Ohhhhhh, can't WAIT!

So now it’s final. Nissan will showcase the next new Z-Car at the L.A. Auto Show this November. This will be the real thing, not a teaser, according to a source, who added that the car looks ‘fantastic.’’

A lot of blurb on the new Z is already out in cyberspace but yes, the new Z will be shorter than now (some four-inches, apparently) but a touch wider, still have two-seats and yes, power will come from the same excellent 3.7-liter V-6 found in the Infiniti G37 Coupe.

So welcome the 370Z and while the new design will be evolutionary, we understand it’s still instantly and unmistakably a Z. Roll on November.

Don't expect official specs for a while. Usually a press release with all that info follows the cars release.

So sorry, I got your hopes all up so soon, but we have like 9 months before we find out everything.

IIRC the "hatchback" is what makes the Z inherently heavy. Glass means weight or something?

Aw screw it. I'll get an AM V8 RS.

They always marketed it as the 'Z car/Nissan Z' instead of the 350Z.

(Wonder if that means we'll get a Nissan S)

An early test mule for the next-generation 2009 Nissan 350Z recently arrived at the Nürburgring test track in Germany. It wore what looked like sheet metal from the current-generation Z-car, but a closer inspection makes it clear that this car has been substantially modified.

Various cutlines indicate a reworked chassis with a shorter wheelbase. This observation has ignited rumors of a new Nissan sports car smaller than the 350Z, but we think something else is going on.

At roughly 3,600 pounds, the current-model Z-car is far heavier than its natural competition, the 2,900-pound Porsche Cayman and the 3,100-pound BMW Z4. We think Nissan is looking to push the Z closer to its natural competitors when it comes to performance, and this cut-down chassis might be an attempt to create a leaner, lighter Z.

Instead of employing exotic materials to reduce the Z-car's weight, it looks like Nissan is simply whittling down the chassis to a smaller size. The current Z has a wheelbase of 104.3 inches, and while the next-gen Z isn't likely to match the short 95.1-inch wheelbase of the Porsche Cayman, we're guessing something between the two numbers is a safe bet.

All our talk about BMWs and Porsches isn't just speculation, either. According to our spy photographers, Nissan brought along a BMW Z4 coupe and a Porsche Cayman for this particular test session at the Nürburgring.

And don't be surprised to see a 370Z badge planted on the trunk lid of this new car, as an upgrade to Nissan's new 3.7-liter V6 is also likely to appear. Rated at 330 horsepower in the Infiniti G37, the 370Z's V6 would probably come in around 320-325 hp, a modest bump to the 306 hp delivered by the current 3.5-liter V6.

With so much attention focused on the debut of the Nissan GT-R this fall, look for Nissan to wait until early next year to reveal the 2009 370Z.

if thats the car it will actually make the Z33 go up in value and collectability, as that thing pictured above looks like a butt ugly attempt at a Audi TT rip off. I think thats a artist rendering. Japanese mags while posting pics of test cars quite often exaggerate things because they really don't know. Like those headlights. lol

Yea it's just a rendering. Usually these kind of renderings are based on two things.

1. They have seen the car and they base the rendering off of what they've seen.

2. They've been told about the car (either officially or unofficially)and again are basing the renderings off of that info.

I don't take any of these very serious, but speculation sure is fun.

The spy photo of the car's front end doesn't show LEDs on the bottom of the headlight. Quite possible its on the side behind the tape?

I will wait until more spy shots roll out before I have a good idea on how this car will look.

Regardless, I think it will be a nice evolutionary improvement.

The rear quarter of the car is the nicest part of it.

In my opinion; these two cars come more close visually to the 240Z than the 350... Then again, I'm sure Nissan wasn't trying to really emulate the 240, but it would have been nice.

Perfect examples of how it should look. Just mimic the lines and over all form. But don't make it "retro". The shape is what makes the old Z's so scrumptious.

Sneak Peek: Nissan Exposes Future Z Car

Date posted: 04-29-2008

CASCAIS, Portugal — Taking a page from Mazda R&D, Nissan's top designer hung a "sculpture" today on the wall of a meeting room at the company's Nissan 360 global product review: a sculpture that hints at the design of the next-generation Nissan Z.

When Mazda did it in the 1980s at its North American design studio in Irvine, the joke was that the sculpture was really a life-size copy of the hood and driver-side fender of a top-secret car sports car that everyone was speculating about.

The Mazda Miata was finally put into production almost two years after designer Tom Matano and his team hung their "sculpture," and he laughed for years as he gleefully recounted how hundreds of vendors and automotive journalists had visited the R&D facility without ever noticing that the secret roadster they were obsessing over had been hanging there in plain sight all that time.

Nissan Design Chief Shiro Nakamura wasn't as secretive as Matano — he blatantly pointed out his wall hanging to a group of 80 North American automotive journalists gathered in the hotel meeting room in this costal resort town about 17 miles west of Lisbon.

It represented, he said, a new Nissan that people would be seeing more of in the fall.

With that clue as a starter, the wall most of us had ignored during an hour-long reception before Nakamura gave his pre-dinner speech took on new dimensions — three dimensions, to be exact.

Despite the opaque fabric covering that blurred and softened the shape, it quickly became apparent that the car he was hinting at was, in all likelihood, the new Z due next year.

Nakamura also showed off a crimson red design study that he said contained elements of future design treatments for Nissan's upscale Infiniti division.

If you fixed the headlights the rest of the car is not bad. Once again I have the feeling this car will not look right till we actually see a rolling production model. This same shit went on before the 350z was released and before we saw production versions of the GTR.

I just realized how the headlights resemble Wakabas...sort of.

Anyways yeah I agree on the G37. Thought they were ugly at first (still like the G35 styling more) but I've seen a few in real life and they've grown on me. I walked around a white one at the mall and while the rear (tails and chrome strip) still bug me, they're not bad overall. I've also seen a few with aftermarket wheels and a drop and they look a helluva lot better.

Hmm, I wonder if people are gonna start doing conversions on them. It looks like all you'd need to change is the headlights and fender, and you can use the previous front end.

http://www.roadandtrack.com/assets/image/2008/W17/422200831440.jpg

front bumper looks very unrefined. imho, it doesn't look all that different to the current model at all. I get the impression as if someone ordered some mismatched after-market headlights and a tacky front bumper. doesn't flow with the rest of the lines of the car. It's not offensive looking, but it does seem unfinished and rather dull. I really hope this is not the final product.

Perhaps the technical improvements will be more noteworthy than the aesthetics. Would be nice to have the attesa as an option.

Bushido
05-01-2008, 04:32 PM
of course it isn't the final product. why do people always take these artist renderings as something more than just that- artist renderings.

as for the nissan "sculpture" i'll bet that thats actually the sucessor to the 240sx, not the 370z. There have been rumors of the z's wheelbase shortening, but i don't think they will go that short with it. I think that shortened 350z test mule running around was actually the new 240sx in 350z clothing.

well I have to say that the styling cues are now more 240z than the current Z and it does look better. I guess its time to go check out whats popping on my 350z to see if they have come across this yet.

Ok this just in from my350z.com a member over there has reported that Nissan has confirmed the car will be out in the 2008 facial year. That means it drops in august as a 2009 model. You will see it in showrooms in late August and fall.

Yea, if they have any more info, let us know.

The article did say it will be 330hp this time.

Which is good because that means the new Silvia could be in the 220-250hp range and not intrude.

Nissan would have IMO, the best sports car line-up of any non exotic manufacturer in the World.

It does, doesn't it. I think it might be the side windows that may be giving that impression. I do hope it is a little lower though.

Also, I wouldn't call the Z window design necessarily retro. It just took some cues from the timeless Z styling.

if anything is true about what ive read...the 370 is going to carry quite a hefty price tag compared to it its outgoing sibling the 350...pricing is ANTICIPATED to start around 37-38 grand for the new 370

i think somehow this REALLY comfirms nissans entry model sports coupe to take the place of the outgoing 350z...especially with the 370s estimated price tag (eeek)

im hoping nissan tweaks that front end a bit before its unveiled in sept/oct at the LA Auto Show/Tokyo Auto Show...i dont mind the headlights...what kills me is that front bumper...but after its unveiling...thats it...with a production date of a 2009 model...what you see at LA Auto/Tokyo Auto is whats going on sale

I don't know. It's not really doing much for me. I love Nissan but their new designs as of late really disappoint me. I saw a few new Maximas on the road and seeing the headlights in person doesn't change my opinion on how ugly they are. The 370Z doesn't have that "sleekness" I was expecting. It's not low and wide enough. I expected a look similar to the TVR Sagaris but I guess I was expecting too much. It still looks chunky like the current Z but I guess that's how all new cars are gonna be from now on. Big and chunky.

The side profile isn't too bad...I'll give it that much but other than that I'm not really interested in it anymore, whether or not that's not what the final product with look like.

Actually given the whole high beltline issue which I have commented about before the 370 looks pretty damn good. This is coming from a person who has a very deep love of S30's. In fact I love S30's more than S13's! LOL .
Truth be told this is actually a real step in the right direction for Nissan on the current renditions of Z cars. While I do like Z33's the 370 has a much more aggressive sports car look to it than even the 350. It also blends the heritage of the S30 with current generation Z's and GTR's in a pleasant way bearing homage to its heritage overall.

While I too am not a fan of the headlights or tails thats a minor issue as is the bucktooth look of the front bumper. You could smoke out the boomerrang area of the headlights and tails to blend with say a Black paint job to make it look more normal. Most like their will be aftermarket bumper manufacturers who will make a non bucktooth bumper. If Nissan decides to keep the incisors.

Fact is your not going to see any major car manufacturer short of specialty sports car companies making low beltline cars anymore. Its basically Crash safety standards lean towards high beltlines. Hell even Mazda raised the beltline on the Miata besides making it ugly. LOL

Not in the least Z4's are boxy i.e. their lines are squared off at odd angles. This is much more fluid and sexy. I am liking this a lot. Its shaping up to be a lot better than the 350z and I like the 350Z lol. Shit if they had come out with this first it would be even more of a hit than the 350 was and the 350 was a hit.
This is going to sell well.

Notice the reflection in the driver's side window of the rear shot. The guardrail is the same, too.

Also, notice that the road lines are identical in the front view shot. Also, the trees are not so dissimilar in both of the pics.

Regardless, it's a pretty damn good job of showing what it looks like without the camouflage.

there is no replacement for a traditional H pattern and three pedals.

an overall improvement and evolution from the 350z, but it still doesn't look like a z to me.

that looks more like the 280z than it does the 350 the rear quarters are tribute for sure. overall i like the look of it, the headlights and tailights are not the most attactive but at the same time are somewhat pleasing to the eye in comparison to the shape of headlights in other vehicles.

GSXRJJordan
10-25-2008, 01:57 PM
Paddle shifters + DSG transmission are really "better" as in faster around a track...

But that's not what this is, and that's why it's not as good as a traditional 6spd manual.

Automatics with paddle shifters are still automatics - you still have a torque converter instead of a clutch system, so you're losing more power, and when you click a paddle/button, the computer tells the tranny to shift, and whenever it feels like it, it executes the shift - that lag is annoying as hell.

I think the car looks aiight, but its silly to think of it as a 'muscle car' like the Japs do... it's got nothing on the c6 vette, (probably around the performance of the Camaro and Challenger v8s though) but will probably cost almost as much. If I could get a base model with the 3.7L and a 6spd for $25k like you could with the 350z, I'm all for it.

My guess will be the BASE model will now start around $35-$38k range. That's about $10k more then the base 350z. This will def. move it more upmarket to compete with the 911 better.

What concerns me is that we're not hearing about "Ring" times or any other performance figures compared to the Porsches of the world.

muddafakka
10-29-2008, 09:11 AM
The overall shape is kinda nice (side profile especially) but I still can't get over those head/tail lights. I don't think they'll ever grow on me.

The interior looks pretty good though. I remember a lot of people complaining about the Z33's interior.

It'd be kinda cool if they offered it with turbo right out of the factory but that might probably take away from GT-R sales and the smaller coupe they plan on coming out with.

weighing in here from Chicago-land, It looks great. In fact those official side shots having an amazing amount of of S30 heritage in the look. From the side angle the car looks like a S30 with crazy body mods for track use. I like it and I like it a lot. I honestly feel right now that the new version of the S chassis will just not look nearly as dope. I know a lot of you hate to even think that. Though how could Nissan make something look better than this car and be cheaper?

So what are they going to do when a 370z can out perform a GTR just by turboing it? Who will pay the extra 70k for a GTR when it's basically impossible to mod?

no kidding right

i know personally im dying for a daily driver that is 4 cyl, rwd, turbo and i will barely touch...oh and that is 100% SMOG LEGAL!!!!

when that new S chassis hits in 2010...i know i wont be doing a whole lot to the car until its completely paid off...but it will be awesome to buy it brand new, take care of it and baby it and know that no one else has ever beat the mess outta the car

building old s chassis is fun and all...but theyre honestly getting TOO old and turning into more of a "restoration project" than an actual "race car" when you build them...i know my current S13 is prolly the LAST s chassis im going to build for a VERY long time simply because id love something newer and a bit more up to date as far as electronics, stock engine management and chassis age go

buy a 2010 370z for 40k after taxes and fees and bs.... then spend another 20k to make it turbo and perform as good if not slightly better than the GTR....

then spend another 20k in the life of the loan on the car or 5 years, replacing blocks and rear ends and replacing other shit that is no longer warrantied because of engine modification.

at that point your already spending about 80k and thats about what the GTR has been selling in San Diego.
