Well the season starts this weekend - technically today since practice is being held early Friday local Australian time. Speed is televising the race ~8pm Pacific so for those of you that care, mark you calendars.
New rules, new drivers, new courses and new team. No more US grand prix though. It's too soon to tell but it seems like Ferrari and McLaren are picking up from where they left off in 2007.

Lot of sliding going around and judging by all the talk it seems that the track is hard on brakes. There'll be some attrition :boink: :Owned:

The issue of smaller/poorer teams using updated 07 spec cars came up last night on the televised practice season. They actually argued that it may be of a benefit to said teams to run a proven design while the big hitters are still sorting out their new packages; grab all the points they can early on.

Qualifying was great (well not that great for a Ferrari fan like myself) will all the slides, off tracks and random failures. Feel bad for Webber having his rear brakes fail on his home race. And Kubica, man, what an awesome pole bid; if it hadn't been for that forray into the green he could have become the first Pole on pole in F1 history.

Austin stop hating. :D Kimi did some awesome driving, considering the problems the Ferrari was giving him.
Sebastian Vettel and Sebastian Bourdais did some awesome driving as well. Kovalinen( and drove great I might add) actually did overtake him (Fernando) he just took it right back.
I was actually impressed mister crybaby(Fernando) drove like a Champion.

Well its the first race and as usual the field is all mixed up. I expect Ferrari to come back strong if their engines stop blowing up (0/6 finishes for Ferrari engines is just embarrasing). I am mighty surprised by the Williams and the BMW's. I can only pray for a good season :)

Hamilton won as expected.

Raikkonen had everything go wrong for him and it started with qualifying. TC had NOTHING to do with his problem.

According to Kovalainen he hit the pit lane speed button while on the main straight while ripping off a visor strip. Thats why he slowed down and Alonso passed.

Barrichello is disqualified for running that red light in the pit lane. So Raikkonen goes up to 8th and picks up a point.

Nakajima gets a -10 position grid penalty for the next race for crashing into Kubica.

Kubica was pulled out of the race for pitting during a safety car on course.

That's all I can remember so far.

But the race sure did mix up what might happen this season.

What a way to open the `08 GP.

Can't wait till the Malaysia GP.

Actually...Kimi had some pretty bad luck with his days at McLaren. Came really close on a couple of occasions to winning the championship...had it not been for the crappy luck he had....this last championship could have been his third or forth title.

I'm a bit disappointed about Ferrari's poor showing but at the same time excited since it seems like a more par playing field. BMW, Red Bull, Toyota and to a degree Honda have made progress towards challenging Ferrari and McLaren's domination in the recent years.
I think all the changes from last year are doing what they were supposed to: close the gap between teams, give more control to the drivers and make the races more fun to watch for the fans.

Taniguchi_Is_#1

felipe massa looks to have returned to his old sauber self. the toyotas look fast, but i don't think they have the drivers to challenge for best of the rest this year. i think signing timo glock was a bad idea. i think if the rumored move of takuma sato to toyota had happened, they might be able to get more results. (sato has proved himself to be fast, but wild. if he doesn't demolish his car first, he usually goes well) oh well.

i don't want hamilton to win the championship. i feel like i don't like him because everyone else does. haha. once kovalainen can get acclimated to the team, and if ferrari ever figure out their reliability issues, then it'll be a good championship this year. BMW is really showing some speed in malaysia, so you never know if heidfeld might pull one out. not kubica, though. it doesn't seem like he's able to crest the hill of superstar right now.

edit: ferraris on front row (massa on pole), followed by the 2 mclarens (kovalainen then alonso), and then trulli in the toyota and kubica in the bmw. is it just me, or is the toyota fast this year? it's too bad that their drivers suck.

here we go..

Both McLaren drivers will be moved five places down the grid for blocking other drivers in Saturday's qualifying session. Both Hamilton and Kovalainen were investigated by the stewards after qualifying after receiving complaints from Heidfeld and Alonso.

As Hamilton and Kovalainen finished their qualifying run they were driving slowly back to the pits. In the meantime other drivers such as Nick Heidfeld and Fernando Alonso were still on their flying laps. The McLaren drivers were punished for not moving aside.

Kovalainen and Hamilton will not start from P8 and P9 respectively.

Yeah, Bourdais went off all by himself, Rosberg collected Glock and broke his rear suspension.

it wasn't dull, it was a clean race. last week was ridiculous, so compared to that it was dull.

Kimi drove amazingly - Massa is proving everyone right that he can't drive without traction control.

Lewis drove well - started off at P9 and if his mechanics wouldn't have fucked up he would have taken 4th, possibly even caught Kovalainen. I mean he made up almost 5.7 seconds in 9 laps - thats ridiculous. Its cool to see Toyota doing well, but Trulli is NOT a better driver than Hamilton, he did however put together a better race.

McLaren FTW! Alonso is a douche and I'm glad he left. They are going to dominate the constructors and take 1 - 2 overall.

Actually I was glad to see Mclaren get docked 5 spaces on the starting grid for the slow down in qualifying yesterday. It gave other people a chance to show they can drive. Heidfield drove quite well as so did Weber. It was also cool to see the BMW/Saubers running well. Saying Trulli is not a better driver than Hamilton is true and obvious but Trulli does have more experience and however brilliant Hamilton is its not like he does not make his own mistakes. Given that your statement would have been better if you said Trulli is not a faster driver. Though the bigger question to ask is, how would Hamilton do if he was not in the Mclaren? You see when Michael Schmuchar started he was not in one of the fastest cars and teams on the track. Don't get me wrong Hamilton is a great but I feel it would be cooler to see him driving a slower chassis and having to come up through the ranks.

Oh ya and I for one feel that Ferrari could nab the contstructors championship and would have no problem with it. Mclaren has proven themselves less than honorable.

Oh and never discount the Iceman or Massa. Lots of drivers are having problems driving without traction control even your beloved Hamilton. Go back and watch the race again. Unless your just blinded by undying love.
Plus I just have a special place in my heart for Ferrari so screw Mclaren. LOL hahahhahhaha

Ferrari could very well win the constructors - I was just rooting for my team considering they are doing well so far.

"It gave other people a chance to show they can drive"

But at times those drivers held other drivers up, Mark Weber is notorious for doing that - which to give him credit, hes very good at blocking. Thats the way racing goes though. If you want to talk about what if's, I'd like to see that race over again, with Hamilton or even Kovalainen starting 3rd and seeing if they could have kept up with the Ferrari's ridiculous pace.

I'm by no means a Ferrari hater - I just don't like Massa very much - I'm still a Kimi fan even though he left McLaren.

I know you are older and probably have been watching F1 since I was a baby - I'm just stating my opinions/rooting for my team.

Yes but see your arguement about other drivers holding up people does not work in this area. Both Kovelinan and Hamilton held up drivers in qualifying by not pulling out of the racing line before slowing after setting their times. This is a qualifying rule that Weber did not violate so your analogy about Weber blocking has no bearing in this situation.

THere are a few new rookies this year, that well, got picked up by some of the not so wealthy teams... agreed alot of Hamiltons success is possibly because he got his debut with mclaren, he got a great car/team.

Webber wasn't blocking him or anything of the sort, Hamilton didn't get anything like close enough to try and pass. There's a guy on the UK sxoc forums who works for McLaren, apparently those disc wheel things have been causing a stupid amount of hassle all through winter testing, really tricky to get right when you're under pressure.

Mclaren has proven themselves less than honorable.

I think Ferrari still hold the all-time crown on that one though, they're pretty cosy way up there in Max Moseley's rectum :D

I watched the race Mr Clueless. The original point I made, which you called out, was the fact that Mclaren got docked 5 spaces in the starting grid. That did not happen because of anything in the race. It happened because of what Kovelinan and Hamilton did in qualifying.

As far as the race goes neither Hamitlon or Kovelinan or Weber did anything wrong. Now how you manage to construe the starting grid lineup with something that happened in the race is beyond me. In fact it defies logic.

Now if you can't read posts properly or do not watch qualifying do not comment on a fact, that you do not know the reason for.
Qualifying affects the starting grid, oh but wait you do not even stop to think about that do you?

When you said that it gave other people a chance to show they can drive - I assume you meant during the race - not qualifying. Heidfeld and Weber did drive well, I'm not denying that. I didn't say they did anything wrong, I just think Hamilton (and Heidfeld too) at that point (around 10-12 laps into the race) maybe could have had better times if they weren't behind Weber.

What I was trying to say was that I would have liked to see Hamilton/Kovalainen start 3rd/4th - yes I know they got docked 5 places, I watched the qualifying. It sucks, but they obviously screwed up and admitted it.

Very true...look at the example that Alonzo is putting forth this season. The guy can drive and win the championship as long as the car is up to par with his ability. Thats what he did a couple years back with Renault and almost proved it again with McLaren last year. This year his car is not as strong and as a result...he's not even close to podium. More and more they are starting to put back the HUMAN element into the equation. This year they took away traction control....next year they are proposing a 50% REDUCTION IN DOWNFORCE that will give the drivers even more to think about. (Mechanical Grip vs. Aerodynamic Grip) I think it will give a better chance for us spectators to differentiate a great driver from a good driver.

I too would like to see BMW Sauber come up in the ranks as well.

No I know what I read. I am not being a douchebag. Your post came directly after mine . I pointed out in that post that, I was happy to see the setback 5 spaces, of the Mclaren team. Not only for the what they did in qualifying but to liven up the competition. Now your post after that specifically addressed drivers holding people up and then tried to single out Weber as a example someone I had applauded in my post for his driving. Now given that your post came off like a debate of my previous post the response was to me warranted. Excuse me, if you did not mean what you wrote or what your post seemed to construe. I apologize if that was not your intention yet your post did read the way I read it.

i couldnt sleep cuz i took a nap earlier in the day so i stayed up lol.. i was rooting for kubica.

he is showing the commitment that he seriously wants to win, esp since he worked hard to loose extra weight. He has potential and BMW sauber seems pretty strong.

BMW is leading the constructor's championship, which is impressive enough.

Kubica could have done better off the start instead of losing the lead right away. Still a good job though.

What the hell was Hamilton doing? Facts shows the Alonso was full throttle out of the turn and Lewis should have been able to avoid him. I'm not even going to talk about his start, that is a rookie mistake, which he is no longer.

I'm not even going to talk about his start, that is a rookie mistake, which he is no longer.

Apparently he was in the wrong map:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/formula_1/article3694945.ece
In Malaysia, Hamilton was penalised in qualifying and delayed by a tyre-change snarl-up in the pits. This weekend he looked rattled in the car and strangely subdued out of it. On Friday he had a crash in practice and, having qualified in third place in a rebuilt chassis, faltered again when he selected the wrong engine setting and his car went into “anti-stall” as he sat on the grid.

It seems teams are playing with their maps for their starts to simulate launch control since they no longer have traction control.

How teams dodge traction control ban
Posted By Keith Collantine On March 27, 2008 @ 7:18 am
http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2008/03/27/how-teams-are-dodging-the-traction-control-ban/

The FIA are failing to make teams stick to the traction control ban according to ITV’s Ted Kravitz (http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?id=42139).

The teams have been using special engine setting maps at the start of the races to simulate launch control and get their cars off the line as quickly as possible - and efforts to stop the practice have failed.

To prevent teams doing this the FIA introduced a new rule that said there must be a 90 second delay between a driver changing the engine map and the new setting be applied to the engine by the software. It was hoped that the teams would not want the cars running with their ‘launch control’ settings for the whole of the first lap and so wouldn’t be able to use them.

However according to Kravitz the teams are still using the ‘launch control’ maps anyway because the start of the race offers such a good opportunity to move up through the field.

If I were trying to get around the ban I’d switch from the ‘launch control’ setting to race mode about 60 seconds before the start - I suspect most if not all the teams are doing this. Kravitz suggested this was why we’ve seen so many crashes at the start of races this year, and it might explain Felipe Massa’s unusual spin at the start of the Australian Grand Prix.

Keep an eye on those radio broadcasts and in-car shots at the start of the next race to see if anyone’s fiddling with their engine maps at the end of the formation lap.

Good race for Kubica and BMW leading in constructor's points.

hopefully Kovalainen will be ok, just soo sudden, no way to avoid those mechanical failures, they are guessing it was the rim. Reminds me of the Senna accident.

Could be the end for Super Aguri.. that sucks. Their drivers have been pretty good as far as not making the mistakes like others. THey just cant produce any podium standings. I cant imagine that they are not even breaking even on budget.

Vettel has been screwing up.

missed the incident in the pits between Kimi and Lewis

damm i havent been online in a while, but race was amazing.. sucks for lewis im a big fan... he was probably more worried about loosing position so he tried to get out as fast as possible without thinking/expecting the stopped cars ahead.

Great race for Kubica and a first for BMW.. damm im surprised.. He could be world champion if he keeps it up!! I was kinda happy to see coultard get 3rd too, wouldnt mind seeing him do better.

Anyone else hate Fox broadcasting the races?? They cut soo much shit out... no prerace interviews or analysis... and they cut the post race interviews *not that i watch em, but im starting to record the races and want it all*.

awesome race today!. Hamilton did good, almost too good i felt like it was staged lol.. Great job for Piquet jr. He finished 2nd , mostly because he only did 1 pit and keep a consistent race.

Hamilton didnt pit under the safety car period, and took a major chance since knowing he would eventually ahve to pit while he was ahead which would give up his spots.. but he did it, and managed to fight back to 1st place .. shit was crazy awesome. I think his best driving this far.

Its a trip though how he keeps pulling a few seconds ahead of everybody at each race. The Mclaren is just that good of a car/setup over everyone else.

I did stay up to watch it, but i didnt remember seeing that part i was probably too sleepy to pay attention so i just saw the highlights on f1 debrief right now.. damm

Cant believe the officials penalized hamilton for the track cut when Kimi eventually went into the wall anyways later on..

yeah, definitely one of the best recent races
plenty of passing, drama, crashes and controversy
although I'm a Ferrari fan through and through it still sucks what
the marshalls did to Hamilton
hadn't heard about the penalty till I read about today on Auto Weekly

once again a tight fight for the driver's title
also talk of the F1 returning to the US in 2010
and better yet (to me at least) to a possible venue in the west coast.

...and RIP Phil Hill.

Alonso potentially going to BMW??
BMW Sauber team boss Mario Theissen says he is ready to wait for Fernando Alonso to make a decision about his future before confirming his team's driver line up for 2009. Ferrari's announcement that Raikkonen has been signed for another two seasons ended months of speculation that Alonso could move to the Italian team next season and now his options beyond Renault lie with either Honda or BMW. Alonso is understood to be free to leave Renault if he wishes, given that the team has not achieved the performance levels required to automatically retain him and while Honda would be a major gamble, the former champion is expected to favour either staying put, or moving to BMW. Two strong drives in Belgium and Italy in the past two round have done nothing to harm Alonso's desireability. "There are several people and and a few teams who have to make a decision, it's not necessarily a joint decision," Theissen told Autosport when asked if he was waiting on Alonso. "We're still evaluating the situation and it is apparent we are the strongest team now which has an open seat for next year, so we'll see what happens." The rumour in the Monza paddock was that the team has already taken its option on Robert Kubica and the Pole is confirmed for 2009.

dam the hell he keeps changing teams..he aint happy with the millions he already makes? lol.. i know i know hes tryin to land on a wining team :keke:

Really he was at fault there. Massa went over the corner and spun him. But I still think your right. he should of just chilled out. And I wasn't happy with him at the start when he cut his teammate Kovalainen.

Now Massa is near points... and Hamilton is 3 spots away from points.

HyperTek

well im a hamilton and mclaren fan.. it seems tho he cracks under pressure when he gets near the championship title.. Things get risky. Pretty sure hes been hearing alot about finishing above Massa and the ferraris, and he eventually pushed too hard for it in the beginning.

Alonso did a good job. I wanted to see more of the Kubica vs kimi battle. Piquet did a good job staying with them. He has improved alot in the past few races, compared to how he was doing during his debut races with dnfs.

I like Kubica too, he stays consistent with his driving. He doesnt take as many risks as the others, but more strategical.
