Hello all. So, I recently installed an Exedy clutch & flywheel on my SR. Install was straight forward. Then I start my car and the starter made a loud metallic grinding noise. My buddy who I did the install with suggested a washer on the starter bolts. Now the noise is much quieter, but is still there, start-up is a little weak with the washers too. What do you think about removing the starter and grinding the gear down a bit? I never had any issues with start-up before this. So wtf? Please help! Thanks in advance.

My fidanza made some weird noise too upon startup when I first installed it. But it has gone away and is fine now. See if it is still doing it in a month or so.

By that time his brand new flywheel could be chewed up. Take your starter out and check the bendix make sure its not wobbling. Definately something I would take care of before it causes bigger problem.

def sounds like the starter is bad, the noise may not be the starter on the flywheel, it may be the motor inside the starter itself, i just had the same problem. i took the starter and got it tested, sure enough it was bad, i got another one put it on and the sound was gone, car turns without a problem

^ But I've never had any start-up issues before the new flywheel/clutch.

Did you only try to start it once? Sometimes the first start is a little rough because the teeth aren't aligned with the bendix yet. I'm guessing this happened more than once since your posting but just taking a stab at it. My gf's car did this 2 hours from home in a Wendy's parking lot, ended up being the starter internals like a previous poster said

I'm going to inspect the starter internals tonight. My buddy just wants to grind down the starter gear! Thanks all.

they do make starter shims, much like body panel shims or any other type of shims. they give a little bit of clearance so the bendix lines up with the teeth of the flywheel.
