OK, here's the deal. My current T25 is working just fine. The main reason I'm considering upgrading (not until next summer) is that my gaskets would like to be replaced, and I want to get some more power...but not a ton (maybe ~250-270 at the wheels is all...don't want to switch MAFS/injectors/ECU yet). So I was thinking that I could get an HPI or KMD manifold and a new turbo along with some gaskets and go to town. Now, some of you may say: "Why not go big and get the Enjuku kit?" Well, to that I answer: "I don't want to wait for boost to hit at 4 grand." I like the way my turbo spools right now. Very torquey. I'd like to keep *most* of that in tact. I realize I can't have everything though.

So given my goals, give me your thoughts. Is it really worth it to spend a LARGE chunk of money on an HKS GT series turbo? Or should I simply get an S14 or S15 turbo and bolt that in? What about a Big28?

Please give your thougts and opinions. And if you can give me a GOOD reason to switch to a T3/T4 housing, feel free...but remember my feelings about spool-up.

thanks.

Well.. if you want serious power... get a t3/4 and nitrous. Not much, 20-35hp. Rig it to a full throttle switch, and boom, instant spool up.
If not, you'll be looking at like $1500-2000 for another small (t28) turbo and manifold.
I really don't know about SR motors, or pricing, or anything... but I know about turbos. I'm assuming that you have an s13 motor. You could get a stock s14 or s15 manifold and turbo. As opposed to a $$$ aftermarket manifold.
Just random thoughts I figured I'd let out.

Boooh!

Thanks for replying, but c'mon. j/k. I respect the thoughts, but that didn't really help. First off, I'm NOT looking for big power. I want 250-270 at the wheels and I want it tractable. I would rather stick to a T2 frame with an internal gate just because of cost and simplicity issues. But if a T3/T4 would really be better, tell me about it. I might go that route down the road, but not for now. Not while I still have 370cc injectors and a stock MAFS and computer. I want to just do a basic turbo upgrade at the same time I get in there and change out all my gaskets. I figure if I'm gonna be in there anyway, I might as well spend some bucks and upgrade some shiz while I'm at it.

So:

T28 BB from S14/15?
GT series ($$$
Big28
16g
....

Any other ideas?

Boost controller (guage too)
Exhaust
Intake
FMIC
Ported head

That should get you about where you want to be. I've seen 240HP off a stock turbo SR without head work. It's maxing out the turbo, but it works.

Doesn't the S15 bb t28 come with a bit larger exhaust housing? you could easily see the numbers your looking for with the S15 turbo. and it would keep lag down. but it might run out of steam up top if your blowing a lot of boost. If only we had compressor maps...

That's funny I was thinking about doing the same thing before I bought that GT. Unfortunatly almost any turbo upgrade will require fuel and mafs upgrades also.
You COULD but an s15 or s14 turbo on but for the price you'd pay it wouldn't be worth it in the long run. If you really want to hold of on upgrading your fuel and mafs then I suggest buying the manifold then getting the greddy intake manifold. Then just replacing the gaskets on your t25. That was you'll be able to install the exhaust manny at the same time. Then with both upgrades you'll be set when you decide to bump up to a bigger turbo.

I considered getting the big t28 however I was told by a lot of people that it would require bigger injectors.

well, the only way i can see fuel being a problem is if i run a lot of boost. i should be able to keep the boost levels down, and still achieve the power i want with the slightly upgraded turbo. but then again, my T25 isn't blowing oil and it seems to be boosting very well, so maybe i'll just get the exhaust mani and some new gaskets and a nice boost controller. set it for .9 bar and be on my merry way. Oh, and probably get the Trust O2 housing while I'm at it.

OK, anyone else want to add anything?

What about rebuilding the T25 when I have it out? Is that tough? Do I just need some new seals and stuff? How long would that take?

I saw this elctric turbo on ebay you could use. You should get a like a T60 with the elctric turbo to help spool it at low rpms. damn yo! That would be sweet.

In any case I do like the idea of an rebuilt turbo. A touch more boost with some improved top end, but at the same time I know you. I think if you're dropping the coin to rebuild your turbo, you might as well upgrade with a used T28 and try to get something for your good T25 you're running now. Just upping the boost on the T25 will give some gains, but I think you're still losing out at the top and running into a wall for gains. Or go a new route and get just the gaskets and a new FMIC and up the boost a bit.

Or we can just straight up trade engines. Although you have a turbo, there's no replacement for dispalcement and my KA has an extra .4 liters. Come up next weekend and we'll get right on it.
