i went driving tonight and i started smelling some burning oil...

i got to the end on the road, pulled over and checked under the hood. my oil cap was gone and oil had sprayed out all over my engine bay.

i clogged up the hole with a sock drove 10mph to chevron, bought some more oil and attempted to drive home very slowly...i got about 5 miles and all kinds of white smoke is pouring from my tailpipe so i pull over into the gas station and get a ride home.

my motor was not knocking or making any weird sounds, it wasnt overheating but it did feel weak and had all the white smoke shooting out the back

tomorrow im gonna get it home and compression test it and try to figure out how bad the damage is..but if i sprayed out oil while mashing on it hard is the damage already done? if anyone has had a similar experience or any guesses or advice for me please let me know

dude you definently torched it, sounds like the headgasket, piston rings maybe. think about all the parts in your engine that need oil. that white smoke means coolant in the combustion chamber.

actually white smoke is just coolant or unburnt fuel.

ok im in for a long day... i need to go back to my car, hopefully its still there, and get it back home

then the plan is to change the oil and do a compression test...im curious to see if i really messed it up or maybe this could turn into one of those "bulletproof ka truckmotor" stories

but whatever happens i hope i can at least diagnose the problem today

Good Luck man. Hopefully it's nothing major.

Happened to me once when I left the oil cap unscrewed on my corolla. Pulled over when I noticed the white smoke (oil burning on hot motor). Screwed cap and put some more oil and it was fine. Just had a messy engine bay to clean up.

Actually, unburnt fuel will cause black smoke. Blueish smoke is oil and white, sweet smelling smoke is coolant.

Did you bother to check how low you were on oil before you limped it to chevron? How much oil did you add when you got there?

I think we all have one of those stories LOL.

Good luck mang. Hopefully you didn't torch your rings.

EDIT: Omfg you are bad luck, dude. Somehow my oil cap got taken off (I haven't even so much as popped my hood for a week), and I went out for a drive to go do some last minute Valentine's shopping, and every time I would sit at a light and take off, I would smell a mixture of gas and oil. The oil smell is pretty typical of my car, though it doesn't leak or consume oil (strange, I know), so I didn't think much of it the first couple of times, but then it started getting to me. When I got where I was going, I popped my hood to see an oily mess of a valve cover and exhaust heat shield, with my oil cap neatly on top of the spark plug wires. I checked the oil level and it didn't register but on the very end of the stick, so I got in my trunk and put a quart of oil in it, and she's where she needs to be now. It was just too crazy, because like I said, I haven't even opened my hood for like a week, much less taken off my oil cap. I noticed I had a lot of blowby for an 83k mile motor lol.

go back with a oil cap and check oil level and top it off. depending on how long you drove it it should b koo

Wrong, Unburnt Fuel is White, Raw fuel is black, trust me i know ive blown my set of injector O rings

let me clarify

White smoke kinda like when u first start in morning or a little more intense + unburnt Fuel

007 Spyhunter white clouds = Coolant.

I cracked an exhaust mani on a cold cold day by backing in to a parking space and hitting the muffler. On my way home, all of a suddon it got real loud and boggy, since mani cracked o2 senso wasnt reading right, so it was running extremely rich now, so hot gas, plus gas seems to = sparkplug wire ignition. I was unaware of that at the time, so I pulled over to a gas station under the light, because it was a dark, not thinking of course, it was late, I was tired, and the car was smoking.

I lifted to hood carefully and flames shot up.....right next to the gas pump. So after I put on clean underwear I grabbed a towel from the back got it wet with waster fluid and dropped it on the engine.

A few new welds and plug wires and electrical tape pieces later, I was rolling again : )

top the oil off and check it. start it let it run for a few see if you hear anything. and then go from there

so as far as i can tell my morot is ok... what happened was i overestimated how much oil had shot out into my engine bay... i think i just kinda freaked out when i opened my hood only to see oil smoking off the headers and sprayed everywhere while thinking about how i was just smashing on it for like 10 minutes... when i got the chevron i put like 2 quarts in just to be safe... apperently that was too much and it was overflowing into my cylinders and causeing all that white smoke to come out the back...

im glad that i left it there just to be safe instead of driving home though... i went there the next morining, changed the oil and actually found that my oil cap was not lost... somehow it got wedged ontop of the sterring rack... i drove it home on the side streets then checked the compression and changed the plugs and it seems to be cool now... ive taken it on the freeway once but i need to be cautios this week just to make sure i really didnt damage anything

oh ya the trick is to tie a knot at the end so it wont hang down too far... i think the sock oil cap is JDM too haha jk
