View Full Version : Considered Stretched?

Would 225/45/17 be considered "stretched" on 17x9 wheels?

I DO NOT WANT STRETCHED TIRES. The last thing I need is to curb my wheels. That's why I'm asking how those tires would fit the wheels.

well... it really depends on tire brand. heres a pic of my 225/45/17 on a 9"... but if I were to slap on some Federal 595's, I can probably bet it would look more squared out than stretched.

Kumho MX is a bit wider than the "normal" width of 225 too.

Why do you care if it would be considered "stretched"? Run whatever tires work for you. Who the fuck cares what anyone else thinks. In my opinion any tire width smaller than what the manufacturer reccomends for your wheel size is "stretched". It's just not "JDM tyte" stretched.

The point is, I don't want the stretched look. Instead, I'd prefer the tires to sit a little over the lip of the wheel, in case I curb.

Then don't curb your wheels?

I mean, honestly, unless you seriously suck at driving on the street, and is unable to react in such a manner when your eyes spot a curb, and your brain goes "oh look, a curb, I will now move the hands to turn the steering wheel to avoid the curb", then I guess you would need all the protection on the rims as you can get. Like getting 255/60/17 so the only thing that will hit the curb is your tire.

Adrian, I'm a bit concerned about the exposure of the lip, but thanks for the picture reference.

I'm not the only one who drives my car, so I have to take preemptive measures to avoid problems in the future.

Take your condescending attitude elsewhere...nevermind, this is the internet.

I suggest you teach the other drivers how to drive.

-If you can't drive a car around without curbing the rims I think you should practice your driving in a closed off area before you are allowed to drive in public.
-If somebody is just too dumb and think you have to park as close to the curb as physically possible, do not buy wheels that you are worried about curbing.

Just order 2 sets of some weak ass wheel that looks decent and comes in good sizing. It's your money going down the drain though, I'm sure you're going to do it your way no matter what. These are just some of my usual asshole type suggestions. Don't take them personally or offensively, this is just the way I look at things.

Good luck....

Or just make sure that if the person curbed your shit and fucks up your rims, that they pay for new replacement ones.

That will get the message across to not drive like a complete douchehole.

to answer your question, 225 is somewhat stretched on 17x9.

you do know, however, that simply wanting a tire that doesnt "look stretched" is only one factor you have to consider. what's this going on? a 240? front? rear? offset of wheels? you might have clearance issues with a larger tire setup.

tho i guess that doesnt really matter. apparently you only care about curbing your wheels.

why dont you just get 235's then... why not go wider? is there any reason why it HAS to be 225?

Gnnr
02-28-2008, 02:52 PM
Technically...yes according to google since its under 9", if by stretch you mean narrower than the wheel....but even then, some wheels aren't exactly 9" either...

I'm just wondering, I'm well aware that 235 will be okay.

Just get the 235.

You shouldn't be worrying about how small to go, it should be how big.

And if you really don't like the stretched look AT ALL, you need a 255+.

you'll curb your wheels anyway with a "square" tire, the tire bends and your rim lip hits the curb. you can remedy this by not driving around on the side of the road

This is what scares me.

Someone that actually is expecting the rims/tires to hit a curb, before they even have the tires/rims on the car.

That's scary.

if ur thinking federal 225/40 on a 9in it will not stretch, if it does it will be so minor itll look like a bulge

its called 97.328% of women drivers. Its sad but true, and I understand his dilemma. Just like the fact that I put on my front aero bumper (type x whatever..), I have this intuition that the first time my girlfriend drives my car she will manage to run it straight into a curb while parking. No offense to the women on this board, you ladies are the exception.

ive driven around on 18x9 with 225's for 4 years now (50k miles) and have never curbed my rims.

if youre worried about it... caddy cock those turns!!!!!!!

bigOdom1
02-28-2008, 03:56 PM
no its still very much on topic. a tire is not going to save the wheel from getting a curb mark on it unless you drive a truck or suv. if you cant keep the car on the part of the road its supposed to be on then you should not be driving at all. if you cant not scrape your bumper then raise your car or drive slow.

Chmercer once said: Only a moron would drive around running their car into stuff.

If you're really worried about curbing your wheels, because someone sucks cock at driving, just keep the stock ones on.

I've seen 245/40/17 Kumho MX on a 9" and you can curb those.

Bubble tires are ugly.

If you're really worried about curbing your wheels, just park far from the curb.

A ticket for parking too far away is cheaper than wheel repair (dismount, repair, remount etc.)

don't any of you guys have to park next to 6"+ high curbs? i curbed the shit out of my wheels because it was hard as hell to see out of my car. that's how i always thought of curbing wheels. if you fall off the road, you just fail at life.

bigOdom1
02-28-2008, 04:56 PM
i park by curbs on purpose so that only one side can get dinged by the dumbass that throws his door at my car when parking next to me. as stated if you are that worried then you should keep stock wheels or sleeper hub caps

http://www.chapelsteel.com/millimeters-inches.html
225mm = 8.85825"
Less than square, so technically "stretched"
235mm = 9.25195"
About a quarter inch over square, but not quite enough for a huge "bulge," so if you're not looking to stretch, go with 235.
And since this thread became less about tires and more about curbing wheels, I will close it now.
