There are 4 possible problems.
1:The switch is bad, just because it illuminates the light does not necessarily mean that it is sending the signal to the computer
2:There is a broken/shorted wire
3:The overdrive solenoid in the trans is bad
4:The trans has an internal problem
As far as which problem it is, good luck! You're gunna need it! The first thing you need to do is verify that the overdrive solenoid is getting a signal. You need to get a wiring diagram and patch into the correct wire with a LED light and some long wires. If the light illuminates while you are driving then the solenoid is getting signal! That means that the problem is internal. If it is not getting signal then you need to troubleshoot the rest of the electrical. My advice to you is take it to a shop. Google ATRA, Automatic Transmission Rebuilder's Association. You should be able to find a REPUTABLE shop in your area through them. Don't just take it to a random shop as most of them will just try to sell you a re-build immediately. Also ATRA member shops offer a nationwide warranty if you do decide to have it re-built.
