Ok so recently i've been having some Tranny problems on my '97. It started with a busted support that threw the whole tranny alignment off. So I got that fixed but my gears still felt off. Then my 2nd, 4th, and reverse weren't going in properly (sometimes not at all). Well that turned out to be a screw that was bouncing around blocking the gears. But anyways, this saturday i was driving on the fwy doing 90 in 5th, when it came time to slow down for the exit i could not get it out of 5th gear. So i had to literally yank it out in order to keep driving. So i tried to avoid using 5th. But i had to try it again to see if it kept getting stuck. It did, but it was worse this time. So i made a U-Turn on this narrow street so i had to reverse...well, yeah...that didnt work as planned. My reverse will not go in to gear anymore. My 1st - 4th work fine but my 5th still gets stuck and my reverse will not go in. Does anybody have an idea of what it could be? Please help me out. Thanks for your time.

sounds like your reverse lockout seized up or even broke and is blocking your shift linkage from going into 5th/rev. Remove your shifter plate from the top of your tranny and have a look inside, maybe somethings in there thats not supposed to be

I'll try that when I get home. Thanks...

no, your trans is wasted... when 5th goes so does reverse and vice versa because they are both in the back half of the trans.... get a new trans..

Arent 5th and Rev on the same synchro/shift fork? I agree that gettin a new trans is prolly the cheapest option. Replace it and send that one out for a rebuild. Never bad to have a spare trans handy.

Hmm. well, my fifth gear works fine when it's running. The only thing is once it's in, i cant pull it out. Do you think it can be my Clutch?

Every gear has its own synchro and:

1st and 2nd share shift fork
3rd and 4th share shift fork
5th and Rev share shift fork

So you had a loose screw floating about in the tranny, I assume you taken the tranny apart to remove the screw and all traces of any other foreign debris that may have also broken off do to this screw coming into contact with spinning gear and what not in the tranny???

It wasn't exactly in the tranny. I removed the boot and saw it there (Beneath the Rubber). It was a screw from the Shifter Plate. It was blocking the stick from entering the lower half of the gearbox.
