Red Line Tranny Fluid

OK I have a 3 gear slight grind and I have heard that putting in Red line might help. I know its good but is it that good?? I also heard if you do that along with a short shifter it also might work. Dose anyone on here have first hand experiance with this problem and what can fix besides "the synchros are going out" or "just buy a new tranny"?? I know that will be the case if it doesnt work but just trying a few things out before I have to go that route.

MT-90 is the shit.

It defiantly will make the trans shift smoother. Won't necessarily fix your problem, but worth trying imo.

i completely agree with the above statement. MT90 is awesome. it's ~8or9 dorra a quart and you only need 3 bottles (won't use the third one completely). i wouldn't go changing your shifter and other stuff randomly. do one thing at a time. no sense in putting all the effort into installing a new shifter if you're either going to pull the tranny and rebuild or get a new one.

A little off-topic, but I've got Royal Purple 75w90 in my tranny, ~2.75 quarts, and it still grinds. On the bottle it says it's GL-4 and GL-5 compatible; is that good enough, or do I need a straight GL-4 like Redline MT90?

I've used both, MT-90 and Royal Purple. Both are good gear oils, sounds like a bad tranny.

I use Redline 75-90 and love it (except for the price). It sounds like your fluid might be low too. Sounds dumb but my tranny grinded a little bit, I checked the fluid, topped it off and it shifts nice now.

Redline like some above have suggested. I switched to Amsoil and its much better imo. If problems persist I would lean towards the tranny starting to go. I wouldn't waste $$ on the short shifter in trying to alleviate the problem, unless you just really want one.

I use Redline 75-90 and love it (except for the price). It sounds like your fluid might be low too. Sounds dumb but my tranny grinded a little bit, I checked the fluid, topped it off and it shifts nice now.


I got 2 bottles of mt 90 and 4 bottles of 75-90 and I got 2 trannys that need fluid. stupid question but can you mix??

the b&m for our cars is awesome. it feels so precise. the only problem i have is tht my throw out bearing acts funny sometimes, and when i say that i mean totally sporadically so i will be buy a new clutch soon

Well if you think about it, the price of the MT-90, $30-$35 shipped for 3 quarts, and the cost of a decent short shifter ($150.00), you might as well invest that money in getting a replacement tranny.

The MT-90 is a good oil, ran it in my 91', but it didn't alleviate the grinding. I was experiencing grinding at a stand still going into first. And the short shifter made it worse, really if you compare short shifters, they make your shifting harder and grinding in a bad tranny more likely. Mainly because they eliminate the slop in the shifting and allow for near zero shift error or out of sync gear meshing. Really all they do is make getting from 1 gear to the next faster, not easier. I guarantee you swap in a B&M shifter and you will grind in almost every gear for about a week from not being used to the strength and precision needed in getting it to move.

The MT-90 and equivalents do help lubricate the internals better and ease operation of the tranny mainly in high RPM situations and a bit in daily driving. But really only on a good working tranny. They can't magically repair your worn out synchros.

If you want ease of shifting from gear to gear, just stick with OEM. If you're having grinding from gear to gear, no fluid will eliminate this problem. You WILL need a better tranny.

So save your money, top off the fluid in the tranny with some Valvoline 75-90W, and start looking for a decent used tranny, you should be able to find one for about 150-200. And try to see if you can test shift it BEFORE the guy pulls it. You never what your buying from someone's garage floor. Hope this helps.

Well I already have the oil and auctually dont want a short shifter but If I could have found a cheap used one I would have tried it. Its not shifting gear to gear its just in 3rd so I will try to top it off, cause Im an dumbass and havent done that yet. and I definitely agree about the tranny and testing it before. I thought it was good enough just going through the gears and a while back and when I put the tranny in my old s13 and took off it would even go into second lolll. so others heed the warning :)
