There was such a large variation in driver skill, that even though the novice, intermediate, and advanced skill levels went out at different times, there was still NO guarantee that a "faster" car wasn't going to get passed. At the beginning of the first day, with no experience, I was giving the pass signal to every car that came up behind me. By the end of the weekend I got to pass a Mustang Cobra in my stock, worn out car, blowing black smoke the whole way.

There wasn't any bent metal in the HPDE, and there typically isn't... because you're out there to learn, and have fun. The rules are set up so that you can concentrate on car control and learning the track, and not worry too much about other cars.

It was $289 for the weekend... 2+ hours of track time with an instructor plus class time.... worth every penny!

It is!

On the East Coast, a weekend goes for about $300+ (two days, two hours on track, two hours in classroom). No, you aren't road racing - you are at a school. You need a competition license and mucho safety equipment to race wheel-to-wheel. (West Coast is about $200+). Call your local track and see who puts on events, then find out when and how much.

Bent sheet metal is a no-no. Every HPDE I've been to there have been a couple of cars that have been lightly bent (that weekend, there was a Vette and a Bimmer that got tweaked in the school). Nothing major. In June, I saw and M3 and an FD that were totalled in separate, one-car incidents. Sh!t happens. One thing to consider is that in something like this, a 240 is MUCH safer than a C5 just because the limits are lower. Expensive cars get into expensive trouble.

As for the Saturn, Ryan is right. I'm a baby intermediate and I think I got the best of that one - but there is one that runs in advanced that would eat me alive. Not only are the drivers more or less experienced, but the cars are more or less prepped. My car is pretty much bone stock at 127K mi - right down to the tired, soft OEM s14 suspension. Once you get into a class where everyone is a better driver, like Int. and Adv., you find that a car w/ equal or lesser power and a better suspension will walk the hell out of you all over the track.

If you get the chance, get to a track day. You will learn as much about driving in a single weekend as in years of being on the roads.
