View Full Version : AWD system Requires same diameter... but staggered rim setup :D
that's right... I'm gonna be trying to run a staggered width setup on my daily subaru... been told it's not a good idea, but if done correctly won't cause any problems... if any of you know me, you know I'm one to push the envelope. Anyways, looking like I'm gonna be running 18x8 +30 18x9+30 after adapters. I need to get VERY close, as close as possible to actual measured diameter. According to a tire calculator I used, the difference in diameter between a 215 40 and 225 40 on the SAME width wheel is like 6mm difference. Problem is I can't find a calculator for running the staggered width. IE, would a 215 40 on the 8 and 225 40 on the 9 be within a millimeter or two, would a 235 40 on the 9 be better.... any of you guys who work at tire shops or any of the advertisers that sell tires that can chime in please do so.
It would appear a 215 40 on an 8 inch wheel is 24.77 inches in diameter and a 245 35 on a 9 inch wheel is 24.75 inches in diameter... that might be my magic number....

I know you need the same tire width and size. Also the same Wheel diameter and width. It's the Traction the Circumference of the tire and the weight(total and placement) that make the difference in load.
Sure you may get away with it. But don't come crying when your center diff eats shit in 6 months.
damn don't go telling me stuff like this... I never thought of the weight aspect.... hmmmm
PS... why was this moved to offtopic, i'm looking for technical advice on tire selection????

It's not a Z or S chasis...
This is why you can void your GTR warranty with aftermarket wheels.
yeah.... I wish I had a better understanding of the inner workings of the awd systems on these cars... my option for the staggered look would appear to be getting different offsets in the same width wheel... but i want these SOOO bad

why not just go bad ass wheels/offset all the way around.
ugh dook....cmon man.....please don't do it.
is that an opinionated response or something you know technically from working for SOA dealership?

I currently am... work meister S2Rs... Looking to change it up... I'm also looking at running Advan RS same sizing all around as well... haven't really made up my mind yet. i've always had a soft spot for vs-xx though... changing lips or barrel to achieve same sizing is also an option since the vs are 3 peice...

awd staggered? nah.......... dont do it. not worth it imo.
We've (MHT) put staggered setups on AWD cars often. Mostly Porsches.
You are fine as long as the OD is within about 2mm of each other.
A lot of times, the OD will be off by that much just by tire wear, as it was with my Evo.
Just use the miata tire calculator and find two staggered tire sizes that are really close to each other, and you should be good.

Aren't Porsches Mismatched from the factory though?
911's are, Cayennes are not.
We've done both.
We've also done some Audi Quattros and a lot of Bentleys, which are AWD, but come factory without staggered wheels.

i'm on an Acura CL forum.
they love staggered wheels. i tried to explain to them why they're retarded but they won't have any of it.

Do it. I love my RS.
17x9.5 +25 all around.
Or, why dont you just do staggered offsets? Like 18x9 +40 and 18x9 +30?
It would get you a similar look and still maintain your overall tire circumference.

yes. fat wheels in back. it blows my mind how these guys are. i mean, first they treat their honda commuter cars like they're fucking race cars. these cars have just enough horsepower to get out of their own way (200), but they handle like total shit. then, they do shit like staggered wheels and youtube "drift" videos.
why are people so retarded

thanks Yuri... as I put above, the difference in between the 215 40 and 245 35 is 24.77 inches to 24.75 inches... well within 2mm, so I guess staggering is still an option for me.

I'm trying to avoid having to buy brand new, but if I can find a great condition used setup with staggered offset but same width, that is definately a consideration

it's pretty common in the Volkswagen forums to see cars with RWD staggered setups as well... it's just like stretching tires, it's all about preference.

That's why I could never mod a FWD or AWD car, wheel fitment would drive me crazy haha. With RWD it's natural, smaller offset and/or bigger wheel in rear and done.

you could run the same widths with a lower offset out back like the masquerade wrx. 9.5+9F 9.5+6R

its something i know from working at a dealership.
unless you have the 1500+ to shell out for a new center diff, i wouldnt chance it. its not worth it.

Do it do it.
I have no experience with what you want to do.
But however I support my buddy no matter how stupid of an idea it is.
I'm like the devil on his shoulder.
Not that it's a stupid idea, just out of the norm. Try it and see what happens.

I for one hate staggered wheels, pita to rotate, different sized tires, blah blah blah. Get 4 of the same size wheels and tires in some nice offsets and be done with it.

don't subarus suffer from understeer? shouldn't you want to do a reverse stagger hahaha

That's funny, because many Evo owners space out the front wheels or whatever to fight understeer.
Lulz....
Understeer is even worse on scoobies.

I was going to say that. I remember seeing a time-attack Evo a few years back that was running a 1/2" wider wheels up front. It obviously wasnt for looks, but they apparantly like the way it handled with a reverse-stagger.
I'm running my S2Rs for now anyways... thanks for the suggestions anyways. I hate total flakes who say for weeks they want the wheels and when it comes time to pay the piper they are nowhere to be found... fuckin local bumpkins.
