To provide an answer to this question, these units provide added upper rigidity between the shock tower mount points and the firewall. The section where the wiper motor sits in on the passenger side, and the section next to the M/C on the driverside, silvia 13 and 14. I believe they are now being designed w/ included hood pop-out tow hooks.
