so just got my nardi suede wheel....wondering if I can scotch guard it or use waterproofing stuff to prevent wear? I have leather and suede protector i got for a leather jacket. Will this work? otherwise ill probably just wrap something around it where my hand goes.

You can pick up a suede brush to keep it from being matted down.

I read sandpaper works well too.

You can use the suede protector, but as it tells you too. dont over spray it. Also, use the gloves when you drive. The oils and dirt from your hands is what screws up most suede wheels.

Good thing OP posted this topic, I wasn't gonna be "that guy" that posted it and sounded dumb, even though it's not a dumb question.

+ rep to OP for bringing it up, and + rep for those who answered.

You know back in high school or whatever, and during a class you don't understand what the teacher just said, and he/she asks if anyone has any questions, and nobody raises their hands to ask?

Deep down, you want to, because you don't understand what he/she just said, and need clarification, but then you don't raise your hand cause you don't want the other kids to be like "what a dumbass" to you forever and a day during that class from there on out?

Yeah, kinda like that... :(

OP, silicone in a spray can https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/als.aspx will help repel any moisture (water, oils, et c) and you will want to SOAK that mofo down then let it air dry and pick yourself up a suede brush (can be had @ most shoe stores on the cheap).

occasionally you will need to re-apply the silicone spray (maybe once a month) no big deal really it takes like an hour of your time. SET IT AND FOR-GET IT!! WOOOOO!!!. seriously though, just to give you an idea, i had a suede wheel in my mr2 which went through katrina. it soaked in katrina water (salt water plus whatever leaked out of the sewage treatment facility a 1/2 mile away) and then got to air-dry in the car for about a month before i could get back to it. i brushed it up with some warm water/soap let it dry, then re-applied the silicone and its still going strong in my tercel to this day and i dd with it.

go for it.

Silicone on a steering wheel? sounds like a horrible Idea.

Wear gloves. Leather steering wheels and shift knobs are consumables.

silicone on suede isnt a horrible idea. the suede absorbs what it can and the rest dissapates the waterproof properties are all that remains. i auto-x'ed the mr2 for 2 years and never had a problem holding onto the wheel with or without gloves. (the only catch is that you need to brush up the steering wheel maybe once a week, and ESPECIALLY AFTER YOU SPRAY IT so any excess will dry)

if you had a smooth leather steering wheel, silicone would be a really bad idea.

What if you have dirty driving gloves already?

Shit.

Does that mean I need to buy brand new ones?

It's not the dirt that is the problem, it is the oil from your skin the mattes the suede down and leaves the residue.
