someone contacts a prior employer , that its against the law for them to provide or ask any other questions besides to verify employment.

i second that. i slaved and got injured for my previous employer, then went into Safety, now layed off. so im in the unemployment bucket too. dont sweat it bro, take a fuckin vacation :) you deserve it after 3 years of dealin with their shit. and if you dont have insurance through your parents or anything and you had insurance through your employer, make sure to look into continuing your coverage through COBRA. :D

ugh..i used to work for tech support before I got fired for pissing off a customer too. bottom line is that customer service jobs really arn't worth it, if there isn't tips and/or commission involved. Too much confrontation, drama, and really not that great pay, imo. Doesn't really help if you're dealing with older ppl either. Its in a way, a blessing in disguise for you to get out of there than to stay for several yrs longer.

Now you may say it sucks that you cannot use this company as a reference to apply for another job, but then again would you want another job in customer service anyhow? Might not be such a bad idea to start fresh in something entirely different. You may want to consider a different field entirely, and go back to study if needed be.

Normally I would discourage you seeking unemployment if you felt you were clearly in the wrong, but for them to do that to you after 3 yrs of service isn't exactly courteous either. If they had issues with you beside this isolated matter, they as your employers should have been responsible to bring this to your attention earlier, for their own sake if not for yours. Then again, lack of communication is always the rule, rather than the exception.

You could say that you were looking for "more career growth" or "decided to change career paths"

Typically most places won't actually call previous employers, unless at the stage where they are interested in you

But if you are just applying, they aren't going to take time to call references and such, so I wouldn't be too concerned

If you want to address the issue of being laid off, you could say that you were "downsized" rather than laid off, and maybe point the finger more at a financial reason for them cutting employees. You could mention (if you even get into this much detail) that a group of employees were all cut with you (rather than singling you out)

That "I was replaced by someone who would work for less" isn't really a good one, that doesn't make sense or sound good for that matter

One word of advice is to NEVER EVER EVER bad mouth any previous employer under any circumstance during an interview...I don't care if your old boss punched you in the face or robbed your house, never say anything negative about previous employers (big no no)

If say your old boss was a jerk, instead of saying "oh I quit because he was a slob and a fat jerk," say something (like above) such as "I was seeking more career growth and potential" or "I am looking to work for a larger sized company" etc.

And just be yourself to some extent, since its a two way interview, since you gotta like working for the company as much as the company needs to want to hire you

When you "crash" in your job this "insurance" helps you out. To the OP,

Be upfront with your new employers, they are more willing to work with you and understand why you got fired. But do pick your words very carefully.

They will be using your references when the next employer interviews you and considers you as a final candidate.

Just make sure your reference at the Newspaper is somebody you know, and somebody who will stick up for you. It does not necessarily have to be your Real Boss. It could very well be a manager in another department. Make very sure you let the person who you've selected as a refernce is aware of it. Otherwise they will be surprised. I myself have been subjected to as a reference and when I wasnt told ahead of time I bashed them.

Nobody likes surprises especially phone interviews ie, references

To the OP...If they do ask just say you left due to personal differences, chances are your new employer will not look too far in depth into your past. The majority of jobs dont even follow up on checking references or calling past employers.....according to my Human Resource Management professor past employers usually try to avoid saying anything negative about past employees because it could be considered slander...so they will most likely only confirm that you worked there....and if the current employer asks if you were fired (which they probably wont) then your previous job will only confirm that, and not go into why...just to cover their asses.

What exitspeed is saying is totally true. In fact, if I remember correctly, if an employer you're interviewing for talks to a reference from the job you were fired from or quit from, it's supposedly illegal (I say supposedly because I've never looked it up myself to be sure, and it may differ between states) for them to say anything negative that could affect you getting the new job. So if they don't have something good to say or make something up that sounds nice, they'll probably just say "no comment" at the worst. But they can't say that they fired you because they don't like you and think you're a miserable human being or go into any detail about why you were fired.

Anyway, take that with a grain of salt, the point is that you aren't fucked for life by getting fired. Just stay with it, and it might be a blessing in disguise.

It's one thing to need unemployment. I'm still biased against the programs, but I imagine there are legitimate times/reasons when hard-working citizens need it (like Mel). Bragging about not needing the money, and how good it makes you feel to take it, is grounds for violent re-education in my opinion.

What really makes me sad is that I never thought I would feel this way about another Zilvian, much less an established premie. It sucks.
