Ok so i posted this before but i didnt have all the correct data in the previous thread. and i DID search but i could not find anything that fit my exact case.
I got a blacktop sr swapped into my '90 hatch around X-mas time along with an ACT 6 Puck Unsprung Clutch. around the time that i got it back i started to realise that it was starting to make a whirring grinding noise in 4th gear. the best way to describe this noise would be to say around 3000 rpms and down to 2000 rpms it made a r--r-r--r-r-rr-rrr-rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr noise. and so on and so forth. after attempting to drive the car as little as possible. after a short while the noise started in the other gears.
SOO..... i changed the tranny fluid with Redline MT90 and when removing the drain plug from the bottom of the transmission it appeared to just be finger tight.... so i stuck my finger in and it just came right out! had plenty of metal shavings all over the magnetic plug.
Took it to the tranny guy in my area and he said it sounded like the input bearing.so i called Marco over at the "sr20store" (he did the swap for me) he said that he would replace the transmission if i was having problems, at no charge for the transmission but a small labor fee. i agreed and had him do it. got it back today and..... the noise is still there and just as strong as before.:-/
ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Driveshaft? Need more info as when it does it. Does it do it with the clutch in and out. Also when you put in an unknown tranny, you should change the gear oil again after a couple of days to get all the gunk out.

it only does it when im in gear, while driving, under decel. but i also have the same whirring at idle while the clutch pedal is depressed as stated above.
but thats a different sound.
this is a grinding noise.

Are you 100% sure the tranny was replaced? That odd that it makes the same sound unless somehow this noise of yorus is being caused by a TOB.

did they only change the tranny? or did they change the TOB and pivot bearing as well?

Word of advice to you brotha dont take peoples word for it, hopefully you remember some identifying marks on the tranny to know for sure it was swaped without a doubt. Good luck with resolving this problem.

is the sound the same as if he never even changed the tranny or did it disappear and just come back again?

Marco is not the type of person to lie about doing work.
As for your problem, try a new driveshaft.

i also dont doubt his work.
yes the noise sounds the same so im guessing that the transmission guy was wrong and just wanted work.
i'll try the driveshaft and rear end. it does have 230k on the chassis so i'll just replace the rear end with a j30 anyway and see if that fixes my problem.
as for the driveshaft, how would i go about checking that?

I've known Marco Vargas since ~1999 and I've bought atleast 6 engines from him over the years never had a problem with anyone of them (nice dude never had a complaint about him and he has clean ass cars and a true Nissan guru) but I know of 2 people that he was shaddy with and since then never done buisness with him again, pretty much if you know your shit and he knows it you wont get taken for but if your like a total newb just be careful.

Is the noise coming from the shifter area? Or is it def coming from the trans.
GuardianLlama

well im not really sure
but yea it kinda resonates from the shifter area.
i'm pretty stumped as to what it is.
i'm pretty close to just dropping it off somewhere.

well..... today i went down to G-Dimension today in Walnut Ca
and the looked at my car and tested it a bit and simply said that it was my subframe bushings along with my exhaust hitting my rear bumper.
they changed the bushings.
I cut the bumper.
noise CONTINUES!!!!!
what the hell?!?!?!?!?!

U still haven't checked the pilot bushing. It is a (brass?) piece of metal that goes into the flywheel/crankshaft so when one inserts a 'new' transmission or changes a clutch, the pilot gear can fit snugly into the flywheel area. this could be your problem.
It could also be the synchronizers in the trans. My old KA trans was downshifted too much on the highway and the synchro for 3rd and 4th gear was beat, so it created a noise like a buzzing/whirring when backed off the throttle in those gears only.

would i have to pull the transmission just to check and see if its bad?

yes. you should have replaced it when you got ur clutch in there. perhaps someone didn't put the 6 puck disc in correctly, there is a "flywheel side" and a pressure plate side. to those things gl

I think it was just the unsprung clutch, I just got used to it.
