View Full Version : sound in springs/shox
i just installed my springs and shocks this weekend in my 96. i got tokico blues and sportlines. when everything was finally done, i took her for a ride and there's this weird sound coming from my front right tire. it's like a bumping sound and the faster i drive, the faster the sound goes. think of it as a heartbeat or something. when i make a left turn or i brake, the sound stops. i'm not sure where it could be coming from. what do u guys think?

does it happen on smoooth pavement or over bumps? did you make sure everything was tightened?
it happens over smooth pavement. just going down any non-bumpy road. and yea, my friends and i made sure it was really tight. when i heard the noise, we went back to make sure everything was on tightly and couldn't find any problems...

did you replace or reinstall the rubber gasket thing on the springs that goes on the spring and sits where the spring meets the upper and lower shock plates?
naw i didn't. should i have? the thing's that the left side is fine.

what about if you make a right turn? Does it happen at all speeds?

make sure your torqued down the top bolt on the suspension down to torque. fsm shows 39-59 foot pounds
it is the bolt that holds the suspension together (not the strut tower bolts-the one bolt in the middle on top of shock)
jyt747 -- when i make a right turn, the sounds still there. and yea, it happens at all speed. well unless i'm going really slowly. at 10 mph and above, it's always there.
dousan36 -- yea, the bolt is on fine.

see with you sayin it happens on smooth surfaces not over bumps means the gasket would not be the cause. the gasket missing would cause a clanking (metal to metal) between the shock plates and spring over bumps. i had this in my 240 since they didnt make the part no more for s13's for some reason.
but if its making a noise while driving it and from the r/f tire it has to be something from there. try switching tires r/f to r/r.
and the sound is not affected by bumps only smooth surfaces.

I don't know why it added the in there, but anyway, I have forgotten to do that before and it was a wierd sound, I'm sure you checked, but I like to bring it up because it can be overlooked. otherwise, sounds like it might be a ball joint or something as well, try jacking it up and see if you can feel any play in the hub area
