Hello Everyone, my name is Jon. Well, I always wanted to get a s13 since my friends introduced me to drifting, but never really got a chance to. Several months ago my girlfriend needed to buy a car. Just so happened, one of my friends was moving away, so he sold it to her. It is a 1989 coupe with an auto KA24E... Ever since then, its been in my garage back at home. (Its okay though, she has a car to drive since my sister left to college) I get to work on the car once a week, due to working mondays-saturdays in another town about an hour away. Anyways, just thought i would post my progress of what ive done so far and will plan to update hopefully every weekend. I didnt know if i should post or not, notice a lot of build threads lately too, so i didnt want to be just another build thread. but hey, i just thought maybe i could get some helpful tips if i need them... other than searching of course. Used some can paint: Plasti-kote vinyl spray paint. Pretty good stuff, I accidentally scratched and dropped some peices on accident and the paint adhesion is pretty good, i havent had the paint come off yet... but hey, we will see how long it actually last when its installed.

Installed those "JDM" power folding mirrors. found that using the housings for manual mirrors work just fine. When i did the conversion i couldnt find any info on whether or not i would need at least the automatic mirror housings and those triangular peices. Also, i think i got a mirror switch for an S14, but got it wired up and made it work. Its just one of those nice little things to have :P

well, thats pretty much updated for now. yesterday they had a sale and welding thing at gaspro, so got a chance to try out some welders and ended up finally picking one up. its a miller 140 autoset... later on i think ill get the spool mate gun and argon so i can weld some aluminum. anyways, hope you guys enjoy

the fabric actually just peels right off pretty easily :P

as for the KA, probably will be stock for a while, just trying to get the body back to original condition. and the ichibas, my friend actually had a set, and they seem to be holding up, and also the guys at phase2motortrend recommended them as well.

nice project.. shouldve welded new metal sheet instead of fiberglass to keep the chasis rigid... what did you do on the frame rails? anyways apply some por150 over the rusty area and and seam seal them so they wont corrode in the future.. good luck

yeah, i shouldve welded sheet metal, but at the time i did not have access to a welder i just wanted to get it done to finish up the bay, so fiberglass will have to do. as for the frame rail, i figured welding in peices of steel would be okay, but since pretty much the whole peice is rusted out, im just gona replace it with an oem rail and weld that in :D and the por150, i tried to find some, but only places i would be able to get it would be the internet, and they want a lot to ship due to it being a chemical and stuff. so i just picked up some rust inhibitor stuff from a local automotive shop, i hope it holds up...

My wife's car is the same way, as a matter of fact, her cowl was so rusted, the piece came off where the driver's side wiper arm bolts to, in the middle of the rain when she was driving, so needless to say her car has been parked since then. (it's also parked because of an oil filter that will not come off, and has since been mangled when I tried every trick in the book to get it off)

Anyway, your project gives me lots of hope to restoring her car, as it has potential, we just lack the funds to get it to a reputable body shop to get it looking pretty again.

oh wow, that sucks. i feared that something like that could happen to the wipers on this car too if it were to be driven around for a while longer. but im happy it will be solid now. as for the oil filter, do you have an oil filter wrench pliers? cuz those things can take off any oil filter, or at least all the filters i have to deal with at work.

well, i got some stock s14 se alloys sitting in my garage, probably put those on for now. also got some bronze work emotion cr kais, but its mounted to my mr2 as of now, and i want to leave em there. would be nice to find a decent set of te37's in bronze one of these days, but that i can worry about later. ill post pics later if i find em or ill go take some more.

yeah, at the time i didnt have access to a welder, but now i just picked one up this week as stated in my last of the pics post, so at least i can weld together the lower frame and radiator support area due to rust not shown in pics.

How did you lay down the primer? products used? gun?
i actually just shot the engine bay with spray can primer. even though i have a whole gallon of primer/sealer and a new devilbliss spray gun sitting at home. but yeah, first was using bondo for body filler, but that sucked. ended up using rage body filler, its real smooth compared to the bondo... or at least for me. and just filled the small holes with that green 3m puddy stuff. i might just spray the engine bay with spray can gloss black... since its just the engine bay, when i plan to paint the car ill use the spray gun.

Hmm, its actually a finish line 3. i probably wouldve saved to get a better gun, but this one was actually given to me for free brand new since my friend moved away. as for the product, its decently good for the price. my other friend had this same gun and the quality was not bad.

Very nice! Reminds me of when I was getting all the little things on my Wagon done! Sanding everything, painting with spray cans and making them look better than new! Engine bay paint... What I used was this "Truck Bed Liner" spray paint. It lays on thick and smooth, and has a "roughened" texture. I sprayed over it with a gloss black. Last week, I got brake fluid on it (paint+brake fluid=stripped paint!) and was VERY glad to see that the gloss black peeled off, but the bed liner paint stayed on there! It's really durable, and hasn't scratched at all since I tossed it on...

I'll get a picture of the can for you, as it turned out REALLY clean IMO. Great work so far, man, can't wait to see it going! It's cool that you two are working together! +1

on the big island

anyways, didnt get much done today. fixed me landlords window yesterday, so free rent for the month. pretty much assembled the welder and tested it out made sure it was in working condition and nothing was wrong with it. took some measurements for the radiator support, probably cut out some of the lower rad support and weld in a new bar across... but that shall be next weekend... or actually maybe the weekend after, think im going to be doing something for easter.

i actually just shot the engine bay with spray can primer. even though i have a whole gallon of primer/sealer and a new devilbliss spray gun sitting at home. but yeah, first was using bondo for body filler, but that sucked. ended up using rage body filler, its real smooth compared to the bondo... or at least for me. and just filled the small holes with that green 3m puddy stuff. i might just spray the engine bay with spray can gloss black... since its just the engine bay, when i plan to paint the car ill use the spray gun.

is rage body filler way better than bondo? i want to work on my engine bay as well and get the best stuff to smoothen the bay a lil bit.. and you used 3m putty stuff to fill holes? how is it holding up...

well, the evercoat is a lot lighter to work with. but honestly, i would say its pretty much how you apply it and the tools you have to work with. they will both hold up as long as the surface your working on is preped correctly. as for the 3m stuff, i like it, it fills the small holes, but also sandable primer also works for smaller holes. this is just from my own experience... just try and try again. after a while you get the idea i guess.

so yeah, finally going to have full weekends. just got my evaluation and raise stuff at mazda. leaving toyota next saturday, so more time to work on the car, and more time to have a life, lol.

tested the paint i got for the engine bay, only sprayed the firewall back half for now, still gotta fab, cut a weld a new radiator support, going to try do this next weekend.

but heres a few pics of the gloss black, i think it looks decent... its only for the engine bay. you guys think i should spray a coat of gloss black over the undercoating in the fender wells?

I've recommended it before (maybe in this thread, I don't remember) but the big blue cans of "Truck Bed Liner" spray paint work wonders... I sprayed my engine bay and wheel wells with it, it looks very very clean, and the texture hides a lot of imperfections. Great for wheel wells, but since you cleaned your engine bay so well, that gloss black would looks slick.

i was actually thinking about redoing the fender wells with truck bedliner instead of the rubberized undercoating, but seems to be holding up, so i think ill just stick with it... would be a lot of work to remove the undercoating anyways:P would you or anyone else know if the gloss paint will adhere to the rubberized undercoating? just wondering

so yeah, yesterday was my last day working on saturdays, sure feels great knowing im gona have full weekends from now on. more time to spend with my girlfriend and work on the car, lol. but yeah, got to use the welder, works great... some parts were a little sketchy though, gotta practice more and the wind didnt help either. fabbed up some brackets for the lower radiator support. and of course finished painting the engine bay, im pretty stoked about how it came out :)

Full tear down/rebuild.

I've already completed the body(came with no front end), got a full wiring harness, spare KA that's going to be rebuilt, and picked up more paint materials.

How much of the frame rails can you actually buy and replace?

I think one of mine has a small rot spot.. I forget where it is though. I might be lucky and be able to patch the spot.

Awesome build though.. Im happy to see someone actually Restore a car instead of trash it and look for a cleaner one for a project.

ok, finally got some updates. found more rust on the frame rail behind the frame rail, so i just ended up cutting out the rails and the floorboard on the driver side. got some free 16g sheet metal from my landlords brother in law. cut some peices and did some measurements and started patching the hole i made. i know the welds look like crap, but ill work on that.

Yeah luckily other then the driver side rocker there is NO other rust on the car, I dont know what happen on the passenger side though. Its why I ended up subscribing to this thread, seems to be close to what I have to do.

Doesnt seem so. Its only in those spots you see there. If it was leaking it would be all alone the firewall. I think where the rail is it rusted from inside out (rail holding water). Wouldnt be the first time, my Hard Body Pickup frame rusted from the inside out too over the rear tires. The other sections I believe are from the passanger side missing the splash gaurds. The rocker panels I can trace back to the sun roof. Nissan and their infinite wisdom chose to drain the sunroof right into the rocket panels. My 200SX (B14) is rusting inside the door jams too so it seems they kept doing it across plateforms and a redesigned platform later.

okay, so ive decided to do a tear down of the engine just because. seemed like front cover was leaking oil, had some residue build up. timing seemed good. planning to just tear down the engine replace all the gaskets and seals, replace timing chain/tensioner, waterpump and pretty much clean it all up. got a lot of parts to clean now, lol. probably start with the trans tommorow.

Just something for you to think about. You may want to replace the oil pump and regulator valve set prior to installing the engine back into the car. Got these from the Nissan dealer for around $60.00. I rebuilt a '97 block w/87K miles and replaced the pump and regulator valve anyway cause you never know what the last guy did(or never did) to it!! Cheap insurance considering how much oil pump failure would cost in the long run!!!

Here are the part numbers:
Oil gear set: 15020-53F25
Regulator valve set: 15132-77A25

hmmm, only $60 bucks? meh i just finished installing my oil pan, and bottom front cover. Whats the chance of having a bad oil pump? They dont go out much do they?

You never hear of one going out but its cheap considering the cost if you lose all oil pressure at 18psi!! I would check the clearances based on the FSM:

did you get upper and lower timing chain and tensioners and guides? make sure you replace them.. i see box but im not too sure if you have everything...be prepepare to replace the some of the hose there.. mine just broke when i pulled the front timing chain cover.. make sure you remove all the silicone on the cover and engine and put a nice bead of gasket to seal it...

AC wont help much... unless you want to let the car sit for a good 10 minutes before driving it. I have some cheap one I bought from AA thats black... The best to do is just not keep your hand on it. lol

well, today i had to help with clearing out a garden today to get ready to plant some stuff. but when i had time, i put together the steering rack again and mounted it to the subframe. forgot my tools, so couldnt really do much. im hoping next weekend ill have a pulley puller by then and i can teardown the engine... finally. maybe have it done in that weekend, depending on the paint.

this week was really interesting. monday morning woke up having been bitten by a lot of ants. that afternoon, got a hit and run on my corolla... just some scratches across the front bumper, but sucks its practically new... kinda. got a new roommate in the house. got my safety check license in the beginning of the month for work, someone went on vacation, so im left being the only one in the shop being able to write, so i feel like i spend half the day at work writing them up. and today, helping out a friend do a timing belt on his acura, man... those crank bolts are stuck on there pretty damn good... took a while even with the impact gun... i feel my 3/8 snap on is much stronger than my 1/2 quiet IR. time for a stronger 1/2 gun.

but yeah, got the engine down to the block, cleaned it and got some paint. gotta wait for the new oil pump gear and reg to come in before i start putting back together, but other than that, seems to be going pretty well.

what are u using for ur undercoat... when i did my similar project i had really good luck with the dupli color spray on bed liner in the blue can at all the auto junk stores.. i hate the rubber crap..

just some permatex brand rubberized undercoating, i do hate it as well. i did want to go with the bedliner, but i ended up doing this for some reason... wish i went with the bedliner stuff.

Nice work with the frame rails! I was flipping thru some of the previous pages and ran across the images showing how much rust had eaten the underside. Its only been 5 months since this thread was started and I am really impressed with how this coupe is turning out in such a short amount of time.

WOW! thanks for the comment. sure makes me feel better about the project. definitely takes some dedication, i wish i did more, but sometimes with only a couple days off a week id rather relax than go outside and work. and sometimes i got more important bills to pay than buy more stuff for the car, so itll have to wait. i figure if your going to do something, do it good the first time around. i mean, it sucks not being able to drive it, but it will be worth it im sure of it.

Does take some time and experience finding out the correct settings for the pressure and flow rates!! It varies even with the type of paint and how thin it is.

The color on the Aspec 240sx is a Color that came out in 2003 Infiniti FX35 and 45....the color in called Berillium and looks so sic in person!!!!

When you see it in person it is different and so bitchin...I dont know the color code but any decent Automotive paint store should be able to look it up???

It doesnt drain correctly. Atleast not in the S13s. While stripping mine, I found out all four corners drain down through tubes, but the tubes stop right at the rocker panels and its left up to the frame to drain it out from there. I think the B14 is the same way because they are known to rust in the door jams.

anyways, finally got the last of my parts i needed to reseal the engine. so today got some parts cleaned, painted and installed back together. just waiting for a socket to torque down the cam sprockets and letting the oil pan dry. other than that, replaced timing chain and parts; replaced water pump; replaced thermostat; replaced oil pump gear and regulator; replaced all seals and gaskets; and placed the candy apple red v/c on the engine just because :bigok: heres some pics, not a lot, but today seemed like i did a lot. :hsdance:

going to need a new alternator, old one is full of grease and debri and sounds kinda funny when i turn the pulley. as for the ac compressor, it will need a cleaning and im going to have to retrofit the r12 to r134a, guess ill be buy a new evap core, drier and expansion valve as well... must have ac :P

as for getting something almost done, its nice to see progress and actually using parts ive been collecting for the past almost year or so. lol

Yeah, I agree. Do the R134 retrofit. Its cheaper than going with the expensive R12, that stuff is almost as expensive as gold!!

haha... yes, today i finally turn 21. actually its not really a big deal, doesnt feel any different. but its been a good day, just drinking a beer i went and bought legally... lol. well, theres not much updates here really. last weekend did a timing belt job on my moms camry and with the other time i had left started grinding the intake manifold down more to be polished. its so much easier with a mini sander/grinder. well, i think i plan to repaint the engine bay, underbody and trunk... along with all suspension arms a two stage black paint... should be nice... time consuming, costly, but nice. well, off to dinner i go... more updates this weekend.

How much was the Nissan Timing chain the tensioners? I was gonna use OSK timing parts but if the Nissan stuff isn't too bad I'll ante up and get those; I'm not really a fan of aftermarket (except the performance aftermarket). Plus, working for a dealer allows for discounts :P

I actually got the OSK stuff from FRSport. Fits fine, i hope it works fine. im assuming since they sell it, must be decent/quality stuff. But hey, if you work at a dealer, might as well get the genuine stuff. Too bad i dont own a Mazda or Subaru, lol.

So i was driving by the toyota dealership today after work and finally saw the brown color ive been looking for. It was a 2009 tacoma, checked it out online when i got home. Pyrite Mica, Looks pretty nice IMO.

Ordered a 2001 Quest alternator, going to do the retrofit.

Possibly getting more stuff from FRsport, waiting for a reply on a quote.

And... Anyone got a Circuit Sports aluminum resevior tank And Nismo clutch fork pivot bolt/stud for sale?... let me know!

Just got the 99-02? Nissan Quest 125a alternator, as well as a reman starter. Decided to try see how difficult it really is to get it to fit... being the engine is out of the vehicle, it is probably 10x easier. But here is what i got so far.

First made sure it was the correct alternator. Looks good and new.

Drilled the holes larger on the pivot bolt side to fit the KA bolt. Working the hole with a smaller bit first helps with prepping for the next size bigger. 13/32" was a good size to end with.

Next, installing the alternator onto the engine... went on easy and everything lines up except the adjusting bracket. One write-up i found said to grind the top of the alternators adjusting hole to make the bracket flush, but i found this still does not work as well because the end of the bracket still touches the alternator front housing.

So i decided id make a spacer for the bracket between the front cover and bracket. First one I thought of wouldnt work because if the bracket is too far out it will touch the belt. So for tempory to get the size right, i found two nuts and placed them between and seems to fit good. Ill probably get a thick peice of metal, shape it and drill holes in it to be more solid.

Next was the belt, the four rib belt, fit alright, but was not perfectly aligned with the pulleys

So i tested out the three rib belt, and it seems to be a better fit by using the outer ribs on the crank pulley and the inner ribs of the alternator pulley as pictured

Plus, this way it fits better with the bracket i changed, it actually will have clearance.

So now, all i have to do is get a new sized belt next week and get some metal to space the bracket out and some longer bolts. Hopefully i wont have to grind more parts of the alternator as i put the intake manifold parts back together... if so, oh well.

Ok.. its been a while since ive been inside the car. Decided to make the headliner fit the japanese manual seatbelt conversion trims. So heres the new trim with the stock headliner. Didnt really find any write-ups or anything on what to do about it. Im assuming people just replace it with the japanese headliner, or just reapply new headliner material and let the rest hang below the trim... which i think would look gross.

Thats a pretty big gap, so heres what i did. First i made a cardboard cutout to fill the gap.

Then used some 3m spray on adhesive and mold the cardboard to the material and gap.

Then i took the old headliner material and just layed it over the cardboard just to get a flatter surface.

Well, heres what i did today. Worked on fitting the not-so-well-fitted aftermarket carpet. I swear i never want to do this again, i could not get it to fit well without having to do the innevitable... spray on adhesive. I figure if i need to ill just rip it off and re-apply adhesive again. And got all the holes cut.

Anyways, i just got the driver side pretty much finished... need to go buy more adhesive.

Also cleaned up the ac compressor, it was covered in grease. Everything seems to be alright, clutch seems to grab with pressure and compressor spins without noise or grinding.

Thats a nice headliner you got their... But yeah, the carpet, I got it from some online site, I really cant remember it was so long ago, lol. I remember shipping was a pretty penny as well. Its no OEM fitment, but yes, like you said it does look a lot better than old beat up carpet. And that black really looks nice, but I think i am going to go with a tan colored one, lighten things up a little.

So many things to do on this car, and I dont have enough time or money to do it all at once. I really want to finish by the end of this year, it really would be nice. I guess, its a goal to strive for :P

Well today i tried again at the carpet, im planning on finishing it tommorow at the latest. Also, started making a spacer for the alternator bracket, it was going smooth until the drill bit broke in the metal... now its even harder to drill through. Other than that today i retrofitted a mazda 6 LED third brake light into the car, lol.

as a matter of fact, yes... its actually on wooden benches, lol. I needed the car higher than the jacks could go so this was the best i could find at the time. i wish i had a rotisserie (sp?), or if i had time and materials to make my own that would be great. Being that im here in hawaii i think i would have to make my own anyways.

okay, so this weekend i had to organize things, i had all kines of stuff going on in the garage lately... it was a mess.

so once that was done, i really want to get the dash back on, so i pulled the evap core, one of the last things ill need to replace under the dash. it really is gross, not used to the older cars without a filter. found some bugs, leaves, all kines stuff. but i gotta replace it because i dont think it connects with the newer style ac lines... im just hoping the air con box didnt have a change and stuff like that... if not, i guess i could make some modification to make it work.

i also gotta make the holes for the radiator support, so i test fitted the radiator and it fits pretty well. maybe next weekend ill weld the brackets in and drill some holes. i might also weld supports for the tension rod brackets and lower control arms.

also, feeling kind of dumb because i wasted paint using spray can to paint the engine bay. im going to go back and do a 2 stage on the engine bay, underbody of vehicle, and trunk.

okay, saturday i did nothing all day. was being lazy...

so today, i figured id make up for it, lol.

today i finally cut some metal and welded that front tension rod brace stuff. came out alright.

grinded away more rust, cleaned up some welds and re-sanded the whole engine bay and a little bit under the car. then prepped it with some grease/wax remover. primered the car, this time with the paint gun.

finally sprayed the clear... i had a hard time getting the settings good. although i wish i had more time, by the time i was getting done with the base coat, the sun was going down... found out later i missed some spots with the base (like behind the strut towers and under the front rad support and brace), but oh well... looks better than it did. so yeah, i sprayed the clear kinda thick, two coats. i wanted to spray more, but i couldnt see anymore so i stopped. i hope its enough so i dont wetsand through it.

but yeah man, these projects are time consuming... wish i had the car at home though, then i could work on it every day when i felt like it instead of having to drive back to my hometown and work on it during my weekends. i think im at about 1 year and 3 months maybe? haha, so long already...

also, just a quick question for you painters... i plan to do a few more coats of clear for the engine bay. how should i prep the surface of the old clear before i spray? do i have to wetsand to a uniform, unblemished surface? or can i lightly sand and scuff the surface, clean and paint? this has been my second time trying to paint, so yeah, any help would be appreciated!

but yeah, i figure since i picked up these big wheels, it will probably look better with a nice, yet simple looking kit. hope you guys like the origin stylish kit... i do, lol. i started drawing some pictures just to get an idea of how my idea in my head looks like on paper. so far it looks interesting, will post pics of it when i am done with it.

also, i am set on...

- a s13 silvia front end [bricks headlights, gtr style grill, cf oem style hood, 20mm wide fenders... maybe]
- origin stylish kit for s13 silvia... hoping on a roof wing as well. no rear wing for now.
- pbm adjustable arms
- cs aluminum coolant resevior tank
- cusco strut tower bars
- lightened one piece driveshaft
- dif variable speed fan controller
- bride ergoII's in red

i dont really care most of this stuff is more expensive than its actually worth getting or overrated and what not, but i feel it is what this car needs to be what i want it to be. so however long it takes me to get it, it will be done! at least the parts list i know i need for this project is getting smaller... :P

ps... if anyone can hook me up on these parts let me know! haha, its worth a try.
