View Full Version : Vacuum Leak?
I think I may have a vacuum leak, but am having trouble locating it. When I start my car everything is normal. As soon as I give it any throttle it begins to make a high pitch whine at idle. The noise goes away with any throttle, and returns as soon as I let off which leads me to believe it's a vacuum leak. The noise is coming from the intake side of the motor, but I'm having trouble pin pointing it. I checked the vacuum line that goes to my bov and the one for the boost gauge. Casey heard it as well this afternoon and thought it was coming from around the intake manifold.
I've had the SR for about a year and a half with no problems. It's a stock red top SR. It just started doing this last night. Any ideas?
Happy Easter!

Are you noticing a boost leak/ power failure aswell?
Try checking the vacuum lines tucked under the intake manifold.
I noticed vacuum increased from about 18hg at idle to about 16. Boost is still normal though and there is no power loss. I'll check those lines under the intake manifold.

i had a vaccum leak on my car not too long ago, i found it directly under the throttle assembly, a small crack around the outer rim of the hose and it made kinda a "whiney" sound too.. maybe the same thing?? hope you fix it..

You can spray some carb cleaner or air intake cleaner around the intake manifold with the car running at idle. When you spray the hose that is leaking it will affect the idle. At least that will help you find the right area to look before you spend all day digging around.

Yup, go at it with some carb or brake cleaner and see if you can track it down. There are a multitude of places it can leak on the intake side of the engine. One other option would be to do a boost leak test(pressurize the system) and see if you can pinpoint it that way.
Alright, I'll go at it in the morning. Thanks for all the help!

Ive got a boost leak tester, give me a call if you want.
I just fixed all my boost leaks last weekend!
Awesome! So how's it running now?
When are you planning to come to Athens again? And can I buy your old lip? haha, so many questions..

make your own pressure tester from home depot. takes 15 minutes to make, if that. Once its made, take out your intake, put in the pressure tester, pump your system up of air.. and wait for the leaks to show up. I bought a 2" ID elbow, screwed on a cap, drilled a hole for a valve stem, put in the valve stem, and voila!
