Is there anybody familiar with trademarks here, or would like to discuss trademark laws?

My biggest problem with that article is the title: "Nissan cracks down on illegal GT-R imports".

No court has actually found any person guilty of any crime. Neither Nissan Corporate or the author has judicial power. Therefore, none of them can declare something "illegal".

P.S. Nissan definitely wants the "Nissan GT-R" trademark for the US: http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=toc&state=o2mpd7.1.1&p_search=searchss&p_L=50&BackReference=&p_plural=yes&p_s_PARA1=&p_tagrepl%7E%3A=PARA1%24LD&expr=PARA1+AND+PARA2&p_s_PARA2=gt-r&p_tagrepl%7E%3A=PARA2%24COMB&p_op_ALL=AND&a_default=search&a_search=Submit+Query&a_search=Submit+Query

What does this have to do with trademarks? Nissan is trying to keep "grey-market" cars out the countries until they are able to sell them there themselves. Depending on the country so-called grey market cars are not illegal.
Because of the demand Nissan does not want to support them until they are ready.

Nissan has issued a message that they intend to crack down on these businesses as this venture is a violation of trademark rights. It seems that some have already received paperwork from Nissan's lawyers. The automaker also wants to inform customers in the European Economic Area (EEA) that they have not consented to the sale of the GT-R by these individuals. JDM GT-Rs may not meet safety and emissions standards outside of Japan, so Nissan must detach themselves from any responsibility in case of uneducated buyers.

I guess reading comprehension is a lost art around here.

That is possible, though I would say that if someone uses the GTR logo in any advertisment and they are not a Nissan dealer, than yes that could be construed as a trademark violation.
Fact is once a specific logo is used in commerce its trademarked. Regardless of actual filing with the federal goverment i.e. getting a official registered circle around the R after the logo.
Therefor the GTR logo is already trademarked though I would bet Nissan has registered it as well World wide. That would most likely be the way Nissan is choosing to chase the grey market boys because they cannot do much more legally. The rest is up to the particular countries importation and DOT or equivelant rules.
