yessss. the old Packard Motor Company plant. built in the early 1900's. ive posted pics of this place before. but i went back on sunday for some time killing. took a few shots. played with a can of spray paint...man that shit is not easy.
but yeah, they built cars here way back when. from start to finish, in this plant. 3.5 million square feet, extending several blocks.
in no particular order.
1. from one of the many many rooftops. probably 5-6 stories off the ground. in the distance, the 3 buildings in the middle. that would be GM's world headquarters. the 'ren cen'.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2393/2334351946_2bf53857de_b.jpg
2. they used it as storage after they closed down. lots of stuff still in there. trucks, cars, RV's, boats, etc. notice the paw prints in the snow?? stray dogs walking around. tracks were everywhere. even on the roof, inches from the edge.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3100/2334351930_3d932d523f_b.jpg
^^ this is also part of the old 'splatball city'. where they hosted paintball games. ground is covered in sawdust.
3. tacky shot of old chair. so cliche.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2242/2334351922_9317c806e4_b.jpg
^^ i think this was where the cafeteria was. there were old lids for frozen food and shit all over the groun.
4. there were a bunch of random rooms filled with furniture. i guess the guys that paint the place up hang out or something. maybe homeless dudes sleep there, or have slept there. dont know. all those magazines were food and cooking mags.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2291/2332422174_8deaa390df_b.jpg
bonapatite (sp) magazine.
5. this shot sucks. straight up. but this was a smaller, more empty part of splatball city. in other rooms they had ALOT more stuff to hide behind. tirewalls, old wire spools, pallets, boats, etc.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2138/2332422160_c9c9d71999_b.jpg
^^ real life COD4.
6. 2nd floor. all covered in ice. alot of the place was iced up pretty good. up to probably 3" thick in spots. there were dirt particles and all sorts of nasty shit in the ice, so it wasnt slippery at all.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3020/2332422148_df4dc14301_b.jpg
7. another shot from the roof. that watertower in the distance is 2 blocks away, atleast.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2081/2331490795_dae39f6a7f_b.jpg
8. needs no explanation. how could i not? :keke:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3177/2331490785_890b6d96cf_b.jpg
9. a forklift. plasma cutter?? they ganked a big chunk off that thing. if you look closely, they even cut through the hydraulic pistons. scrapped it, made a few bucks. i cant imagine carrying that thing out of there...
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2041/2331490781_0bfb7925e7_b.jpg
^^ if you look even more closely, that is a piano on its side on the very left of the photo.
10. a serious drop-ceiling. those wires are holding up the ceiling 2 floors below me. i was stading on some little bridge.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3263/2331490773_c69c82e51d_b.jpg
i did something wrong with this shot. think i needed to crank up the white's. oh wells.
11. my tripod was inches from the edge. that rooftop was effing scary. every footstep, the tar would sink a couple inches. typically i need beer to get this high in the air/close to the edge.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3148/2330655674_91b59e808e_b.jpg
^^ my dumbass was so skeered, i forgot to put my polarizer on. newb mistake..
12. 10mm makes hallways longer than they really are. rofl. this was the office area. kinda creepy.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2268/2330655664_a0e500c41e_b.jpg
thats all. i might be heading out again this sunday. possibly a diff location. i just want to get more shots.
and because someone always asks. canon rebel XTi, sigma 10-20mm F/4-5.6.
thanks for looking.

dude, you wandered kinda far off the highway. good 'ole mt. elliot. a block east over from the building is NOT a neighborhood i want to be in. but the liquor store at the corner on mt elliot is effing amazing. 3" bulletproof glass. bulletproof lazy susan's at the counters so you can pay for shit. the best part? there is a fucking subway under glass, and in the middle is a small area that sells what appear to be home made gangster DVD's and rap cd's of dudes right off the streets. serious shit. but thats where we stock up on OE 800 in the warmer months. :bigok:

the area's around the GM building are really nice. dowtown detroit is great, IMO. lots to do, lots to see. when i was new to the area, 6 years ago, i thought it was a dumpy shit hole. but ive since found the precious jewels in the city. the people are amazingly friendly, and that makes for a good overall experience. but like any other place, its got its bad eggs. the economy here is so shitty, i think these places will be around for quite some time. which doesnt bother me, as they are a history lesson everytime i enter these buildings. infact, im going back to the same place tomorrow. like i said earlier, 3.5 MILLION square feet. theres alot to see, and photograph. i got a new lens this week from a fellow zilvian. so im going to give that a try. should be fun.
but others have said that they wish they had this shit in their town. as cool as it looks, you dont want it around you... it breeds nothing good. the only value i see is artistic. both with spray paint, and photo documentation. thats about it. besides that, its a giant eyesore...... detroit isnt doing well. the mayor isnt helping any... i wonder how many others have heard about its 'great' mayor kwame kilpatrick.....

No shit...job hazard of urban exploration, I guess.
I know a person that used to go to all sorts of abandoned warehouse and factories just for shits and giggles. He told me that one time he stumbled into an abandoned warehouse filled with toxic waste barrels. :ugh:

lol, thanks guys. i never go anywhere by myself. and im the guy that chickens out the most. unless ifcourse ive got a 40 of OE in my hand. :bigok: i made giant strides last fall. but took a step backwards on sunday. i was afraid of everything. im severely afraid of heights. like, big time. ill have to start boozing more. not that ill be safer, but ill feel safer. haha.
i still try to tone down my HDR's quite a bit. any suggestions from anyone? i think some are still a bit overpowering. i aim for the more realistic look, as opposed to the fake looking HDR's like my buddy does. heres a few of his pics.
yes, these are NOT my shots. but my good buddies. hes a good year ahead of me. but we have the exact same equipment. he just has some more know how.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3050/2340175242_21e2beba6b_b.jpg

my shot:

GREAT photos! Your friends style is very good, but your pictures are very raw and clean. The lighting is great, ill have to check out lightroom, sounds like a good program.

it depends on the weather. he usually does 5. but sometimes 9. im not sure how he avoids noise like he does. i think he uses noise ninja or something. im still a newb, so i have issues with noise alot.

Awesome thread Lucky7. I think HDR is awesome, but there is a time and place for it. With the Packard plant, your buddies HDRs almost looked like cumputer renderings....sort of takes away from the crispness of a real picture. With cars though, it's an entirely different ballgame.

A while back on clubrsx, a couple of guys did the same thing as lucky7 and went to the packard plant to explore and take pictures. And what did they find you ask?
They found themselves in the midst of a gay porn flick. All the "actors" were wearing superhero costumes. Yeah, that's detroit.
Here is the guys original post on crsx:
"So, yesterday me and my friend Dane and I decided to head down to the old Packard car plant in down town Detroit for some nice shots of the decay. We get there and start to take some pixorz and everything is just fine for about 30 min. Then we hear a noise above us we look up and see what appears to be a band and their photographer taking pictures for some album art. They were all in combat boots and one had leather vest with no shirt on. Dane was like did you see the gay cowboy, and at that time I just passed it off and was like yeah what ever. Boy was I wrong. We continue taking pictures and move up a floor when all of the sudden Dane calls me over. I look at what he is looking at.
I'm like WTF the same people that were taking pictures earlier were dressed up like super heroes and taking pictures. I'm thinking this shit is getting weird but I guess if you want to costume-play super heroes on the top of the old Packard plant who am I to stop you. I continue taking pictures and move up to the roof. I look down and see something that I wish I had never saw. Spider Man on his knees about to blow Venom!
It only got worse from there"

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3020/2332422148_df4dc14301_b.jpgThat portion is no longer accessible as its on the 3rd floor with no ramp or working elevator there are portions with ramps but getting a lowered car in there would be way more work than its worth. There are a ton of holes and debris on the ramp.
