Attention computer gurus: laptop problem

Hey, anyone seen this problem before? I have a Dell Latitude d600 that has been working fine until just recently. It can see wireless networks just fine, but won't connect to them. It pretends like its trying, then the connection window disappears and it gives up without an error message or anything. Secondly, it won't connect wired ethernet either! In device manager, it says "This device failed to start" I tried updating the drivers and I even reformatted and fresh installed everything. Same problem. I suppose the internal card is just toast, but it is weird to me that it sees networks fine, just won't connect. Any insight/ideas/similar experiences?

if you're on a fresh format with fresh drivers, then it's a hardware problem, unless you have services turned off, which i doubt they are by default. Is your wireless connection handled by windows or a 3rd party app?
