View Full Version : car intermittently won't start - fuel pump going bad?

ok, heres the deal:

I filled up at a shady gas station about two weeks ago. Right after I fueled up, I got on the highway, merged into traffic and was cruising at about 80MPH when I felt a hesitation. It felt as if the car was running out of fuel, the more i pushed on the throttle the more power the engine lost. After a minute it settled and the problem went away.. I figured there might have been some sediment that I pumped into the tank from the seedy gas station which was clogging the fuel filter and figured I would replace it the next day.

I go out to my car the next morning and it won't start. The engine turns over and over but it just won't crank. I let it sit for a few hours and came back to try it again. I turn the key and immediately it starts (quicker than normal, as if fuel was already in the cylinder)...

So i drive it to the auto parts store and pick up a z32 fuel filter. I try to start the car after I walk out of the store, no luck. Engine turns over and over, and I notice a faint smell of fuel. So i decided to change the filter right there in the parking lot. Swap the filter out and replace the lines with new ones, get in the car and it starts right up.. So I figure the reason why it wasn't starting was a clogged fuel filter. case closed.

As I'm driving the car later that day, I notice that the fuel pump is whining louder that it usually does and my idle is up around 1200RPM (without the A/C on) Try to start the car again later in the day and it won't start again. Let it sit for a few hours and try it again, this time i have to push the throttle so that the engine doesn't die.. but it eventually evens out and idles.

Went to school tonight, parked the car, came out after class and it wont start again but smells like fuel though.
So, does this sound like a fuel problem I'm having? Do fuel pumps just stop working or do they work intermittently until they eventually die? The fuel pump fuse is fine.

any ideas/insight?

what motor/chasis? its weird, because it sounds like a fuel problem and a delivery problem, but at the same time it sounds electrical. Definitely check the fuel pump and it it checks out then check your ignition system, a short in the ignition system will cause similar symptoms.
Here is a link to a site with all of the FSM manuals for the different 240 motors both JDM and USDM you should be able to find a trouble shooting guide in the 1 for your motor : http://www.240edge.com/manuals/s14-sr20det.html

thanks for the quick reply.

I forgot to mention its a 1991 240sx KA24DE.

I have a hard copy of the FSM, so i guess i'll have to go through the motions and diagnose it, I was just wondering if anyone here has experienced a similar problem/bad fuel pump.

how long mileage wise have you had the fuel pump. Walbro or stock?

stock, 170,000 miles.
I realize that the pump should be replaced anyway at this mileage, just wondering if that is the actual problem or not.

judging by the mileage you are correct. I changed my stock one by 140k. You stock fuel pump is probably on its way out. Get an OEM one instead of an autozone or kragen one. Ive had my troubles with those.

I have also been having this problem.... im thinking of changing the fuel filter and the fuel pump but if that is not the problem i dont want to spend money that i do not have.

my car stoped working this morning and havent started since
1990 ka24e 187k miles, stock fuel pump, and i have a z32 fuel filter but i put in it like 5-6 months ago

yeah i never took the time to get my ka running when i got my car so i dont know much about them.

i'm thinking its a fuel delivery problem. the only thing that makes me second guess that is the smell of fuel after i let the engine turn over a few times, and the fact that it starts up immediately after i let it sit for a while, as if fuel is already in the cylinders... thoughts?

UPDATE:

so the car has been starting up relatively fine since i made my last post, sometimes i have to give it a little gas to get it to idle. another weird thing its been doing is, almost every time i step on the brake the radio turns off then on again, and the lights dim for a second... bad ground somewhere?

SO...

last night i'm coasting to a stop light and i see the revs drop way down and the engine about to die out, i try to save it with a shot of throttle, but it dies out and everything turns off. So i get out of the car, pop the hood and find the battery has become disconnected, I reconnect it and it won't start. I push it into a gas station WAYYYY down the road and try to start it again.

When i turn the key, the engine cranks over and it starts to idle high, around 1500rpm, if i touch the throttle, it dies immediately. If i don't touch the throttle, it slowly dies out a few seconds later... So i left the car at the gas station over night, and i'm about to go try and start it now...

any help?

Check your fuses. You prolly popped your engine control circuit when you reconnected the battery. IAC or EGR might be stuck open or something silly like that. As far as the fuel pump issue, it sounds like you might have gotten some bad gas (ie water in gas). Once you get it running again, toos in some "dry gas" available at any auto parts store. I believe its straight ethanol, but dont quote me on that.

If you start having problems right after you fill up, dont be so quick to blame the fuel pump or electrical system. Cause and Effect people.

^Thanks for the heads up man...

I made some time to check out the car properly today.

The fuel pump is officially dead.

I suspected the fuel pump all along... today i ran the fuel line before the fuel filter to a bucket and no fuel was being delivered... The car was starting consistently for the past week...I've never had an experience with a fuel pump going bad before, but I guess sometimes they die gradually...

I just ordered a Walbro to replace it.

As for the problem with the radio resetting and lights dimming when the brakes are applied... I found one of the alternator bolts had backed itself out 3 inches... within mm's of hitting the clutch fan. I think this bolt acts as a ground, so i tightened it up and i'll find out if that was the problem when the fuel pump gets here.
