View Full Version : Engine Hoist - Best place to attach?

So I've pulled a couple motors and I've always used a really long length of chain and hooked it to the motor mounts through the intake and exhaust mani to hoist it. Seemed to be the most logical spot to lift the engine.

My question is, is there a better way?

I prefer to pull the engine and trans together, so I don't want to damage something by only attaching the chains to the head or manifold studs. Is there any specific bolts I could attach to or something? On V8's and stuff you can pick them up by the top of the intake manifold. They even make a plate to do so. I just felt like the weight of the motor and trans might warp the head or stretch the head bolts or something.

Some advice would be appreciated.

I usually use a bolt into the head back by the stock catch can, and the around the front of the intake mani.

I'm sure it's not the best, but I haven't messed anything up yet.

Rolla's have hooks bolted on to the motors, thats neat. my roomies turbo volvo does too.

I usually loop it around the 2nd runner of both the intake mani. and the 2nd runner of the exhaust mani. Gives it a good angle to remove both the engine and the tranny, plus you don't have to worry about stripping out aluminum threads in the head anymore.

I always wrap a strap around the runners of the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold if it is cast. If you got a stainless exhaust mani, wrap it around the motor mount bracket.

Always have ran chains or straps through the intake and exhaust manifold before. But now I have managed to bolt on two hoist hooks like those on Mazdas on my head and works nicely, three times pulled and hasn't failed me yet.

Got any pics of your hoist hooks? I like pulling motors, so that'd be a cool thing to have. LOL.

Around 2-3 runners on intake manifold side.

Link around the PS bracket on the exhaust side.

Done. I've done this 1xxx,xxx,xxx times.
Never a problem.

I'll get back to you on that tomorrow afternoon. I don't have my camera battery charger, left it at the girlfriends dorm. Springbreak tomorrow!
