I see just as many with the VG around here as I do with the CA.
Not to say I see a LOT of either, just the ones I do see are more often than not the ones with the V6 in them.

^^ Exactly^^ Most older nissans were very prone to rust and to be quite honest on the less expensive models, more cheaply built IMO. My buddy has an S12 turbo model,. He used to Love it till he "finished" his car..i.e. got it running again...and then i spanked him on the highway with a stock KA24DE.

I love the layout and look of the car and the 1980'sness ( my decade :) ) But if you are looking for reliable Hp you might be looking to do one of the myriads of Nissan motor swaps out there :) Cool car though and good luck with your choice.

my buddy had the vg in his s12 and i have to say we had a TON of fun, being a small car the vg is a torque monster in that chassis. Very fun to toss around. i would like to pick one up, just having to find a clean example like that one.

FYI, S12s have thicker sheet metal than S13s. That's why S12s weigh more, but are also less prone to rust.

Compare an average S12 to an average S13. The S12 will have less rust even though it's older.

Old school Datsun guys love using the 200sx setup for their 510's. Engine crossmember, front lower ca's, front struts. I spoke to a guy that said everything swapped over lowering the front 2" with the VG setup. I miss my 510

I guess I was thinking more along the lines of my 79' Datsun 280ZX and my buddy's S12 200SX...Both had major rust issues and neither one saw northern roads. I mean, even thicker sheet metal would still yield surface rust, it would just take longer for the rust to work it's way through. From some research on the older Z's and early Nissan models I had done when i had the 280ZX ( i was 17 at the time :) )everyone complained about random surface rust and bubbling paint issues.

But back to the 200SX/S12 Love em'!! I love the AE86 ness of them :). 1980's were the birth period of only a select few decently styled cars, and this was one.

I had strut bars. Down Pipes, Cat backs, Sway Bars, Rear ADJUSTABLE LCA's, rear coils (those were easy). Sparco Bottom mount seat brackets.

I was the first to put an RB in one, and first to put a VG30DE in one. The hatch is a heavy pig, the coupe is white lightning.

I didn't mean to offend anyone. I know that there are a couple S12 guys (I think draconis) that have some dime, and actually did nice stuff to their cars. Other wise the BS of dirty mig welded AFM adapters, AFC install write ups, and spray painted strut tower bars had me running for the hills.

All you have to do is feel the thickness of an S13 fender and then go feel one on an S12. It's not rocket science. Don't speculate if you don't know.

Everything rusts but the thicker the metal the harder it is to rust through. On average S12 frames are better than S13 in terms of longevity.

Back to the original point, I'm a previous S12 owner as well. Very nice car back in its days. Too bad they're all wrecked, junked, or messed up by kids.

johngriff
02-24-2008, 02:54 PM
Yeah, I am going to agree on the rust thing.

I've torn apart and rebuilt about 10 s12's, and I have seen COUNTLESS S13's inside and out. The S12's almost DONT RUST. The only ones I have ever seen rust is the ca18et turbo models on the frame rail(exhaust side), but the damage was far less than the average S13 Drivers side frame rust.

ANY car can be cool. The thing is do you have the time, dedication, and money (or fabrication skill) to make it cool? With an s-12 almost NOTHING is off the shelf, YOU have to MAKE it or modify it to fit. I think an s-12 would be a fun project, and a very rewarding one if you do it right.

Don't forget people in Japan who got upset over the US STi.

I don't know about that, I'd rather have the later EJ207 engines they got- twinscroll turbo, high revs (8k stock), AVCS, and forged pistons. Subaru follows the "give Americans less technology and more displacement" mantra almost as much as other manufacturers, but everyone was so geeked to finally get an STi here that they didn't really notice.

Yeah i suppose i was speaking from experience with only a few, either junkyard cars (which would be rusty from sitting), and my friend's S12 (which may have just been a crappy one). And my friend did have a CA18 model. But still, i know when to back down and let the people who obviously know more step up :) So....I'm sure the people that have owned them would know much more than I :)

If you come across another V6 at the junkyard, grab the intake manifold setup- Datsun guys will jump on those because the inlet comes out the side, where the Z comes out the back and requires firewall mods for install into a 510...
That VG30DE swap was awe-inspiring- how did it handle with all that extra weight out front?

johngriff
02-25-2008, 01:26 PM
Weighed the same, no difference. Used the same Single cam trans.

Yeah, I know the rear LCA's are revolutionary. But the price (about $1100) was just too far out of reach for those dreamers.

They are basically a modified version of the R31house adjustable lca, which WILL work, but the fit is a little weird, basically you have to move the rear bracket on the subframe (cut and weld).

After that I just did allot of slotting and welding to correct camber/toe.

Oh and luke, I have to disagree with you on the S12<AE86.

SR/RB/VG is bolt in, and the MKII (84.5+) is IRS, not solid axle. And I HATE HATE HATE Solid axle.

Now compared to the S13 which is true multi-link IRS, is shiet.

I'm loving my S12 so far. I had an SR20DET sitting in my garage I was going to use for my widebody S13 but decided I want to go big displacement N/A for my track car, I think it's going to work out nicely in the S12.

This car is killing me on the details. I'm trying to keep it OEM but a lot of the interior pieces are falling apart. I was able to order a full new set of panels for a steal from a site called OEM surplus.

I spent $200.00 on rubber seals last weekend and I'm still not sure what I'm going to do about the shitty aftermarket sunroof thats in the car.

don't get me started on the seats. It would be easy if I was willing to swap out the old-school ness. I'd just put in S15 seats like I did in my S13. I have been looking all over at junkyards for decent ones but have only found 2 S12's at all.

Man, sometimes people from SoCal sound like some sort of high school movie. I could afford a G35 if I wanted one, I'd rather drive something "I" like and be PROUD of it than have something nice (read *plain**normal**boring*) to live up to someone else's expectations.

If I move out to SoCal (Might take an electronics job in the valley in a year or two) The S12 is the only one of my cars I'm taking (probably buy some sort of newer car for a DD). I'm pretty sure an 84 is just about CARB exempt, right?

I don't understand how anyone can hate on the Vg30e.... It is capable of 500 hp on the stock bottom end, lighter than the KA(not saying much), a torque monster, parts are quite cheap, it is of the same construction as the turbocharged model(besides a modified compression ratio) and it retains a very simple design.

Had to say something..

I am currently rebuilding one and plan to swap it into my s14 chassis.
