I’m looking to purchase an aftermarket LSD. The car will be tracked, driven on the street, and drifted.
Besides changing the fluid, is there any other maintenance needed?
How much life can I get out of the LSD before any kind of overhaul or rebuild is needed?
I’m looking at KAAZ, Tomei, and Nismo units for my factory VSLD.
For those with experience, should I be looking at a 1.5 or 2 way?
Any insight, opinions, or blatant speculation is welcome.
Thanks

if this is going to be driven on the streets as well, i would get the 1.5 for streetability. 2 way isnt bad for DD but if you get a 1.5 you avoid lock when slowing down on tight turns.
i would get either kaaz or nimso 1.5. tomei is good but more nosier then the rest.
rebuilt isnt necessary for another 3 + year after you have bought it. not unless you whomp on it all the time on the track it should be fine.

Yes you can drift with a 1.5... it's pretty popular...
1.5 or 2 way doesnt matter in DD, imo.
ive never driven a 1.5 way, but i'd assume you'd get almost the same tire wear and i bet you'll still get tire chirping.
just clutch in when you do tight u turns or turn in the parking lot and you'll be fine.
clutch lsds dont lock when you're not in a gear.
from my experience, i like the aggressiveness of a 2 way. tire wear isn't too noticeable since you're probably going to be drifting.
i had no problems gripping with a kaaz 2 way either. plus rain isn't bad.
either way, you wont go wrong with a 1.5 or 2.0, you'll love it.

what's the most cost effective lsd? Kaaz, tomei, nismo1.5 is around 700, cusco is just too expensive with 1000. which lsd is better/cost effective?

Honestly, if you have to ask, then you probably won't notice any difference between any of those.
So my honest answer to you is, just get whichever one you can find for the lowest price.
Seriously.

Its as simple as this gets...for Daily Driving purposes, there is no significant difference between 1.5 and 2 way. They pretty much react the same way no matter what anyone says (for street operation). If you really pay attention to detail everything you make that "Small turn" then you will notice a slight difference in reaction compared to a 1.5 way vs. a 2way. They will all chatter, clunck , pop, etc whether it is a 1.5 or 2 way CLUTCH type LSD.
If your using the car for tight cornering (like auto cross where there are lot of low gear driving) during competition driving the 1.5 way is probably the best unit for you, however some drivers like 2 way units because it allows the rear-end to kick out a lot easier allowing drivers to maneuver the car differently.
The 2 way is best for drifting and aggressive styled road racing. You just have to learn how to drive the car a little different. Shit my GF uses drives her 240 with a 2way and doesn't complain one bit.
On overhaul and upkeep of the units, just make sure you have proper oil changes and do them on a timely matter (like every 5k). If you use the car for more of a "competition" purpose, your diff oil changes should take place after every other event.
I've been running/selling KAAZ LSD's for years now, can't beat the prices for quality units and they are the only company I can call for real time technical advice and or repairs!
Good luck!

i had a kaaz 2 way and drifted on it regularly. after 3 years it finally needs a rebuild. i just got a ats 1.5 way, and the lockup isn't as aggressive, but i like it more (its louder than the kaaz tho).

A 1.5 way diff would be best for the "all purpose" useage you are describing. Most road racers and autocross guys that I have heard of use a 1.5 way diff. A 2 way diff will lock more aggressively on decel and corner entry which can cause the rear end to kick out, which is why the 2 way is so popular for drifting. Of course you can drive around that and some drivers even prefer it. Really it all depends on your driving style and the PRIMARY purpose of your car. If you want to use it for PRIMARILY drift events with some OCCASIONAL track days then a 2 way would probably be better and vice-versa.
