View Full Version : Short ratio gears?

I have a friend into Hondas that figured out a lot of information about different gears and tricks that could be done with them within the b/d series trannies (ie using a flipped 2nd to make a shorter 3rd gear). I've yet to see anyone talk about gearing in our cars (whether it be SR or KA) except for changing rear diffs. Would you guys buy a close ratio gear set if it were available? Are there already aftermarket kits available?

I hope you've got A LOT of money to waste if you seriously want a close-ratio gearset, they aren't cheap! Another option is what the SCCA guys do. They run a dog-engagement racing transmission designed for chevy's. Apparently the 280z bellhousing bolts up to the trans and the KA engine, not the SR though. I'm pretty sure that the individual gears can be changed with ones that have different ratios, which allows the car to be re-geared for each track if you so choose. I dunno what clutch they use, the conversation didn't get that in-depth. I am eventually planning to look into this further.

Best bet is to change your final drive before you start messing with re gearing your tranny.

^^^ You are 100% correct sir! 99% of people don't need close-ratio gears anyways and 99.999999999999999% of people couldn't afford them in the first place.

The thing is, on a daily driven tranny, it seems like it'd be better to have shorter gears for 1-4 and then a regular 5th. Could I afford a longer fifth to combo up with a higher final?

You CANNOT change individual gears on the stock trans, then only option with the stocker is a close-ratio gearset.
when boosted, longer gears are better.
there are couple options available for you if you want a different gear setup. Changing gears would be one of the more expensive ones, but consider Z32,Z33 trannies and even the truck (pathfinder IIRC) has same casing as Z32(4 banger) and Z33(v6) and come with different gear ratios than their Z counterparts. Adapting one to work with KA/SR takes either some modding up or calling up mazworx to make you the kit (if not already available).
Personally, for the SR I went with Z32 trans. KA/SR trannies don't hold up too well and most people with some real power end up swapping in a couple in a course of a season. So between, swapping KA/SR every few events, rebuilding one with gear set, or getting Z32 and now worrying about any of it, my choice was pretty easy.
Hope this helps
