I picked up a '78 Datsun pickup with a 99k original mile L20 4 banger today! Runs fucking perfect! Get to go bring it home on Monday when the check clears. $800 dollar find! So I might sell the Honda. Not sure yet. I'd like to keep both, but this truck is very nice. I'll post pics when I can.

men, you find the best prices and end up with the coolest damn cars on the planet...

i can't wait to hear about the progress
-so, just how different is the L28? any plans?

Yo ho, I have plans. I don't know how much horse it generates, but it has Nissan OHC stamped across the valve cover and even for a 2.0 liter, it's tiny. I'm going to take it easy for a while, but I am going to yank the 6A ignition off the honda and stick it on that. Then, maybe a K&N, but that's all I have planned for now. I'm going to concentrate on stereo and looks for once, before I fiddle with the engine. Also, haven't done any research on this engine. The frame looks exactly the same as the '96, suspension too.

I think I am going to keep both vehicles though. Word came through (unofficial and secret) but it's possible there will be a position for me at my current job when I graduate, which would be excellent. It would pay 10-12/hr, but would be full time and that's plenty for me to live on and play with. It's not official, but looks promising.

As far as finding these things, it seems I always know where the cars are. It's like they call out to me to come find them. I almost got a 350 dollar 82 Prelude the other day, but I waited too long. Just as well, 'cause I found the Nissan. If any of you are ever near Flagstaff, let me know. It seems I can't go two weeks without finding some deal.

ok what you have there is a L20B . if you port the head and put dual solex carbs with a cam it will kick around 180hp . that was the last in the L series engine line 4 cylinder wise next up would be the Naps Z engine with 8 park plugs. stout little motor does not rev that high but has a lot of torque for a 2 liter. oh yeah thats a 720 pickup you bought. People use to stick L20B's in their 510's.

Drift Freaq!

I'm glad you know. I was thinking I'd heard of L20's in 510s. I was just searching the net and couldn't find jack shit for any real base numbers hp/tq wise. Buncha goddamn morons talking about how they're lowering their 78 Nissan. So it's a 720, not a 620? I found some info about different cams and solex carbs. I'm tempted to find a Weber for it. I just like Weber better, but I'm not going to mod it just yet. I'll wait for a bit. Yeah, you all know how that goes.

Do you know any good websites/magazines for info/performance parts regarding this engine?

Does the B refer to the single cam?

ok I will drop an even more interesting tidbit on you guys.
That was the engine that came in the first Silvia to make it to American shores the 1977- 1978 200sx. which was a Silvia and by the way shared very similar body lines to the ken mary skyline.

oh yeah chickenmanq , I used to run a sidedraft Weber on my 69 2 door 510. As far as cams go hmmmm some of the best are no longer made, but the engine can use the same cam you would use on the L16 and L18. as far as valves go its got 1.65 valves though you could put in the L28 valves which are 1.73. I believe the stock compression was 9:1 I will probably remember more later on so I will try and keep you updated . Its been a long time since I thought about L20B's

oh yeah and the B was because in Japan there was a 6 cylinder 2 liter L series engine called the L20A that came in Fairlady's . It had heart shaped closed combustion chambers and was pretty much the closest head to a Tripple s head you could get for the 6 cylinder L series engines though you had to port it (it came with small ports) and you had to put larger valves in .
Though you take that head and the L26 bottom end and you had one of the best L series 6 cylinders you could ever build. It would have a nice broad flat torque band. Because L26's were L28 crank and rods in a L24 bore size which means it still revved unlike the L28.
damn , why am I even going into this

damn, reading all of this stuff makes me want a 510 even more.

and chickenmmanq, congrats, and get some freaking pictures up soon, PLEASE. what color is it BTW? or is the paint in bad shape? and how the hell did you find a 78 datsun with less than 100k miles...dang, your good

Actually, the guy rattle-canned it once a year. And for spraypaint he did a damn nice job. At least he did that, so rust didn't get a chance to set in. Not highly likely up here (dryness) but it does happen. It's blue right now, kinda flat 'cause no clearcoat. If I have a chance, I'll change it to white or something. I won't have pics til Tuesday. I pick it up Monday. I may make a video of it though.

i dont know if youve found this site yet, but its got somequick specs of the L20b, hp/tq etc. and they called it a 620, not a 720

*edit: oh yeah, the link http://www.worldaccessnet.com/~dcmurphy/620/620L20.htm

Man, thanks a bunch for that info. I was trying to find stuff like that last night and I had no luck. I can't believe that little thing makes that amount of hp/tq. It's a damn sight better than the Honda.

L16 510 2dr ,4dr and wagon. IRS came in the 2 door and 4 door.
Oh yeah my bad on the 620 they changed over to 720 in 79. they 620 ran from mid 73 -78
I always felt the rally cams sucked but that is my opinion.

oh, my 69 2dr R.I.P. on Loma Verde ave Palo Alto Ca 1981
yes i am that old but if you met me you'd never guess hahahahha

Maybe if I have the money, I'll start a wrecking yard where no wrecking occurs. Just acres and acres of 510's, 620's, and 720's, 71 corollas etc.

Oh yeah, 94k original miles, not 99. My local junkyard only has one of these trucks. It's Gary's other parts truck, so I'm going try and get him to part with it when he's done with it. Brown one with very few dents.
