so my question is simple, what mileage did your car have when you bought it and whats the cutoff point for a car you would be buying(s-chassis only)

my s14 had 78K (i think) when I bought it and has 87K right now (about 3 years of driving)

the reason I'm asking is that I have an se and the sunroof is destroying my headroom. I was just going to get it filled in (which is expensive) but its also an auto which is slowing my sr swap down.all of that changed as I found a local s14 (black/base) that looks to be in good condition for just over 4500. bad deal?

I'd just hate to get rid of a good condition s14 with pretty damn low miles

When dealing with cars that are at least 10 and at most 19 years old, one should hang up the pipe dream of "low mileage" (especially for reasonable cost), instead comes the idea of actually LOOKING at the cars and understanding that low mileage doesn't ALWAYS mean a car will be spotlessly perfect.

Yes sir....for the record my chassis has 142k and minimal amounts of rust...1992 S13

werd, my friend bought an 89 for $500. it only had 80k on it, but the motor was blow, suspension was blown, rust holes in the floor, engine bay, and frame rails. he later found out it only had 80k on it because it sat in a junkyard for almost 10 years.

i bought my '90 with 90k miles on it, and its literally in MINT condition. no rust, i love it.

i bought mine with 167k. it now has 238k. it has no rust.
i'm not a pussy when it comes to mileage. as long as it's been taken care of, and recent rebuilds don't hurt at all.. i'd buy a car with just about any mileage. i had an olds cutlass that had about 240k on it when i bought it. my Galaxie doesn't have a sixth digit, so i have no idea how bad the mileage is. as long as the chassis feels solid, as long as i don't find any rust, as long as it has good compression, i could really give a shit.
i bought an Acura CL a few months ago with 69000 miles. lowest mileage car i've ever owned. and i STILL had pussy friends going "wow 70000 miles, that's a lot". i guess it is, if your parents buy you everything and you don't know what you're doing.

cutt off point schmutt off pont, miles could mean nothing, if the motor has been rebuilt.
On another note, i know a guy that has 300,000 miles on a SOHC and its still kickin

$1500 for a 91 SE with NO RUST. Has 126,xxx miles on it and motor sounds perfect. I don't really care about mileage esp with an S-chasis because all the worn parts will be changed anyway. All I look for is rust. Plus I do all the work myself so it just costs me time.

With the S-chasis most people who buy it swap (or build) the motor & upgrade the suspension components so I don't see mileage becoming a major factor unless your looking to just run it stock.

mileage is a bigger factor on a daily driver, something you really don't want to dick around with too much. but on a project like an s13... who cares. aside from structural issues, you're probably going to wind up replacing anything that could be worn down by time. an energy suspension bushing kit is like a hundred bucks. big deal.

got mine on march 28th of '05, with 44,xxx on it. right now, its got just under 48,000. fucking car... stock turbo is on its way out. so that is next on the list. after that, i hope to put as many miles on it as i possibly can the rest of the year.

See, and I got my 89 coupe with engine blown and removed, already set for the twincam to go into it... Car had 195,xxx on it, has 225,xxx now, almost 3 years of driving later.
NO rust, couple dinged panels and good interior (save for that same spot on EVERY S13 driver seat).
$500.00

To the OP, look at the difference between peoples' miles at acquisition and the condition of their cars, you will see that it really makes NO difference, as much as a simple THOROUGH inspection of what you're taking on.

When I bought my S14, it had 98k on it, now it has 178k. Cut off? I don't think I would even buy another one unless its around the same milage (highly unrealistic at this time).

Bought mine with 83K. After two years of ownership, I hit 90K the other day.

I thought my vert was a low mileage example but then I saw ones with as little as 20-40K on them.

my only real concern is that the 2 I'm looking at are higher mileage, and technically lower models (base and not se) mileage isn't really a huge concern for me but I would like to keep it down when I can, ie not driving 2 miles to go buy something when I could just walk or bike there, I'm also not too keen on giving up a car with full documentation for one that could have been through hell.

my other thought was that supposedly all chassis have little tweaks in them when they get high in the mileage from just normal driving, is this untrue?

I learned with my current s14 what needs to be checked before its bought and theres no way I would buy another without a much more thorough check

(oh and btw, I don't get anything for free from my parents, just for some random reason the other cars ive driven have always been low mileage)

As long as it's a SOLID car, and it's running well, i wouldn't worry about the actual mileage.

My recently purchased coupe MAY (long story) have 250k on it. But the body is in good shape, and there is no rust.

Thats what was most important to me.

If I was in Cali, I'd have higher standards. But in the Midwest we don't have 240's rolling around like Camry's.

BUT if you have patience, then hold out for a real gem. Just be patient and you'll find one.

well i bought mine with 140k-ish on the odo but no telling what the actual milage was. took the car from Phoenix the Vegas and back and it only went up like 30 miles :hyper: besides, the high milage engine and the cracked dash, everything was in awesome condition. bought it from a mechanic who replaced a lot of the interior with NEW or close to new stuff. :wiggle:

edit: its an 89 5 speed hatch, guy was asking 1800, bought for $1500

Yes it does feel good to say "I have a shit load of miles but it still runs badass", thats the only thing to praise about the car. Bad paint, no interior lights (short in wiring system somewhere), holes in the hatch (removal of spoiler). Other than that it runs pretty solid.

Its not whats on the outside that counts its whats on the inside
