KA24E rebuild

I have a KA24E in my 89 240 right now with about 200k + miles on it, and i know the dude i bought it from ROMPED on it so hard, so it threw a rod and probably put a hole in the block, would i be best just to buy a whole new other SOHC, or should i just try to rebuild this engine to get it to run again?..

im on $400 budget

well, im not all that experienced yet, just picked up this 240 and got to prove to my dad i can get it to run, so im gonna drop in a SOHC then.. later down the road go sr, once im all settled in

REBUILD!!!! Why buy another ka with high mileage and fuck it up again.... do it right and do it once or do keep doing it over and spend more money. And SOHCs are not bad motors, between that and a DOHC your looking at a max of 30 hp difference on the same high horsepower turbo setup. 30 hp is and isn't a lot, because a SOHC can easily get you into the 300s if you choose to turbo it.

A DOHC swap into a SOHC motor is not as easy as some think and requires a lot of parts which end up costing quite some money. Plus parts for it are cheaper, its already top feed, lighter then then DOHC and smaller.

You can even rebuild it with some goodies and have it turbo ready if you choose to go that route.

alright then! rebuild it is! is there any write-ups on things to do? haha i know mostly on what to do, pretty much just re-new everything in the engine right? but any DIY's? you think it will cost around $400 to rebuild a motor and get it runnin?

^^ it just depends on how far u want to go with the rebuild... most of the $400 would probably go to covering the machine work... (resurfacing, boring, valve job) and u would still need to get all ur parts. so do some research. go to your local machine shop and get a quote. and then figure out how far u want to go with your rebuild.

just buy another SOHC Longblock, get it running, and when you have the funds build the blown block on the side.

alright, well my grandpa gets discounts at the machine shop so i bet that will help alot, how much do SOHC longblocks usually go for average price? damn i wish there was a DIY or write up on rebuilding an engine.. haha i have no idea what the prices are like

If you bring your motor to a machine shop and have most the work done it will be over $400

gasket kits are right around $130ish for the ka24de
bearings up to $100
Then you need:
Oil pump
Water pump
timing components?
Various other things like RTV.......

The motor I am workign one right now will have just under $1200 into it, everything is rebuilt, new everything and High comp. pistons.

Out there you should have no problems with finding a cheap KA. when you get it or look at one, take off the oil pan and valve cover and make sure nothing it funky.
