1) take out the spark plug
2) put the compression tester down where the spark plug was screwed in, and screw the tester in
3) crank the motor while someone watches the tester. The needle will stop going up at some point. May need to crank once or twice.
4) repeat for the other cylinders.

im not to sure what the compresstion should be on a sr (or what ever you have) but make sure it holds the pressure, make sure that you have the car up to operating temp.
if comprestion is lower on a cylinder and not the others you should do a "wet" compression test next to single out the rings

but make sure you disable your fuel and ignition systems so it's not trying to fire up while you crank it. also, alot of people have told me that you must hold the throttle plate open to get an accurate reading.

right good call, I forgot about that. :bigok:
I was actually thinking in my head... what keeps the motor from starting... hmmm.
You gotta pull the fuel pump fuse, and keep cranking until the motor won't start anymore. THEN do the compression test.

If you have an SR, just unplug your CAS. Plug the tester in, crank the engine upto 5 revolution. Watch the needle jump 5 times. Per FSM, 125 is lowest acceptable number. I'd shoot for atleast 140. Also, all 4 cylinder should be within 20 psi of each other. So if you got something like 140, 150, 155, 160. Thats still healthy. If you get something like 120, and then everything else is roughly 150, then you have a dying cylinder.
Drop a cap full of oil and see if the compression jumps higher on that cylinder. 120 and then it jumps to 140, then thats a sign you have a leaking piston ring.

Main thing in compression test is that all cylinders are fairly close to each other, usually 10-15lbs is good. Well unless they are all really low like 110 or so, then it's time for a rebuild.
