View Full Version : What would be your idea of a good car movie?

I mean, something that hasn't been really done before.
We haven't really seen like anything close to technical in car movies. The last time I remembered someone talking about cars in a movie was when Megan Fox started talking about what was under the hood of that Camaro in Transformers.
What do you think would be a box office hit, as in a car movie that car enthusiasts wouldn't vomit to?

I have this really good idea for a movie (imo anyways) but nobody's gonna listen to me unless I have lots of cash, connections, or something else. I guess I'll just have to write it as a book instead. :-/
The story takes place in the late 60's- early 70's, involves lots of car chases, and does focus heavily on the characters and plot development. I'm still working on it. Can't give all of it away. I was inspired by many of my favorite movies such as Bullitt, The French Connection, The Seven Ups, Ronin, the original Gone in 60 Seconds, and so forth. I want to pay homage to some of them. Maybe someday I'll get it out there.
Anyways, it's really hard to come up with anything truly original nowadays, you'd just have to look for inspiration in other places. I guess car enthusiasts just want something that's nothing like the Fast and the Furious. Too lazy and sick right now to write an essay about this. I could go on and on about it.

How about a movie based on the californian street racing crews and how they live a 1/4 mile at a time?
What do you mean it has already been done MOFO? Then no, I have no idea.

I still think any car enthusiast likes Gone in 60 Seconds. A movie which is strictly about cars. Speaking of that... I think i am going to watch that now. I havent seen that movie in 2 years.

gone in 60 seconds really wasn't that good. i mean, i'm not saying i'm looking for a great film. but it wasn't that much about cars, even though they're stealing them throughout.
i'd like to see a car movie where if they talk technical aspects, they actually get it right, and don't just make shit up. it can't be that hard to look shit up.

Car movies are too predictable. Stuffing a movie with a bunch of cars for people to look at shouldn't be an excuse for a poor storyline.

Thunderball with Jackie Chan was pretty awesome. Especially the special effects haha.
I like "car movies" that have a lot to deal with cars but also have a solid story line, with good overall progression.

I would make a movie like karate kid but with cars instead of karate. It would be a hero's journey type of movie.

You know what I would like to see....and I know it seems pretty corny...a movie based on rally driving.
A life story of two (or more friends)...on how they started and how they place their mark in the professional WRC world. One does it for the money and loses himself (becomes twisted and evil), the other does it for the experience and fun (good guy), and somewhere in their a person dies from a horrid crash.......and there's a hot woman for eye candy.

honestly the premise of tokyo drift wasnt that bad...its just the fact that the acting and the made up bullshit kinda made it more goofy and a summer blockbuster than anything.....
but still the story line of a kid who gets in trouble at home and gets sent to live with his father in japan only to make friends and discover drifting...really is a decent story line its just shit like "yeah your like the justin timberlake of japan" that totally kills it. If that movie had stayed true to reality...actually dealt with some technical shit plus having him get better over more than like the 2 weeks it took him to be the best in japan then that movie could have been seriously badass....instead they chopped it up and added yakuza and lil bow wow getting beat up over an ipod

I still like watching Tokyo Drift, I'll admit. It comes after watching all of my Video Option DVD's a couple times each over a course of a few months though.
A movie like Days of Thunder in street form would by my idea of a good car movie.

There's a chinese movie called legend of speed, that was a pretty good movie, even though it looked like F&F copied it. It was made by the same guy who made infernal affairs or in america, the departed. It had a nice story and you got to know the characters. But Tokyo drift reminded me of it a little.

ahahah
they had to somehow add to the story
ahah
but in retrospect, i believe it is too hard for a movie to be too technical, of course, many would be interested, but a whole lot would get bored.
its hollywood, remember? the story can't be strictly nice & fast cars all they do is talk about tech stuff. if you want that watch speed channel or go on the internet. hollywood = romance, action, comedy......
i think if you wanted a serious car movie, it can be somewhat similar to the movie "lord of war" and how it is damn impossible to stop gun smuggling.........find a hot topic in automobiles and perhaps hollywood will listen.......cause so far every car/bike movie always related to going fast and getting the chick in the end

or the "oh well" as he looks at the camera and bombs through the house....
but ya days of thunder and gone in sixty seconds are badass movies still esp. gone in sixty seconds everyone here could prob agree to that. but they need to pull there heads out of there ass's and actualyl make a decent car movie. 2 fast 2 furious was absolutely fucking horrible and just makes us look worse honestly.

Ummm i think they should make a drift movie like talledaga nights.... but show more titties:wackit: the little kid could only say i wanna go sideways!! and then he met a car named herby...the drift wagon...and herbie brought him to some touge battles....and then the same chick from transformers was bent over his hood all movie....and then the drift king would be fishing and look over and be like damn nice ass
i think my movie would be off the hook
as long as they say a couple of SR20's would do us prime for drift wars

^^ I dont disagree that F&F really cant get too technical. However, there is a difference between super technical and a fucking convertible eclipse covered in vinyls being one of the main cars in the 2nd one, or the main chacaracter "drifting" a fucking AWD evo...why not actually look what the import scene looks like today? instead of mean looking cars with real paint jobs they use fucking lime green and bright ass pink cars and the cars "blow the welds on the intake manifold" and the floor pans fly off of them but miraculously paul walker is able to drive it fast enough to pick vin diesel up and run from the cops even tho the engine was fried minutes ago...and when vin gets in hes not dragging his feet on the road cause somehow the floorpan is back.......
huge difference between super realistic and a movie that the whole time you can hear ppl in the theater goin "yeah right"
i still watch F&F all the time tho...and own all 3 on DVD lol

I thought of a really cool one.
Theres a racing team. Top Tier professional driving team. no Underground BS. Its a Family-owned racing team, ie the owner is the father, soon to pass it down to his son, etc etc. They are rich to shit, that way, ALL this could EASILY happen. It mainly showcases three son's ties to the family.
One is a talented driver, super arrogant, but gets results. Second son is really formal, knows who to talk to, how to talk, all the managerial aspects of it all, the soon to be owner. The third is the step-son, who really doesn't give a rat's ass about it all. He's a closet nerd. REALLY nerdy. It progresses season by season, really showing how each one matures in their faults/strengths.
Some magical way, pops passes/dies/killed/suicide/freak-orgy-death or something. Team ownership goes to the second son. First son is a tad outraged, argues, and leaves the team.
<MORE DRAMA HERE>
<INSERT BROKEN-HOME>
Instantly picked up by the rival 'always second' team. The team is in shambles, stress is kickin in, #2 is really racked with overworking himself. Rival Team is pwning the shit outta them in every season there after. Step son mentions he'd like to help in any way possible, 2nd bro tells him to piss off. Unbeknown to all, the stepson's been learnin how to drive. AutoXing, cart racing, all that jazz, really gettin a feel for it. He starts posting good times off-season. He's let on the team to be the TireChangingGuy.
Secretly starts to change up the cars tire pressures. Slightly. Starts changing suspension settings. Slightly. Starts playing with engine control. Slightly. Starts to mod the living crap outta everything. Slightly. 2nd Brother finds out. Busts the shit outta him.
<Drama, but the kind that gets resolved>
Bro wants him to start driving pro, not lead, but just a wingman, just to get the feel. First bro hears about it, <MAJOR DRAMA, the kind that brothers beat the crap outta each other, and renounce their names and disowning the family kinda stuff> First Bro is mad because he let an outsider, the StepSon, onto the FAMILY team. Second bro counters with first bro going AWOL on em all for the rival team.
<More BS Filler Drama>
Step bro is gettin really good now. Starts hangin with the team R&D guys, pitching ideas, reasoning why he'd do this and that and this and that to the cars. makes sense. They implement his ideas onto his wingman car, and only his. because frankly, if it effs up, its just ONE car as opposed to 6+ cars. He greatly jumps ranks, and places better. A LOT better. he still isn't PRO at driving, but he's LEGIT TO SHIT with tuning. He watches vids and crap of First Bro racing, picks up his traits, sees his weaknesses, and learns his driving style.
New seasons up. Everyone gets a fresh slate. From a low trailing rank, the Family Team climbs up the ranks again. Last race of the season, rival team v family team FTW. Intense race. Shows all the intense action on the track, each team battling it out.
Step Son then catchs up to First Son, they go at it. Step Son effs up here and there, due to stress. First bro overly cocky as always. Step son comes back, right on his tail. First bro enters teh turn too hot, and understeers a tad, but maintains the lead. Step bro is on his ass, like a sailor on a whore. Tiny mistake after tiny mistake, each one starts to buckle under the stress. Showcasing the car's lower performances, and somehow the step son steps up his game, and overtakes first bro.
<MORE INTENSE DRIVING CRAP>
Step Bro wins race. First bro pissed to shit. <Street Fighter 2 Intro> First bro acknowledges step bros' skills, but won't accept him as 'family.'
<ENDING THAT TIES UP ALL THE LOOSE STRINGS, AND LEAVES AN OPEN ENDING FOR POSSIBLE SEQUEL>
OH, and at the end, theres a shoutout to haters. Two kids watching the event and say "man, just cuz he's got dad's money."

I was into drifting before the second F&F movie came out. By the time Tokyo Drift came out I was in awe of Colin McRae's godly skills... Now the next F&F movie is going to have Paul Walker with an STi. Dubyu-tee-eff. Everything I like turns into crap when these movies come out.
