Hi, i just installed my tomei 2 way into the open pumkin on my s14 this past weekend, i put ll the original shims back in so it was tight inside the pumpkin and the ring gear was contacting the driveline. So i put it on the car and broke it in then drove around some more and changed the oil with the tomei fluid, but when im in neutral and take a slow sharp turn i can hear some chattering still. I was just wondering if this was normal maybe for a brand new diff because i used to have a kaaz on my s13 that i bought used in a pumpkin already and when i was in neutral or had the clutch engaged it didnt make any noise. Dont know if its possible i have the diff in the pumkin to tight or if it is because its new if anyone has some input thanks.

You probably fucked the shims up, since you said it was tight and you just basically said "fuck it" and wore it all down, so the diff is probably loose in there and just clanking around.

i put all the shims in right so it wouldnt be loose, i didnt just say fuck it, but i say fuck you.

Its normal for when the clutchs slip it will little clunking but that was bad that you put in there "So tight" you suppose to shim the pumkin until you have small gap AKA "Back Lash" inbetween the ring and pinion gears, So your probably chewin up the ring and pinion gears.
check for metal shaving in the oil

If it was tight, and you still drove on it, other than "fuck it", I guess the only other phrase you could have muttered would have been "oh well"?
You know those kids play sets with the different shape blocks and different shape holes, and you can't really force a triangle block into the circle hole? You just did with your diff.
You basically installed a diff without measuring the back lash and clearance, and just threw on the old shims thinking everything's gravy.
You fucked up, and you're saying fuck me?
Go fuck yourself n00b.
Just cause you got a pic w/ NOB doesn't make you any cooler than any other douche bag out there.

Again, you didn't check back lash and everything was tight, and you just drove on it to break it in, and somehow I'm the moron.

I believe a moron is someone who makes a Thread where the tell everyone pretty much what they did wrong in the first post and then get but hurt when we state its obvious what they did wrong and start calling us names.
:stupid: on this one.

Chattering is the clutch packs. sounds normal.
The Gear Mesh in alignment would be a howling or a whine. You should have put some marking grease on the gears and checked the mesh cause you can't be for certain that the tomei diff is the same length and offset.
...and stop the flaming both you!

Even on decel with the wheel locked?
The sound you hear is normal.
Tomei is good with their backlash.

2 way? My Kaaz was pretty noisy till I filled it with 70w140.. Now it shut up but it still clunks and skits and chirps and stuff...

most of the time you have to re shim it because it will not be the same with the one you took out. all you might need is 1 little adjustment or you might need to recheck everything. even if you put the stock one back, it can sometimes need reshimming. i'm sure the fsm explains on how to check tolerances

did you use prussian blue or some type of marking die to see where it is making contact with the ring gear?

Its normal. not unless you installed it wrong tomei diffs are a lil more noisier then the rest, but good stuff.

Does it make any noise when you're just driving around at highway speeds? You have to use a dial indicator and some kind of marking on the gear, and its not suppose to be all tight in there, thats why you got all those little shims so you can adjust it.

I've owned my tomei 2-way for about four years now. I bought it and installed it when it was new. It's normal for it to chatter even in neutral when turning, especially in the beginning. As long as you reinstalled the shims in the right place, you won't have backlash issues.

If you care enough, pull the diff and check everything. The first 2000 miles will be noisy. After that you won't hear it at all.
