What's the difference between bottom and side mounting seats, and do they use the same or different sliders?

The way I interpret things now is that bottom mount seats are mounted on brackets, and can only be adjusted by unbolting the seat and re-bolting it in in a different position, while side mount seats to be ones that sit on/in a slider, and can be adjusted with that.

Or are side- and bottom-mount seats limited to reclining- and fixed- seats (respectively)?

Almost all side mount seats are fixed buckets made of a shell of fiberglass or carbon fibre. Tube frame seats are usually bottom mount, and those are also the ones that are usually reclinable.

Does that at least help a little?

Oh, and yes, they use different sliders.

Ahh, I see. Thanks, it did help.
So are there any seats that are both side and bottom mount to give us an option?
I assume, then, that bottom mount seats are the most 'streetable', whereas side mounted seats are more race-oriented.

That said/asked/answered, what are some of your (all of you) opinions re: Corbeau, Momo and Sparco? I'm not looking into either Recaro or Bride, because frankly, they're too expensive. (Although I absolutely love the Bride Brix and Ergo, and the Recaro SRD...) How about OMP and CROSS (JIC's seats)?
Where did those of you who have seats buy them?

Sparco and Momo are very good. Corbeau is for the more budget-minded racer. Still good, but the materials aren't as durable.

One other thing. Are you tall? Bottom mount seats are going to raise you up quite a bit.

well, i woudl suggest going with the JIC or Recaro SRD
srd runs about 550
reclinables are under 550 i believe for JIC. quite comfy and probably comperable to brix and srds. i mgiht get one but i'm getting a bride next year (jan or august). so....

avoid sparco speed. the price is cheap but you'll sit high. i know i USED to own one.

i have a problem with my bottom mount seats
i have a set but i cant find rails or brackets to mount them on my S13... the problem with the S13 is the driver side cuz the driver side is not flat on the floor board
i posted it like a million times and no one can help me
so i figured Bride is the only ones that have the rails but they r on back order

Am I tall? What, is that an attack on my manhood or something? haha... I'm kidding. No, I'm not particularly tall (but don't underestimate me! hahahaha), but I'm not exactly looking through the steering wheel to drive. I'm not too worried about sitting a litte higher (~1-2"?) but if I sat any higher than that, life might be hard with a helmet on.

That said, I guess you might call me the "budget racer" ... I can't afford to spend $800 on Bride Brix or Recaro SRD and sliders, though I'd love to if I could. (plus I just spend f*#@&+%ing $370 on a Simpson helmet! )

I'm looking more in the $300 range (can stretch to 350 per seat), which puts most reclinables out of the picture. I'm not too worried about lack of adjustability though, as this is not a daily driven car. Granted, it IS important to be able to put the seat in a position where driving is not overly uncomfortable. (no kidding eh?) Is there a definitive list of whose sliders (for bottom mount) fit well in 240s and whose don't?

bride brix are about 600 in japan. you can getused ones for 400 or so..im going to japan next year...im getting one.

anyways, the height adding was an issue for ome, i'm 5'10 or so. and looong legs so it was a problem. i didnt like it. hated that sparco. bucket was nice and comfy but not worth othrewise. im getting a JIC early next year and the bride in august. anyawys. get JIC or Recaro SRD
jic makes reclinable ones. its not that expensive. use sparco rails i think? i forget.

300 per seat? If you go cheap you get cheap: sparco sprint. JUNK IMHO.

definative list? YES nothing in the USA works well. including Sparco Corbeau etc. you can drill the rails and bolt the seat directly to the floor rail. sliders are where the inches up are added!! beware!

budget racer? i dont believe in that. safety and quality come first!!

helmet? get a bell thru PDM. chaep cheap!

Dousan,

No need to be so harsh. First off, not all people are skinny bastards. I could not ever squeeze into a Bride seat...Brix or otherwise. I'm 6'2" 230 lbs (yeah, too much beer...shut up). I sat in some Sparco Evo 2 and they were AWESOME. That's what I'm getting. Maybe even the Evo 3...depends. I agree that Corbeau are "budget" but Sparco is nice. Don't rag on everything USA.

My advice: Bride sliders with Sparco bucket. Like this guy:

I ended up getting a simpson through simpson. -_- The guys over there don't know shit! One guy who helped us was nice, but didn't know jack about the helmets they had, while the other guy in the office (chubby white guy, short/shaved hair/head) was a complete DICK. I regret buying the helmet (as nice as it is) from them ... that guy in there was THAT big of an ass. I'm going to email simpson Cust. Serv. about that.

Anyway. My rant aside, I'm kind of swaying towards a used momo fixed bucket in the $250 range, and I'll try a set of sparco or corbeau sliders (since I'm not that tall and it wouldn't hurt too much) but will keep all that's been said in mind. I personally don't like the sparcos that much, I guess it's just the way they look (to me). I'll look into the Cross seats too. Do cross/JIC make sliders as well, or do you have to get the Bride sliders?

edit: Aaron, is it the sparco speed or sparco sprint that are bad... or did you own both? I just noticed that you have differet model names in your last two posts.

edit: do either Sparco, momo or corbeau sliders even FIT in the S13? I know corbeau have a slider that's (apparently) made for our cars (or at least S13)... which is the "lesser of these evils" so to speak? I'm hoping to get a seat in for this Saturday's speedtrialUSA event.

you can use bride sliders with:
sparco evos
sparco rev

jic type r and s..problably but not 100% sure

bigger body shapes fit in some bride models, but the evo series is the best stateside. the rev was abit slim. i have tried a lot of seats so i'm not talking out of my ass.

im saying the BOTTOM MOUNT rails/sliders from sparco and wedge engineering suck. go to phase two and under 240sx interion compare the blitz and wedge sliders. the ones i have sitting waitng for a seat seat just as low (i was told lower by jspec) then bride. so its all about your slider/rail for bottom mount.

im saying if you go cheap you wont be happy. i believe in doing thing one time. after i screwed up with the sprint, i'm not doing that again. hence, why i'm getting an SRD or JIC reclinable for driver for a few months then the bride.

jic uses sparco sliders. i called them on that recently
sparco sprint: to me it was horrible. i didnt like it at all, i had it for a fw weeks and sold it. speed sprint? sorry i meant sprint. actually the speed and sprint are the same setup, just hte speed has nicer side fabrics for less wear. but thye mount the same=sit the same

you should get side mount bucket. bottom mount reclineables. just watch what rails you use!!

talk with me at the track adey, i'll be there. my friend i sold my sprint to is coming by. dont make a rash decision please! i dont want you to regret it. its not bad without a seat. its liveable. id get a nice harness if i were you, at least you have more secure there before you go all out on a seat

JIC-Magic discontinued their bucket seats. Something about not FIA legal or some mumbo jumbo. Either way the sole distributor in the US (ziel) only has a couple left. Blue, Yellow.

This was from an email a friend of mine got when asking which sliders it used.

Do you guys know if Recaro sliders (bottom mount) work with MOMO (bottom mount) seats?
Will the Recaro slider fit in our car, or are they designed specifically for different cars?
Thanks!

recaro sits high too. richard (JDMRICE/TANGKAI) had his rails drilled w/ his recaro seat

dont know if they'll fit momo.

well i just need to know who make bottom mount rails made for the S13?
if the fit under i can always custom a piece to mount between the seat and the rails.......

i had my seats for months now and they dont mount up with universal rails (f*ck the word universal) cuz it doesnt fit mine

How high is too high? higher than the sparco rails sit? ... Dang so our only real option is Bride rails?? *sigh* ....

around an inch. go grab a book that thick and sit on it for a day. see how it is. to me: too much. but i'm a perfectionist, i have my bride style rails already. it was worth every penny.
i'd say go all out for the right rails and you wont be disappointeed with your seat.

If ease of adjustability of the seat doesn't matter to you, then just get a custom mount made. I mean if your gonna use it as a track car, your probably not gonna have too many diffeent people driving, and the roll cage behind the seat will limit anyone from trying to crawl in the back.. I've seen evo2's in an s14 on custom mounts that sat at a very nice hieght. I'm 6'4" 210lbs and my head was a good 3" from the roof w/ helmet on.

After driving for the first time in a helmet today, I have completely revised my take on this matter!! Even at my not-so-tall height of 5'7", my helmet was about an inch to 2 inches (max) from the ceiling! I normally have NO issue WHATSOEVER with the roof, but helmets change a *lot*. I had no idea they added that much padding!

Anyway I guess this little track experience has 'opened' my eyes to the world of little details (such as sliders) that make such a big difference in your own car, and why so many people have such different personal preferences. I guess I'll be going with the Bride sliders, too.

Now, on to where I can get ahold of these...... and no, I'm not ready to shell out four hundred fucking dollars for Jspecs pair!! Dousan, where'd you get yours? And can anyone else recommend a shop for Bride sliders?

edit: sykikchimp- that's a good idea. (custom mount, that is) ... but how much do these usually run (for materials and labor), and what's safety like when it's a one-off, custom install/make?
