k, this is the blacktop im about to get.. this is the actually one.... the guy claims, its a 96 blktop sr... its not a s14 cause it doesnt have the hump... and i assumed it was s14 cause of the year but come to find out recently, s13 blktops were made thus far...

but i searched and all the photos i found of s13 blktop had BLACK lettering where it says in the middle, "intercooler turbo"... and this is just chrome... and it looks oem, not scratched off...

so is this a 1996 s13 blktop sr? if not, what is it? cause it does have the BB t28 on it... not the t25 that comes stock. (but that could and prolly is just an upgrade? so, it being a t28, will that put me up to about the same hp as the s14 blktop? cause theres not TOO much difference between them besides turbo side and VVTC... correct? any one that has any god info, please provide... im finally stepping into turbo-land.. hehe :)

Blacktop S13, you can tell because of the heat sinks on front of the head. Look up redtops, theyre smooth in the front. All S13 engines (blacktop or redtop) are the same engine with some very very minor differences. Best way to tell what kinda blacktop you have, check the ECU. Kouki 180sx Type-X blacktops has the most difference, just cuz of the harness pinouts...Blacktop S13s were made from 93-97.

It's not exact because they're interchangeable (I had a 98 auto motor running on a 62 with a manual) but...
91-94 SR20DET MT - ECU #62
91-94 SR20DET AT - ECU #63
94-96 SR20DET MT - ECU #E5
94-96 SR20DET AT - ECU #E6
96-98 SR20DET MT - ECU #J4 *The last version of these engines have a different part no but it's the same ECU code
96-98 SR20DET AT - ECU #J5 *The last version of these engines have a different part no but it's the same ECU code

That is for the S13 motors only.

Did the kouki 1997 type-x 180sx used the J4 ECUs too? I thought they used a different ECU and had some pinout difference over the non type-x 180s.

They're called J4 ecus, but the part number is incremented by one in the last digit. I don't know anything more.
The MT J4 ecus switched to 23710-60F07 from 23710-60F06 in May 97.

You should see it on the ECU, you cant miss it unless its been peeled off...hell, even rom-tuned ECUs usually have the ECU number still on them...

Its possible thats a 96. The only way to tell is to check the ecu.

edit: Im late. but

There are two redtop versions. The later ones cooling fins on the head just like blacktops. The valve cover paint is also two different shades. One is darker one is lighter.

The oil pickup, and waterpump are the biggest differences for S13 motors

If the sticker is missing just post up and I'll add the ECU part numbers to my list up there. They are too confusing to type in a list if they won't be needed.

You can run a redtop ecu on a blacktop and vice versa, i've done both, with the skinny o2 sensor and fat o2 sensor and noticed no gas mileage difference. Some later redtops had the fins on the head as well..

The guy's probably telling the truth, that is a blacktop, and its pretty clean.

I ran a J5 ECU engine on a 62 ECU a long time ago, I don't remember real well but it required me to rewire the TPS because the auto is a 5 wire instead of 3 and I had to swap a few wires on the ECU connector. It's been a really long time and I'm not sure of the specifics.
