I'm Planning on selling my current car(99' VW, just too expensive on repairs/maintenance don't like 'paying to play') next summer, I've always really loved the body style of the 93' 240sx, but I'm contemplating between buying a 00-01' or newer civic/corolla/accord as I mainly want to get at least 300 MPG per tank or better which I currently get on my VW.

But generally how are the S13's on maintenance? I know it's an older car, but do they cost a lot to maintain even at stock? how reliable? how's the MPG?

maintenance isnt any worse than other other car. just keep up with it and you'll have no problems.

mine has been 100% reliable.

gas mileage isnt that great, i only get 24-26mpg, from what i hear, DOHC s13's (91-94) get better mileage though (more like 30)

If you want a cheap reliable car go honda. If you want a car with a great platform and you are willing to dump money into, get an s13.

Either way just by reading this post I think you need to stick with hondas :ghey:

Edit: Pretty much what I'm getting at is that the s13s are almost 20 years old, most have been beaten on by numerous people especially with the 240 craze right now. They are reliable if you take in consideration their age, but don't expect it to be problem free like a newer car. they get anywhere from 22-26mpg depending on the mileage and condition of the engine. You can find cheap parts if you look in the right places and they are easier than shit to work on.

As stated before, if you want mileage, get a honda....

if you want a good rwd build platform, get a 240

Usually, tuning a car and gas mileage do not go hand in hand

yeah i agree if you want a tin can to burn to death in buy a honda, and if you want i nice car with enough power to keep yourself from recking buy a s13. Ive got an 2 s13's a s14 and all of my friends swear by honda, but 5 of them have rolled their cars everyone one of them has blown the engine at least once, and of the guys who rolled them on guy now has 1 arm and walks with a cane, and the other guy cant walk at all so....

Thats more on the driver than the car. Trust me, you can roll a 240. You can roll a friggin tricycle If you do it right.

yeah but my point is even if you roll a 240 youve got a much better chance than if you roll a civic.

yeah, don't downgrade automobiles.

Buy a 95+ BMW 318i two door 5 speed.

Incredibly safe, very low maintenance. Replacement Parts are the same price as the 240sx, and a much nicer automobile all the way around.

hmm you guys get low gas mileage. I am getting 410 to 450 miles out of a tank with my 93 ka24de, and the lowest I get is 360. DD to school and work, both highway and city.
Also mine has been very reliable, granted I do maintenance by the book and a lot of preventive maintenance...

i get 28mpg if i stay out of boost, and dont drive like a retard, which i do on occasion, but yeah, it's all really in the tune, i tuned for reliability and drive ability.

yeah but my point is even if you roll a 240 youve got a much better chance than if you roll a civic.

Weight distribution, once a civic starts spinning it's very difficult to regain control, 240's (mostly due to being RWD & having the tranny between the seats instead of under the engine) can spin out easy, but regaining control is cake compared to the civic. 240's have lower center of gravity than civics and thicker tires, also having RWD allows for more steering control through hard cornering further reducing roll over risk.

That being said,
HOW TO ROLL A CAR OVER:
step one, go fast
step two, go sideways
step three go upside down
step four go right side up
step five go upside down (etc. etc...)

Any who, my KA24E is down to 2.5 cylinders now and it's made a world of difference on my mileage, back up around 25ish! was sitting at around 21-22 from stomping it all day long, drag coefficients are the suck. :D

yea, I did research a while ago and supposedly s13's were one of the highest ranking for safety in their class at the time. Take that fc (fire car) and supra.

I get 31 MPG highway in my SOHC KA. No where close to that city driving though.

um i donno if u have a bmw or not but they arent to cheap if you need to fix them. i have one and its like a money hole. once i get 1 thing fixed for a ridiculous amount another thing breaks:-/

OP - You get 300MPG? IF so keep it.

FYI 300miles per tank is irrevelant as s14 tanks are 17 gallon. 300+ miles are easy if you maintain your car. I have a check engine light on for egr stuff, and I still get 300+ miles. That is because our tanks are huge. Filling up a tank is expensive.

I average about 25-30 mpg on my s14.... however that was with the odometer. My friend did gas mileage using the mileage off his gps and it was only like 17mpg... but i think gps doesn't take elevation changes into account.

My sr20det gets about 20 mpg in town

if I am light on the throttle about 25-28 mpg on the hwy.

This is with 850cc injectors, a full standalone, Greddy IM, GT3076R, etc etc.

:mrmeph:

see what good tuning does?

It trumps my J30 by almost 75% more efficency and has literally more than double the output at the flywheel !

I get about 34mpg highway in my rebuilt SOHC. But that is with some weight reduction, a header, and 3"

I get pretty crappy gas mileage. I'm guessing cause of my busted EGR, but it seems to be running fine now. I live on campus at CSUN so I don't really take it out as much. I got 270 miles on one tank once, but that was with mixed freeway and city driving. One time I got 60 miles on half a tank, dunno why :tweak: and no I was not flooring the shit out of it.

Who really cares about gas mileage and drives a 240?

DD = civic.

Good platform to build on and fun to drive = 240sx.

Stick with the civic if you're lookin for a DD. I mean 240's are like 10+ years old, they were made from 1989-1998, so of course they're not gonna run top notch like a 2002 civic.

I usually get about 27MPG on my SR if I don't get on it too much. This is city driving only, no highway.

i drove from miami florida to toronto canada, straight through.

car was loaded with basically everything i own 4-500lbs id guess
avg cruising speed was 75-85mph
avg fuel economy was 33mpg!

around town i usually get 340 miles per tank. this is on a KA that hasn't had any love for a long while, so i think it's doing pretty good.
