IDK, that's a lot of money. They must be really busy all the time. I can't imagine paying taxes on $62 billion.

i remember a news story that one of my professors told me about buffett. he took a survey of some of the workers in his office and asked them how much they paid in taxes. turns out buffett paid the least in taxes out of all the ppl surveyed, which i believe included his own personal secretary. even buffett said that he feels he should be paying a lot more in taxes than the rest of his white-collar staff.
buffett, if you don't know, is quite the charitable man. i remember reading that at least half, if not more, of his fortune will go to charity after he dies. ironically, the charity it'll be going to the bill & melinda gates foundation. they are also very big givers, just weird that $20+ billion goes to another rich person.

i wonder if he's not the wealthiest anymore cuz WA State taxes are off the fuckin charts. good gawd, we have the 5th worst in the country s what ive been told by 2 people in the past week.
Ya... I think you pretty much have to be charitable when you're that rich. All of them. I thought Gates was working on giving away the majority of his wealth...

He's actually the good kind of rich, the one that helps the world.

I'd love that. In my gov't class we've been talking about classes. And basically even tho they are in a higher tax backet. Does mean they are paying more. From what my professor said "when u take in how much u make and the given X amount going out for taxes is a greater % out with the lower class" And again i'm just stating what he said... I haven't researched it. so open for debate.

i remember reading that at least half, if not more, of his fortune will go to charity after he dies.
All of it. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Buffett)
In 2006, he announced a plan to give away his fortune to charity, with 83% of it going to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
My wife works at Geico, which is owned by Berkshire-Hathaway. She got to meet him (albeit only for a couple seconds while he came in to take a picture with everyone, and had to go).
He sounds really interesting.
Buffett is known for his unconventional style and frugality despite his immense wealth.[5] His 2006 annual salary of about $100,000 is tiny by the standards of senior executive remuneration in other comparable companies,[6] and when he spent $9.7 million of Berkshire's funds on a business jet in 1989, he jokingly named it "The Indefensible" because of his past criticisms of such purchases by other CEOs.[7] He continues to live in the same house in the central Dundee neighborhood of Omaha that he bought in 1958 for $31,500, today valued at around $700,000.[8]
It'd definitely be nice to meet him and pick his brain for a while.

Both Gates and Buffett have pledged to give nearly their entire fortunes to charity.

I wouldn't say USA is partly corrupted. They could be the most corrupt just because they have the facade of being the LEAST corrupt. Pretty much every govt is screwed up.

YES YES !!! +1 rep :bigok:

Yeah, I was wondering about that one day...but if you think about it, couldn't Bill Gates (or any of the other top billionaires) buy their own island and create their own country...and not pay taxes. Haha.
Anyways, last I remember Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are actually good friends. Thats why Bill Gates is one of the directors of Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffet's company.
Ya... I think you pretty much have to be charitable when you're that rich. All of them. I thought Gates was working on giving away the majority of his wealth...
He is. From an article I read a while back, I believe he is leaving it to his foundation as well as other philanthropy organizations. His kids get like .00000001 percent (give or take some zeros), which is still something like 100 million each. lol.

Weird how many of the world's richest people are from countries that most people assume to be poor.
axiomatik
03-10-2008, 07:26 AM
It's because those countries are like the US in the 1800's. They are the robber barons of their countries. With explosive economic growth comes the opportunity to become very wealthy, especially with lax corporate governence laws, and a lack of vocal and influential shareholders and anti-trust regulations.
Thought this was interesting, richest people through history, with their peak wealth adjusted to 2007 dollars. #1 on the list: John D. Rockefeller. He was worth $318.3 Billion in 2007 dollars. Makes Gates and Buffett look like kid stuff.
