Ok so here's the deal, I know there are some people out there that have done LS1 300ZX swaps. Of course it would be ideal to use the T56 instead of the Z32 transmission, but for ease of installation some people have used the stock Z32 tranny, but with an adapter plate for the bellhousing to mate up to the LSx.

This got me thinking; is the GT-R transmission at all similar to the Z32 transmission? In other words, since it's possible to easily mate an LSx to a Z32 tranny(apparently) would it be similarly easy for a GT-R tranny?

If this is possible, then some LSx+AWD shenanigans could ensue. I'm speaking of course theoretically as this would cost alot of money that I don't have currently, but a Full Race R14-converted S14 with a twin-turbocharged LS would make for an absolutely mind-bogglingly capable street car.

This would not happen, at least not from me, for at least a few years, but this info would be very helpful in planning for the future and could maybe inspire some other forward-thinking gearheads out there to attempt this. Thanks!

This would be sweet! I'd like to see it done.

The RB25 tranny is the one similar to the Z32 tranny. The only difference is the bell housing. The RB26 tranny is a different monster.

The rb25, rb26, and Z32 transmission are all the same internally.

I have personally swapped the RB26 bell housing on to the Z32 transmission on my Z32/RB26 setup (www.rbz32.com)

The RB25 transmission and RB26 use the same bell housing.

The RB25 and Z32 transmission are not only different in the bell housing but the tail section and how the shifter is setup is completely different as well

Isn't the RB26 tranny 6 speed? Oh wait, that's the R34. K, nm. What he said, minus the 6 speed tranny part.

Thanks! So in other words, they're pretty similar, meaning that the adapter used for LS1-Z32 tranny mounting might work. Maybe you could even use the Z32 bellhousing on the GT-R tranny if the GT-R bellhousing doesn't work? I'm just kinda brainstorming here.

Thanks again!

WHOA. Hold the train here.

The GTR AWD RB26DETT Driveline is a completely different monster compared to the RB25. It is integrated into the lower pan of the rb26.

I see where you want to go with this, try the nissan hardbody pickup 4wd trans in a stick.

This will be MUCH more applicable to the S-Chassis Plus adapter plate combo.

there are LS1 awd cars in Australia from Holden and I think some of them are based on a mild performance setup, although none of those drivetrains would hold up to serious mods with an LS1 motor.

the AWD setup for the RB26 uses and oilpan that integrates a lot of drivetrain components inside the pan and by design. I dont think you will have any luck integrating the RB awd and the LS1 motor. I would think you are much better off trying to stuff the LS1 iron block truck chevy AWD setups but hey what do I know.

by the time you spend money on a twin turbocharged LS1 and get it into a 240sx, you wouldnt be looking for ways to spend even more money getting an AWD setup to work similarly to an R14, most likely. but hey more power to you. I'd think youre just much better off sticking with the RB26DETT AWD setup of the R14 as its all been done and works well and isnt any more expensive than a similarly equipped LS1 setup.

LS1s are amazing, but now in the AWD arena, yet.

Yeah I've been thinking about that too. It would require not only adapting the tranny but making a complete custom oil pan setup as well. It would require a ton of work and even more money. Still though, I can't get the idea of AWD+LSx our of my head.

Maybe the drivetrain from the new R35 GT-Rs will open up some possibilities, since they use a rear mounted transaxle it would make mounting easier(well, on the engine side of things anyways). No idea if they have drivetrain components running through the oilpan like the old ATTESSA setups though. I'll look into that.

Since it's transaxle it might even be possible to mount the LS amidships and build an ME-AWD car. That would of course require a full custom tube frame chassis and..... Uh oh here I go day dreaming again, lol. Too many ideas, not enough money.
