View Full Version : Gas sat in tank for 2 years...drain?

So my car is 99.9% complete (1991 s13 restoration/rebuild/upgrade). It's been a 2 year project that's almost back on the road.
While the car has been in my garage, the gas (premium, if that matters) has sat in the tank for about 2 years. The tank is about 1/3 full.
My questions are:
1) Should I just drop the tank and pour out the fuel into a container and blow out the lines to get rid of all the bad gas?
2) Is my gas okay to use?
3) Does old gas turn to gel?
4) Should I just run constant power to my old fuel pump and pull the line just before the filter and use that method to empty the tank?
I want to avoid gumming up my new pump, injectors, and FPR.
I'm in Las Vegas, with almost 0 humidity (don't know if that has an affect on the gas).
Any input is appreciated.

1) yes
2) probably not, why risk it?
3) most of the time
4) wouldn't recommend it. May gunk up the pump
I'll be in the same boat once I return to working on my pos S13 that's been sitting for about the same time. I plan to drop the tank and take it to a radiator place to have it flushed.

You can try adding a fuel stabilizer next time, so that it can sit for a long time.

^yup, wish I had thought about that in retrospect but never really meant for it to sit that long, just kinda happened...

Yeah...didn't plan on the car sitting for this long.
I was having a couple of issues with the car, so I started to repair them. In the middle of that, I decided to fully rebuild/modify the car.
Should be on the road in a matter of days.
I've been driving FF for so long (99 Civic si and 07 VW GTI) that I've almost forgotten what FR is like.

i did the constant 12v to the pump but i planned on changing everything afterwards... wouldnt suggest it without doing so. i changed the lines, pump, filter, etc.

gas starts turning to varnish after only a few months of sitting. personally, if it was any more than 4-5 months i'd dump it. if you add stabil or a product like it, its supposed to stay ok for up to 2 years. spend the extra few bucks and get a fresh tank of 91 or better.

Mine sat for longer than that, all you gotta do is take out the fuel pump assembly (dont drop tank, waste of time) and pump the fuel out with a cheap pump. blow out the lines and throw in a new ful filter and your good to go

yea 2 years i'd definitely drain it.
my car sat for a year with a 1/3 tank of gas. when i went to start it up, i mixed the fuel with fresh premium and some octane booster.

Drop and flush, no question. You may also find the injectors are seized if there was pressure on them for very long, the fuel will break down and clog them.

Sta-bil if you are paranoid
4 months isn't that much time.
Could pull the fuel pump fuse to clear fuel out of the lines and injectors I guess.

Add some fresh gas, four liters of Seafoam, start the car and see what happens.
