i saw a restaurant once called "thai me up"
that sounded pretty romantic.
cheesecake factory is cool, but it's like a 2 hour wait sometimes and always stupid crowded. at least there are like 8 floors of macy's to wander around in while you're waiting though. that's just women's and furninure. macy's mens is in a different building :-/
cliff house is cool too, and it's right above ocean beach
also lots of little italian places in north beach

"Thai me up" was formerly known as "Video Cafe." It's a 24 hour restaurant on 21st and Geary.
Cliffhouse is cool, although I haven't been since they remodeled. Down the hill is Beach Chalet, which is a microbrewery. It's a little pricey. http://www.beachchalet.com/
As far as drinks, Top of the Mark (Mark Hopkins Hotel) - great views, reasonably priced drinks. I think they have live jazz on certain nights. http://www.topofthemark.com/
Starlight Room (Sir Francis Drake Hotel) - also a great view. Dancing to a dj and young golddiggers on old mens' arms. http://www.harrydenton.com/
Cigarbar off Broadway. You can smoke inside if that's your thing. Live Latin Jazz on certain nights. http://www.cigarbarandgrill.com/
Slanted Door - Vietnamese fusion. It's in the Ferry Building. A little pricey, though. http://www.slanteddoor.com/
Boulevard is pretty good as well, but also pricey. http://www.boulevardrestaurant.com/
Just go to North Beach. You can wander around and find a restaurant - they're all pretty good. There are tons of bars, too.
Pier 39 is cool, but a tourist trap. Everything is expensive there. It's very popular nonetheless. The wharf is the same way. BUT the wharf does have the only In and Out in SF City Limits.
If you want out of the way places, The Haight is cool. Lots of various restaurants and a huge variety of shops. Just beware of dirty gutter bums. Clement St. is good for Chinese food and shopping. It's best to go in the am.
Parking sucks everywhere, so be prepared. Or cab it, which adds up quickly.

Yes, they did. It's not that bad. It IS open 24 hours, so it ain't gourmet. It has all these movie posters from the 80's. They have breakfast 24 hrs. a day and also serve Thai. Weird combo, but it's great if you're blacked out and hungry.
The other 24 hr. restaurant beside's Denny's in J-Town is Lucky Penny.
Oh yeah - Japantown is pretty cool too. Check that out.

At 4am, it's the only game in town besides jack in the crack. And they do have a special j-town menu.

The loin ain't that bad. I love the bars down there like Hemlock and Edinburgh Castle (there are TONS of Irish bars, yet only one SCOTTISH bar). The loin is just scummy and full of drug sellers/consumers. As long as you don't walk around wearing a fanny pack and sandals with socks while asking for directions, people don't bug you. The one thing the cops will bust people for is messing with tourists.
There are also a bunch of tranny hookers. I always love seeing some dude walking with one into an residential hotel when he doesn't realize that a surprise awaits him.
Like Dave Chapelle said, "ain't nothin' tender" about the tenderloin.

El farolito on mission/anondaga is 24-hours. Seriously, try it out. One of the best taquerias in SF. Super carne asada burrito for $6. as big as your forearm and hella good too.

what about mel's on mission? isn't that 24 hour? i've been there at like 3am i'm sure

There's an El Faro literally around the corner from my school on 1st and mission. I'll hit that up after spring break. I think there's also one on El Camino in South City...if El Faro and Farolito are the same. They both have the lighthouse logo. I do like El Faro, but I still prefer Pancho Villa or La Taqueria IF I'm in the Mission. Pancho Villa before or after Delirium was great. If I'm in SSF, I hit up El Faro.
I'm from the avenues, so I'm loyal to Gordo's. The one on Clement made me my first burrito ever in 1984. I still remember it.
Shit, after all this burrito talk, I'm going to have to get one!
what about mel's on mission? isn't that 24 hour? i've been there at like 3am i'm sure

I forgot about Mel's at the Metreon. It is 24 hours. I always forget about that one because it's the furthest from me. I am westside-biased because I tend to be heading home after 2am. I'm getting old.
I think King of Thai on Clement might be open late. It's been a while since I was out late night on Clement.
Back on topic:
Emmy's Spaghetti Shack in the Mission (and Virginia St.). I think they serve 40's. The food is good, pretty cheap (8 or 9 bucks). BUT the place is tiny and they only take cash. While you wait for a table you can hang out in the Mexican bar next door (everyone wears cowboy hats, drinks Tecate and Tejano is blasting). You'll be the only English speaker in there.
They also have an autographed picture of Paul from the Diamond Center on the wall!
El Rio is nearby. A pretty cool place. They have salsa on Sundays. It's a real mix of people. Heated outdoor patio where you can smoke. I like it. http://www.elriosf.com/

Sorry, El faro and El Farolito-VERY different. thats like ss-autochrome and HKS different. I think El Farolito is better than pancho villa too. Never tried la taqueria.
What sucks is I stay in the eastbay now and all this burrito talk is getting me very hungry! I have'nt found anything comparable out here so I haven't had any really good mexican food.
PhilthyS13
03-19-2008, 05:23 PM
I wouldn't know the difference because I haven't had either/or in a decade.
La Taqueria is a block away, at 23rd or 24th. I don't really go that far down Mission any more. Haven't been lately, but used to go to Doc's and (ugh) Medjool. I go to Foreign Cinema every once in a while. But other than that, I don't go down there. http://www.foreigncinema.com/
Burrito places are like dim sum places. Everyone has their favorite. That's how 20 manage to stay in business in a 4 block area.
Coke or Pepsi...I like RC. I like getting Pancho Villa's mojado burrito and I like their horchata. I'm all about the sauce. Plus, PV is on 16th, close to places I go. Finding one place to park > finding two.

King of Thai is decent, there is a place on Geary near Polk I believe that is awesome, but I forgot the name of it. If you are taking the 38 toward J-town it will be on your right side, it has a cool atmosphere. There is also Be My Guest, I believe that's the name, on Clement near the bank of America I think, which was pretty good, awesome spa water.
There is a pretty trendy sushi place on 11th and Folsom that opens around 6pm called Sushi Groove, the food is alright but the environment is cool, they have their own DJ and there are candles everywhere, problem is it is very easy to miss the place, it is a black building and the sign is only like 12" long. There are also places on Fillmore with decent sushi, along with J-town but none of them were spectacular to me, but cool to visit. Though I heard of a awesome place to go in Inner Sunset called Sozai that is supposed to be really good, unfortunately I never went.
If you are near downtown, which I'm sure you will be, go to Samovar Tea Lounge, it's on Mission between 3rd and 4th, it is one of my favorite places in the city, Yerba Buena gardens are beautiful at night, I used to go there all the time when I live in SF. Also forget Mel's near the Metreon, that place always gets me sick, for diner style experience check on Lori's Diner on Powell.
As for the Tenderloin, it isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, I never had a problem, only thing I ever heard of was my friend got robbed after he was hit by a car. There are some awesome places to eat in the Tenderloin, not the places themselves but the food is killer, unfortunately I never cared much to remember the places names.

DUDE, OKAY HOLD THE PRESSES.
If youre going to to SF, you gotta check out House of Nanking. Its one of the best chinese places in cali, hands down, rated BOMB by multiple noted eatery magazines. Dont judge by the looks and location though, nothing royal or majestic about this place, but its close to union square (no ghetto for you-o). people line up outside for a seat in this place. trust me, if you like chinese food, you'll love this place.
