I drive an S14.. Theres a few rattling noises that drive me absolutely crazy, one seems to be coming from the shifter, but then again, i hear it all over the damn car and not just from the shifter.. It usually happens in high gear at 4k rpms right where its natural frequency to vibrate is, then it just rattles like crazy.

I've looked a good bit and haven't found the source, I've even had my GF drive my car around while i crawled around inside of it searching for the noise. Things under the cabin appear fine, and i don't have any loose nuts/bolts..

I'm hoping someone may have some ideas of where to check.. Thanks!

Check your brake line clips and see if theyre loose or brittle (replace if they are), it worked for my s13 :D Also just check anything under your hood that is loose and would look like it would vibrate, usually stuff like that can trasnfer all the way into the car

i get alot of noise from the cabin after installing my solid motor mounts it's mostly coming from the steering column wiring rattling against the hard plastic covers for the column. also the b-pillar plastic on the inside tends to rattle sometime at high rpm. it's an s13 btw
hope this helps
you can always remove your interior pad it in some places then re-install it

good luck

My car used to be quiet until i got coilovers lol.. I wish there was a device that could pickup resonating sound waves and pinpoint them, just for this purpose.

Maybe somethings not balanced that makes the car vibrate? unbalanced rebuilt motor? driveshaft? Check everything that rotates when you can't find the rattle caused by loose bolts, nuts, etc.

check your mounts? and if you get rattling thru your steering wheel, it might be something suspension related. on my car, it was coming from a loose front bumper. i tightened it up and the rattle went away.

My gauge cluster buzzes. It's annoying as hell but it's too cold to go out and take things apart. All the gauges work fine though. It only does it from time to time.

got boost??

I have an S14 and after tons of suspension mods and Nismo Mounts, all my interior pieces like to rattle. Try the Glove Box and dash vent(by windshield), those are the 2 loudest in my car....I'm just too lazy to fix it.

And bo2o be lucky your GF doesn't, my wife wont stop bothering me to let her drive my car because she loves it.

my rear 1/4 plastics do - but thats due to removing the rear seat and requiring a spacer between the bolt and the plastic and some selastic to seal it up now...

Mine come mostly from the gauge cluster and the plastic by the backseats. Once I get new tires I am sure some of it will go away, got a flatspot in one of the rears.

the defrost vent on the s14 is a rattle master...removed mine and put doulbe face tape in a few spots. no more rattle

Honestly, the easiest way to get rid of those noises is just turn up the radio. Seriously, I don't know if you have any soild suspension links, coils, motor mounts, etc, but all that stuff will make your car have more noises. I got used to mine, nothing I can do about it.

The bracing under my hood used to rattle since it was completely detached from the underside of the hood, my sunroof rattles, plus a bunch of interior panels rattle...

Hell in my old car which was brand new...I had coilovers, solid motor mounts, etc, etc the thing rattled. I fixed it w/ a better stereo LOL

lol @ 1 year bump.

at least it's not as bad as the bump we had from 2003.

getting to the real point. how do you people hear these rattles. my exhaust drowns out all of this shit. i say if you can't physically feel the vibration, then there really isn't much wrong. just turn up your music.

sheesh...people stop complaining about small rattling noises, if you don't enjoy the noise just sell the car to me and purchase you a newer car with lots of sound deadening such as a BMW, Toyota, Lexus, BMW.... also I do have an S14 and it does rattle when I hit pot holes out here

I know S14's have the rattling noise under the passenger side airbag.. I know mine does and it drives me nuts.. plus the rear plastic trims around the seats rattle like crazy as well..

Fuck that. I don't have a BMW, Toyota, or Lexus so I rather pinpoint and stop the rattling I can. With that said my gauge cluster rattles which is really annoying. I also gotta wait how I put things into the glove or center console because it'll rattle If I don't position it a certain way. Also my headliner creaks (sunroof). I think the majority of these is because of my exhaust vibrates a lot against the body.

might be your exhaust manifold or downpipe heat shield rattling.. not sure how s14s are but i thought i had a bad bearing on my tranny..turns out after i removed my heat shields.. it stopped.. no more headaches at 3k+ rpms..

There's sound deadener with adhesive backing you can put on hard plastic areas and reduce rattling, it won't silence it but it will stop it from resonating when it shakes. Then there's the full job you could do, add 200lbs to your car and make it silent, but who wants that?
