...but what the fuck. leonardo dicaprio? "new manhattan"? what the fuck?
now, leo's actually a pretty good actor. rent the departed or the beach. but... i don't know how i feel about blonde kaneda.

ahhhh it'll be sick. who am i kidding.

What a strange day for Warner Bros. First, rumors explode today that they’re giving the heave-ho (http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/02/20/spike-jonzes-where-the-wild-things-are-to-be-entirely-reshot/) to Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are, and now word arrives that they’ve greenlit two ambitious live-action films based on the landmark Japanese manga and anime Akira, with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way producing. Mere rumor is he may star as the lead character, Kaneda, in the franchise, which will be set in New Manhattan, “a new metropolis rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years earlier.” The first film is being fast tracked for summer 2009.
After months of speculation, young Irish director Ruairi Robinson (pronounced Raw-Ree) will direct. We’ve included two of his rather violent, trippy, head-shot lovin’ short films, Fifty Percent Grey and The Silent City, below, so as for you to get acquainted. Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117981194.html?categoryid=13&cs=1) reports that the filmmakers pitched the flicks as “Blade Runner meets City of God,” which is a modestly fitting description for the 1988 film, a kinetic, dystopian vision where young motorcycle gangs roam Neo-Tokyo (rather than New Manhattan) post-nuclear war and all hell breaks loose when one is exposed to a government experiment, thus gaining menacing powers.
Update: AICN (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/35680) reports that Joseph Gordon Levitt has been cast in the role Tetsuo, the motorcycle gang member who develops aforementioned menacing psychokinetic powers. They also report as if Leonardo DiCaprio is definitely a lock for the lead character of Kaneda.
The films will be adapted from creator Katsuhiro Otomo’s six volume manga, which provides far more storyline, characters and franchise potential than the classic anime adaptation alone. This news has been a long time coming, so it’s cool to see how inspired and charged-up it is, especially with Robinson’s involvement. I’m not too big on remaking old visions of the world’s future, but it’s Akira, so hey, it’s an exception. View his short films after the jump.

I hope it's good. It's still not original, but it could make for a good series of movies.

PS, they do have a thing called hair dye.

Could be a great film but changing bits from the original story leaves a bad taste on my mouth. Where's James Cameron when you need him?

I wonder if they're going to make the film as violent as the anime. The anime was great.

i just have a feeling theyre going to have a hard time capturing the intensity of some of the scenes in a live action film

i also don't think leonardo can quite play kaneda's personality

but joseph might be alright as tetsuo with a lot of work...

Hmm.. aside from that beating of Tetsuo's girlfriend, I don't see that hasn't been shown in film already. Now a live version of Ninja Scroll on the other hand...

I think CGI and moviemaking techniques already exist to do it justice. Keep the OG soundtrack though.

Yeah, this one I find hard to swallow.

but joseph might be alright as tetsuo with a lot of work...

Agree.

there isn't too much real violence in akira, but there is a nice big chunk of "fucked up shit". like when tetsuo loses his shit, falls through the sidewalk, and when he lands like ten dudes' worth of intestines fall out of him.

but these movies... aren't going to remake the anime. they're going to cover the full manga. if you've ever seen those huge books sitting on the shelf at borders or what have you, you know there's a LOT more story there than the anime covered. i've got the first four volumes, it's easily the best graphic series i've ever read, and i'm a man with a comic book boner.

akira is the shit, i remember i watched it when i was in the 1st grade. watched it again in the later years, and finally understood the storyline. i still haven't finished the graphic novels, it's collecting dust in storage. i hope they don't fuck this movie up.

i'd like to see the scene where one of the clowns gets run over by the bike

or how about when tetsuo flys out of the building like 100 stories high

the bridge collapsing etc lots of hard scenes to conquer in that movie
