View Full Version : Xbox 360 red light fix!!!!

so i have the infamous 3 red light problem with my xbox.
i've searched and i've found that that microsoft will charge me 150 plus shipping and they still wont guarantee a fix.
then i saw some other sites that offer this "repair guide" where you can download a tutorial so you can fix it on your own.
has anyone had this problem before?
if so, what did you do to fix it? does anyone know how to fix it for cheap??

did you void your warranty? all 360's have a three year warranty on RROD to my understanding.

does it matter if you bought it before microsoft changed it to a 3 year warranty?

pretty sure it applies to everybody.
but if you can't get it replaced for free... go get cash. put it in your pocket. go to target. buy a 360, same trim as yours. swap the hard drives. return your broken one. the return people barely check it at all. just say it broke and you want your money back. they don't check serials.
i bought mine at target in november. i've returned it twice so far, hoping for a newer lot. the newest ones have a quiet fan and hdmi, mine doesn't.

I get mine back on wednesday! haha
Yea ALL xbox360's have the 3 year warranty, just call up the xbox repair hotline. Tell them that you have the 3 rings, they will get all your info (address, phone, email, serial number). Then they will have you run some tests while your still on the phone, if you still have the problem then they will send you an empty box with instructions, question sheet ( dont worry is multiple choice :) ), clear tape, return label inside.
Follow the instructions, fill out the little question sheet.
Pack it up, drop off at your nearest UPS.
In 2 - 4 weeks you get a fresh system, 1 month of xbox live, and 3 month warranty.

Easy way to solve this problem:
1. Pick up xbox. ( DO NOT UNPLUG ANY CORDS!)
2. Throw it against the wall.
3. Extinguish flames.
4. Purchase PS3.
Done.

the falcon versions have a lower percentage of RROD problems.
any lot greater than 734 should be a newer version.

The towel trick (youtube it) is only a temporary fix. Every 360 has the extended warranty that Microsoft dedicated millions of moolah to. You might get lucky though. I sent mine in and I actually got back a newer model with the newer chipset AND the HDMI port. Doesn't happen to everyone though. Plus, they give you a free month of Gold live membership.
I sent mine in after the 3 rings of death, and got it back 3 weeks later.'
It has worked awesome ever since.
The 3 year applies to every xbox.

My shit fucked up right before christmas I think, go to xbox.com/support and fill out the repair form and they will send you a 'cofin' for your box so you can send it to them for repair. I got mine back in about 3 weeks and no problems yet
mine died out of no where it lasted almost 2 years luckily it happened like 3 weeks before my best buy prp ran out so i returned it and got a nice new falcon with hdmi. Best buy product replacement plans are definitively worth it.

xbox 360 should still be under warranty they extended it and also if and when your xbox does get the red lights of death send it in and your warranty will start all over again and again for every time u send it in.

how are you guy's getting the rings of death? is it because you guy's play the xbox all day or something? i never had a problem with my xbox 360 or ps3. the only problem i ever had was i went cheap on that F***ing rechargeble battery from nyko instead of the original micorsoft one, battery doesn't even charge, so i'm playing it with the cord that came with the kit, because i don't want to buy anymore battery's for that battery draining controller. haha

For what it's worth I barely ever play my 360, it never red ringed, and I always used to point and laugh at the nerds who ruined their's by playing whatever it is they play constantly and never going outside. Then, my girlfriend and I went to play Scene It and it did it. I let it sit for a day, still nothing. I tried everything...nothing. I've probably played it 50 times since 2 weeks after launch and never for more than an hour.
I sent it back and the new one has been working fine.
Apparently the problem is the clip that holds the chip down. I guess when the chip gets hot, it actually bends a bit and loses contact with the outer-most...contacts. Then it red-rings. Some people have actually bolted it down using a more uniform holder and it worked fine. That's what I read when I was trying to fix it myself.
BTW: Someone explain to me the "three red circles" thing. Where are the second and third circles on it?! Haha. :coolugh:

I fixed my old xbox by modifying the bracket for the CPU. The chip need the exact pressure on 4 corner (i used small spacers(washer) with 4 bolts and torqued them down. The motherboard doesnt fit anymore in the casing, but i dont care... it work.

because you get a brand new xbox not a refurbished unit and i went from an original launch 360 to one with hdmi and the cooler cpu. M$ is constantly making improvements to the hardware making it more reliable. so the newer ones are less likely to brick themselves.
