ok.. i spent couple hours lookin on this forum for the differences between the sr20det motors. Finally i gave up googled it. and this is something i cut and pasted from another forum. (so no flaming. i'm not trying to take credit for someone elses knowledge.) i got it from here...
http://www.nissanforums.com/sr20de-det-engines/134309-s13-s14-s15-sr20det-differences.html but anyway...

Red-tops are sourced from older generation as opposed to black-tops. There are several different black-top SR20DET's. All with interchangable parts, but there are differences. You're better off with a black-top. "Primary" differences between an S13 black-top and S14 black-top are S14 has shorter intake (http://www.nissanforums.com/sr20de-det-engines/134309-s13-s14-s15-sr20det-differences.html#) runners & plenium, variable intake cam timing, and
ball-bearing turbo. SMIC's are different according to chassis of origin.

'91-'93 S13 SR20DET:

Red valve cover. Alloy aluminum block and head with Steel alloy cylinder sleeves.
Displacement: 1998cc ( 2.0 liter) Cam type: DOHC 16valve, chain driven cam sprockets.
Bore and stroke: 86mm X 86mmCompression: 8.5:1
Peak Hp: 205hp @ 6000 rpm Peak Torque: 28.0 kg @ 4000 rpm (203 ft.lbs).
Stock boost: 0.5 bar ( 7psi)Throttle body bore: 60mm.
Turbo: Garret T25/T04B compressor wheel. A/R 0.64 on exhaust (http://www.nissanforums.com/sr20de-det-engines/134309-s13-s14-s15-sr20det-differences.html#) and 0.80 on compressor.
Injector size: 370cc/min, side feed.
Ignition: distributorless, crank angle sensor activated, direct fire coil packs.
Oil pan capacity: 3.7 L
Spark plug gap: 0.9 mm (0.035").

'94-'98 S14 SR20DET

Black valve cover. All specs the same as S13 , except for the following changes:

Turbo: Garret T25 exhaust, T3 compressor wheel. A/R 0.64 on exhaust and 0.60 on compressor.
Variable valve timing system (Nissan's (http://www.nissanforums.com/sr20de-det-engines/134309-s13-s14-s15-sr20det-differences.html#) version of Honda's VTEC!).
Peak hp: 220hp @ 6000 rpm Peak torque: 28.0 kg @ 4800 rpm (203 ft.lbs).
The transmission is also a little stronger than the S13, and has a slightly lower gear ratio.
Compression: Spec: 156 psi, Min.: 128 psi, max diff. between cylinders: 14 psi.
S14 uses 'low port' intake design vs. S13 'high port' design.

'99-current S15 SR20DET

Black valve cover. The S15 was improved to overcome the problems of the S14.
Variable valve timing system (Nissan's version of Honda's (http://www.nissanforums.com/sr20de-det-engines/134309-s13-s14-s15-sr20det-differences.html#) VTEC!).
Peak hp: 247hp @ 6400 rpm Peak torque: 28.0 kg @ 4800 rpm (203 ft.lbs).
All specs same except for following changes:
Turbo: Ball bearing Garret T28 exhaust,T3 compressor wheel.
Injector size: 480cc/min Stronger rods, improved crank bearings 6spd manual transmission (http://www.nissanforums.com/sr20de-det-engines/134309-s13-s14-s15-sr20det-differences.html#).

S13 SR20DET comes in three types: redtop 91-93, blacktop 94-96, and blacktop 96-98.

S14 SR20DET comes in two types: blacktop 94-96, blacktop 97-98

S15 SR20DET comes in one type: 99-02 blacktop.

The 91-96 S13 SR are all the same, the 96-98 ones have slightly different electronics but is mechanically the same as the rest of the S13 SR.

S14 SR's depending on model year have different harnesses as well. Wiring is not the same between the two.

And the S15 SR is the worst to wire up; the differential houses the speed sensor, so a complete S15 6 speed swap requires the use of the driveshaft, the diff (helical LSD), and the gauge cluster to read the speed sensor.

hopefully this will save someone else the time in trying to find documentation on this.

before you get flamed for this...let me be the first to tell you that all this info is already covered on the SR20DET FAQ...maybe not all but most of it is...read through the faq and if there is something that you put in here thats not in there then add it on.....hes the thread:
