this may have ben covered, and i tried to search putting up a few different things and nothing came up.. so here i am asking for advice...
im about to purchase my first sr, after being completely NA for my entire driving life... finally got the money now... its a 96, s14 blacktop... come with stock ballbearing t28 of course, and i think boosts stock on 12 psi right? anyway, i wanna boose about a bar (14psi) or so... and the car i just test drove with the sr in it, it was boosting up to 12psi... (with front mount)... now, what do i need to do to boost 14-16 psi or so... i know obviously i have to buy a boost controller, and probably bigger injectors like 550cc or something right? and im not sure but maybe a new fuel/pressure reg? so if you can help me out that would be sweet.. heres the specs of the motor so you know whats on it so you wont have to ask.
96 s14 blktop:
-front mount intercooler
-walbro fuel pump (guessing 255)
-stock injectors (370cc)
so what do i need?

The stock T28 is set at 8lbs, you could use S15 injectors,If you wanted so you wouldn't have to spend a lot of cash on tunning, if you get bigger injectors with higher flow than that you would def need some kinda tunning..
if your engine is strong/clean, it should boost 12-14 psi without causing damage.and In my opinion you could do that with stock enjectors, but you would be maxing out or near maxing the injectors..I had my stock S14 enginge with FMIC and boost controller, boosting 14psi for almost a year, with no probs,
you will get mixed reviews but, it is possible, to boost 14psi without having to upgrade the injectors and have to drop big$$$ on tunning, just go one step at a time...first make sure the engine is good/strong, then make sure it is installed correctly and reliably, then after getting used to it go ahead and start upgrading..thats my opinion, hope I helped..

yeah man its been a while!! havent been on to muich working a lot!! but yeah you helped... but what cc are the s15 injector agaain... like 480's or something? so you think if i got those i could boost 14 psi? i dont wanna have to worry about whether its gonna hold or not... haha... i wanna know... and yeah its a strong motor... VERY CLEAN.. already has 265whp... but i wanna get it up to about 300whp... and i think around 14 psi would do it about.. maybe 280whp only tho... well if its 8psi stock, how is it boosting 12 psi then? it doesnt have a boost controller... jsut a turbo tomer and a boost gauge but that has NOTHING to do with how much it boost at all.. lol. hmmm. any ideas?

pick up some bigger injectors, walbro, an Safc and a hallman mbc....should get you in the 250whp range i believe...maybe more if you want to push it

Congrats on the blacktop, but I would stick to 12psi max. Boosting 16psi on a used engine without doing a rebuild could cause some problems down the road. Get a good tune, upgrade you cooling system and enfuckingjoy.

maybe the wastegate was set to open at 12psi some how.., but that is geting more techincal than i would know lol..
i just know some basics..
but did the person say it is boosting 12 psi? or does the boost guage read 12psi?
my first guage read 18 psi even though my boost controller was set to 14..
(bad guage)
hepefullly more ppl chime in to help out..
but yea if you get the s15 injectors you could boost higher, but your engine would run a bit richer, you woudl want some kind of tunning to be completley safe.. maybe at least a AFC

eastcoasts14- it already has 265whp... it has walbro, and front mount... and its boosting 12psi and idk why, if its sposed to be boosting 8psi... is this unsafe?

yeah afc sounds simple and good... lol... yeah it must be something with the wastegate... its a rebuilt turbo too its like brand new... spools up at around 2000rpms... lol.. fuckin great.
and yeah the boost gauge reads 12 psi.

how much is the engine costing?
is it the complete swap?
you should take it down to Steve shadows dyno place to make sure it is pushing 265 cuz thats a lot of power withoiut tunning for a stock blacktop..even maxing out the turbo ...
usually stock T28 with larger injectors and good tunning(very good) at max psi should be from 265-300

No afc. For $250 more, you could get an emanage ultimate, with the patch harness. Then you can tune fuel/ignition separately, and have extra outs for fans etc.

Gabe- actually im just gonna buy the coupe with the sr already in it... im just gonna sell my car... just want a new project... but it has kei office coilovers and megan tension rods/megan front/rear strut bars/ hks blow off/ greddy front mount, with greddy piping... yada yada.
k, i looked up the specs the other day of all the sr motors.. it said the s14 blacktop comes stock with a t28 BB, and has stock hp of about 220-230 or something like that... with the greddy front mount/piping/ dp/ 3in exhaust/ that all will take the hp up about another 30-45 hp from what i understand right? and the wastegate, some how is not boosting 8psi, its boosting 12psi.. so it sounds right to me... the guy im buying the car from said he bought the car 3 months ago and the guy he bought it from said he got it dynoed at 265whp, and 280 something at the crank... so there ya go.. mkae sense or sound like bullshit.

well even if it doesnt have that much hp its worth it... he want somewhere around $4500 and its an s14 blacktop with only like 50k, rebuilt turbo, kei office coilover, greddy front mount/piping, yada yada from above.. thats a good deal IMO...

I don't know the cost, that is something you have to talk to steve about, but the dyno is right there in Mission Viejo. So that is ULTRA local.

It sounds pretty high to me.
Most stock redtops dyno 170-190 ish, usually you dont see more than 240 with stock turbos, but heh, I might be wrong, that is why I would want to dyno it first.
You'll also get a chance to really load the car down, and listen to see if the engine is knocking etc, where as you cant stand next to the engine at WOT on the road.

if you wanna boost up to a reliable 300hp just upgrade upgrade the injectors, Z32 MAF and get a rom tune. that's what i just did.

if you dont get a power fc..which will be around 650-800...
you can either rom tune the stock one..through JWT jim wolfe tech..they tuned my first S14 motor..($600)
and there is also another really good copany who does it too.. but i forgot the name...but anyways you get the idea...
you could also get the greddy that was mentioned before(emanage) thats pretty good.. and cheaper than the other options..

first of all, what is and what does VVT stand for again? and yeah i saw on a spec site they were 220hp stock... and it makes sense to me to be at 265hp... cause just the front mount will give you at least 30-40 more hp depending on the setup right? and he has the oriinal cluster, and its currently installed in the car... and hes selling it cause he doesnt have room for it... he moved from a 3 bedroom house and shit to an apartment due to forclosure... hes a legit guy... i trust him... maybe i shouldnt.. well see... and stock s14 blktop injectors are 440cc??? do you have a link you know of to send me so i can find out all info on that motor? its a 96.

wait a sec.... im not an expert, but i just serached to MAKE SURE it was a s14 black top and not an s13... i didnt know the valve covers were slightly different.. but does anyone know if this is really an s14 blacktop? can an s13 valve cap fit on the s13 blacktop? kinda wiery... ANYONE??? i think this may be s13 after all... still a good deal with everything included thats on the car but thats whack... i think the s14 sr has 2 rows of writing thats smaller, you know were it says "twin cam 16 valve"... anyone else know?

yeah but i was looking at a thread earlier, and some guy had a redtop valve cover on a 1998 s14 blacktop sr20det... he couldve also been lying, but he said you can tell its the newer motor cause of the fins on the motor...? idk... im hoping its still the s14 but even if it is s13 blktop, i kinda dont mind cause then i dont have to deal with VVTC... whatev...

that's a s13 black top. try to determine what year is it by checking what number ecu. e5 is 94-95 ,j4 96-98 s14 sr has vtc and the valve covers are different

oh yeah, vvt is technology similar to other companies, honda made it famous by naming it VTEC, variable valve timing and electronic lift control. pretty much the same deal.

s14 sr20det w/ rear hump has 440cc while ALL s13 red/black top sr20det has 370cc.since it has a upgraded turbo then it should have bigger injectors but you need to ask the seller. from the looks of it you have a 94-98 s13 black top sr20det like i said earlier look at the ecu number

its cam tech. helps you at all rpms. im on house arrest, im not wasting any time ;) vtec actually helps you conserve fuel instead of engaging at a lower rpm, or like vtc, always engaged.

its cool, ive been in the game long enough. im just tryin to help you out n understand. blacktop is a good motor, s14 and s13. sileighty's were only made in 98, from what ive read. id just take a look at that ecu. ive seen people online buy s14 clips with s14 blacktops in em. some hella shady shit goes on and people are often too easily trusted.

Later series, but no bulge out of the front of the head for the vct.
I COULD BE WRONG. But i thought S14 engines used 370's as well, and it was the S15 engine that went up to 460(480) sized injectors?

most advertiser side feeds(sard, denso, detchwerk,) will work just make sure if the connector is diffrent , to get the plug... then splice and re wire

naw im not.... i want to but i cant get the car yet... the guy is still holding it for me... i JUST sold my car last night, (well over the phone and hes sendind a check, hope it goes thru) some guy in sf wants it and is sending a check out tomorrow and im gonna fix the few small things wrong with my car then hes gonna come pick it up and drive it home.. so next weekend i should get the car... and especially now that i found out its a s13 blktop not s14, im curious to see what its got...
what do you think its got john, realistically? it does have the BB t28, on a s13 blktop, greddy front mount, s14 downpipe, 3 inch exhaust, walbro fuel pump, z32 fuel filter (prolly dont matter), hks blowoff valve (also may not matter)... thats about it i believe... any idea?
see, the guy never said it was an s14 blacktop, he just saidit was a 96, and i assumed it was s14 cause i didnt know they made 180sx's that late... till now... so im guessing it IS A 96 s13 blktop.

Yes John, your right. S14s still used the stock 370s. S15s used 440s i think, bigger turbo too to make 250hp vs the S14s 220hp.
Anyways, back to the OP: Holy shiet dood, go do some searching. S13s ALL HAVE STOCK T-25s. If it has a T-28, then be happy that you got an upgrade. 8 psi is what the stock wastegate is set at. If the engine is boosting at 12 psi, and you dont see any boost controller attached to the wastegate line, then more than likely it got an upgraded wastegate too. More than likely an HKS one (cost about $100). 12 PSI with proper tuning with those bolt ons, im expecting 250 whp ball park, maybe less. Engine looks clean tho, like its been well taken care off. And like I said in the other thread, S13 blacktops were made all the way to 97. Basically redtops were in both the 180sx and the S13 silvias. When they killed the S13 silvias and made the S14s, nissan continued to build the 180sx and decided that theyre gonna change the valve cover color and add some mods to the engine to help it cool better (supposedly). The heat sink in front of the head and better cooling channels. Also, look at the o2 sensor, blacktops use the fat ones while the redtops use the skinny ones.

dude, i know all s13 blktops came with t25's... and this one has a t28... thats why i THOUGHT and ASSUMED it may have been an s14 blktop... but come to find out its actually s13 with an upgraded turbo... and yeah it must be an after market wastegate... cause so far ive found nothing wrong with the motor so im sure its no leak or anything... any other possibilities of it boosting higher without a boost controller? other than an aftermarket wastegate?

what matters the most is that the engine runs well man, the worst part about buyinng sr's in the US is that most of them are shit...so make sure it runs well....and worry about the rest when you got it. and if it does have 250 hp..thats awesome..
by the way how much you selling your S13 for?

its got a turbo timer and boost guage too... but i got a question, i didnt pay attention, and ive never really researched, but turbo timers have on/off switches right? like if i get pulled over and officer Dick is like "turn off your engine son" and im like "the keys are out!" and hes like "well why the fuck is it still running?" and im like, "OH thats just my turbo timer, oops! i mean!!".. haha... it does right?

if it doesnt have a direct on/off button..there will always be and off setting.selection.....like 1 min setting, then 2 min setting, them 5 min setting then off setting..comprende?

i got my engine installed by john (great job by the way!!)
obviously not a t28, but t25, front mount and a couple other things
mostly stock engine
and i just did a dyno about 2 weeks ago
according to wikipedia my car is 202 hp and 203 ft lbs torque
with the front mount and upgraded fuel pump
engine is running very very very strong very smooth curve on the dyno
and it ran 189 whp (to the wheel)
and 230 ft lbs torque which is good im happy but as u can see the frontmount and other little upgrades dont do that much of a difference as you would expect

sorta... BUT! it has a t28 (bb obviously, and REBUILT, which helps), and it boosts at 12psi, not stock 7 or 8 or w/e... i heard the t28 (i actually heard this tonight at the local 240 meet here) that the t28 has a wastegate in it that has boosts 12psi... so that could be it... and its a PHAT AS HELL greddy front mount, and was urs a redtop cause this is a black top... meaning, stock, with a t25 of course it has 205hp.. ten upgrading to the t28 probably already puts it to 220-230hp MAYBE at most.. and then front mount, the wastegate, 3in downpipe, 3in exhaust, yada yada, and a pretty fresh damn motor.... its very clean... ill post up the car's "mod list" in a minute... so therefore, im thinking around 250whp... he says the guy before him that did the swap (which was done by jpr or jrp motorsports or something) dynoed it at 265whp... but thats just word to mouth... never know.. its prettyy quick.. but then again im used to a ka.. hhaaha..

i know i dont have the t28
i have every single mod you just mentioned minus the t28
so thats only 30 hp difference between me and you right?
so im 189whp your about 220 230 whp max
265 whp is a lot that would mean you have about 280-300hp
u keep saying 220hp you mentioned whp not hp
i went to the exact same dyno you did if its at jpr
not trying to diss you or anything, im just looking out because 265whp doesnt sound right

well not exactly..but i will know if it has anywhere near 265 hp..
because it should be breaking traction everytime you hit full boost on lower gears..

yeah i didnt think so either, but you have to remember, its not boosting 8psi, its boosting 12psi... thats the difference... and i have no idea where it was dynoed... im not trying to argue or prove you wrong, thats cool if it does im just tryin to see if that sounds right... im thinking its 250whp ISH... hopefully... either way im happy, its quick... hehe... does it kinda make sense tho to maybe have 250 at the wheels?

it does... haha.. thats what makes me think... 1st, 2nd, and 3rd all broke loose... not asmuch 3rd but 2nd definitely was spinning... i mean the tires size aint huge.. i think just 205/55/16... so nothing wide.... but it did brerak loose... idk what it is.. but im gonna find out.. haha.

ehhhh i still think it will run 230whp at mostt
if anything i think you will have a higher number in torque then hp
trust me i was stunned when i first got my dyno sheets i was like.... but howwwww is it that lowww.. lol,
oh and i forgot the name of the dyno, it wasnt the dynojet one that gives u super high numbers
it supposed to be (key word supposed) the most accurate one dyno something i forgot ill look it up once i get home from work

yeah definitely... its enough.... just put it that way... haha... but ill still get a boost controller, and like 480cc injectors and a power fc and get a good tune sooner or later... itll just get old and ill want more. lol.. as always.

does the car have a vlsd?
cuz i never broke loose in 3rd with my t25 @ 12psi and open diff.
1st was useless and 2nd would spin to about 6k
but i also had 265's.
i could only break loose in 2nd when it was coldish outside.

seems like a good car to start with
as for the horsepower.. ehh it gets scary.. lol i might sound like a pussy but my t25 hits really hard it trips 2nd and 3rd gear and ive driven evo and a viper, i dont know why my car gives me more of a scare then those cars ever did lol
im still working on getting a little bigger turbo, but im sure with 270whp is more then i can handle.. lol

yeah ive driven an evo asd well, at some used car tent sale, and scared the holy shit out of the guy that took me for the ride that was trying to make me buy it but i just wanted to drive one... and this 240 seems right about the same guts as the evo.. maybe not as much hp, but lighter... thats what helps... idk its "teastefully quick" i guessyou could say... doesnt scare me at all, nut ivebeen racing first bikes and go karts for the past like 10 years so im used to fast stuff... i think like, 400hp would tickle me a little tho... hahha..
