i'm thinking about selling my acura and just having a beater for daily driving, and i've been looking at these 80's volvos... four cylinder, rear wheel drive, stick, built like tanks. anybody ever had one? there's one local with a couple smashed windows for five hundred bucks, i'm thinking about picking it up and doing about a hundred dollars' worth of rehab, then using all the money from selling my blackura to get some work done on the s13. oh, and dropping down to liability on the volvo, which i'd imagine would cost like nothing. or maybe i'll just clean up the volvo, get in a little paint practice, and sell it for some easy cash. either way, who's had experience with these? my dad used to have a 745, and about three cars back i had an 850, but nothing as old as a 240 would be.

My mom had an 88(?) 240DL wagon. That motherfucker is a goddamn tank - it went through 5 fairly decent accidents and lived. My uncle owns the car now and it is used as a delivery car for his business with somewhere around 475k mi on it. I don't think it's had anything other than routine maintenance on it, save for accident related bullshits.

these cars are sick as fuck get itI'd hoped I'd never hear 'sick as fuck' used in context with these fucking things. :loco: Tanks, yes; fucking sick, no.

i say the same thing when i see people getting excited about cressidas and the like... yet i'm strangely drawn to these stupid volvos. ah well, to each his own, and all that. vip is still gay, though.

i have the same intercooler sitting in my garage. i'm gonna try and set up my koyo behind it and see if it still cools enough. hopefully it works. turbo mustangs use this intercooler on their cars, as they hold high pressure with little pressure drop!

i dont own one, but i work at a general service shop (i work in the express lube area) and i know the motors in those are DAMN stong
one guy came in, he tried doing the oil change himself, he couldnt get the oil filter on so he drove it 10 minutes w/ no oil or filter on the car, the thing ran fine after we did the oil change on it.....

turns out he couldnt get the oil filter on because the motor mount was broken and the motor was sittin at an angle in susch a way that the mount got in the way.

the owner of the car is somewhat of a nutcase.....

Here's his build thread, the older pictures don't work though.

yes volvo 240's are tanks, but slow as shit... my mom has an 84 240DL, with a carb'ed 4 cyl... just horrible. it needs to be warmed up for like 15 mins before driving otherwise it stalls (auto), and while warming up you need to use the right combination of the manual choke and the gas pedal to keep it runnign until its warm... and most of all its slow and sloppy... but yeah, relaible and built like tanks. or you can throw a 350 or a mustang 5.0 into it and have a decently quick brick...

Hmm, looks like the endtanks are lined up perfectly for a short routing setup.... hmmm..

the slower the better, this is going to be my daily... and i'm definitely getting a stick. also.. i'm pretty sure like 85+ has efi.

I had a volvo 240dl as a daily driver for a while. Car had 260,000 miles and pretty much all my relatives and family owned the car at some point before me.

I beat the crap out of it for over a year and it never failed me. Slow as hell, the car hella leaked, but damn that thing ran like a champ.

Car finally blew a headgasket when my mom was drivin it home from the store hahaha. We got it fixed then traded it into the honda dealership for a 04 civic and we got a whopping 364 dollars for it.

Funny you ask since i picked one(1991 Volvo 240) up from my neighbor for $100 not too long ago. I had actually put up a thread asking about some upgrades for it on Zilvia. http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=157192&highlight=Volvo+240 (http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=157192&highlight=Volvo+240)
I've owned it for a few months and everything is easy as shit to work on!!

Brakes: 4 piston stationary fronts (think Z32)
2 piston rears with drum parking brake (think Z32 rear)

Motor: beast of a 4 cyl N/A Not the quickest thing out there, but torque out the ass!!!

Tranny: Changed the pan gasket and the fluid not too long ago, now it shifts like brand new!!

As for reliability/safety: ABS brakes, Dual Water Pump Belts, SRS Airbag, Integrated Roll Bar, and enough trunk room to pack a family of 4 into.

Also people in Australia are notorious for doing V8 Swaps on these and parts are wicked easy to find :) HOPE THIS HELPED A BIT, AND GOOD LUCK!

I had a '86 240 turbo wagon, thing was fully loaded and sounded like a turbine engine during spool.
