This is what happened. I got the car from the guy I'm buying it from but he doesn't give me the paper work or plates yet. I parked on the side of the rode the other day and came back to my car only to find a ticket for the car not being registered and no plates. No paper work has been turned into the DMV yet.

Do I have to pay or the guy? Or will the fines carry over when the title is transfered?

I live in cali by the way...

Did the cop put in the VIN number for the ticket. I got a ticket for no licence plate but the cop never used the VIN to identify the car. So you can guess what I did

Why didn't the guy give you the papers or the plates yet? Was the car in your possession?

This is a damn good question. I started to say that it would be the moral thing to do to keep from a giant argument with the guy you bought it from, would be for you to pay it. But...What is the reason for him not giving you the papers or the plates yet? That seems like it would be an big thing to me. I really can't think of a reason for him not to give you the papers. Don't you have to get the plate yourself at the local DMV?

I think I'd call up the local POLICE DEPT and ask them. Don't ask the guy you bought it from though because you know what he's going to say. Anyway call up the police dept and find out from them. Then if they say that he pays it then you can go tell the guy you bought it from, and he'll have to bite the bullet and deal with the ticket.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Well, I still haven't acted on this yet. I was supposed to have the work taken care of by today(10/27), but when I wen to the police station yesterday, they didn't know jack and gave me the number to the Citation Processing Center but i called and one answered. So I'm gonna call tomorrow and see if it's too late to get an extension. I think if i got the car squared away before than the deadline on the ticket than everything would be okay but it's a little late for that now. I hope everything goes well.

I should have the papers in a few days. The reason why the guy didn't give me the papers was because he wasn't sure what he had to do and did some things wrong. I just hope i don't have to end up spening money for his mistake.

Since it was his mistake I would tell him to pay it. There was nothing that you could have done to prevent it so it was his fault. That's the way I would look at it.
