View Full Version : redtop SR20 in an S14?

I'm brand new, in fact this is my first post. And I may sound like a dumbass, but I am in love with SR20's. I currently own a Sentra SE, 98, and next spring I am planning to sell it for an S14. I am looking to take out the stock KA and install a DET, which again may sound retarded, but it's a personal thing.
So, I'm wondering what differences there are between the redtop and the blacktop SR20's. I am aware of the obvious differences, but what about when it comes to installing it? Anything at all that I should know about. The reason is that I found a redtop for $1500, and the blacktops are out of stock. And by the way, how much would a blacktop run me, average prices? Thanks for the help in advance-BEN

You can put a redtop on a s14. its been done. However, be careful where you buy your engines. 1500 for a red-top sounds familure, like an ebay price. THere are a lot of companies that sell crap engines. Make sure that the company you buy from is reputable. Basically, if it sounds cheap, then it probably is CHEAP. Do it right the first time, and pay the extra money, rather than do it OK the first time, and pay a hell of a lot more later.

I think thats from the FRAM oil filter commercial hHAHAHAH

ok bye

There are three different blacktops: S13, S14, and S15.

I assuming you mean the S14 blacktop. As for install all I can say it that I know two people, one with the S13 blacktop and the other with the S14 blacktop in a S14 chassis car. From what they tell me, the S14 SR is much easier to install and its worth the extra $$$. Where did you find a redtop for $1500?? is that a front clip?

Blacktops(all kinds) can run from $2000-$4000(S15 SR)....someone correct me.

I just found out that the black top came in an S13, I'm gonna assume that the S13 red and black tops are pretty much the same, pretty much. Now, how hard would it be to install a redtop S13 into a 97-98 S14? Thats my main question. What extra wiring, tubing, hardlines, etc. would I need? thanks-BEN

I recommend you go with the S14black top. I have a Red top in my S14 and it was a biatch! Wiring is completely different, half the sites that have info on wiring are wrong.
the speed sensor has to be swapped for the KA sensor, ABS I"m still trying to figure out, and the A/C compressor needs a custom bracket thingy to fit.
also, the fan shroud will not fit with a red top KA. So electric fans are need.

one thing I'm trying to figure out is if the stock electric fan is enough to cool it off. I have a Koyo rad also. I"ve seen setups with the stock electric fan and no mechanical fan.

well would an S14 blacktop bolt on in and plug up with turn key start-up? or do they need to be rewired themselves as well?

thanks a ton for the help guys, keep it comin. I'm still wondering what an S14 SR will run me? I'm pretty decided on the S14 motor, and the swap seems pretty simple. If anybody knows anyone that wants to sell their S14 kouki, let me know, my e-mail is [email protected] -BEN

Oh! Also, I'm definately going to add some aftermarket cams, either TODA or HKS. I was wondering if the Aftermarket cams will take the Variable Valve Timing out of the S14 engine?

As far as pricing details talk to davies2k on this board. Send him a PM or email him. He has a company that imports engines and frontclips. He would probably be able to answer all your questions as far as pricing, and maybe alot more.

He has a thread about the s13 front clips he just got in:
"JDM S13 front clips for sale" Topic in For Sale forum of Zilvia (http://www.zilvia.net/f/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=4;t=16528)

I believe the VTC will always be there, but someone showed me hook easy it is to disable. Just disconnect one simple plug and there you go.

S14 SR20DET front clips will start from $3000.

Just so you don't think the s13 motor is crap, I'm gonna chime in.

I paid a LOT LESS for my s13 blacktop in an s14. Installation was just as easy as an s14. Just as long as you don't do your own wiring. <- Had mine sent to heavythrottle. And the motor runs great.
Personaly I think the s14 motor is harder to work on, mainly because of the intake manny design. Changing out fuel injectors is deffinatly going to be a pain in the arse.

Remember, for the price of an s14 clip you can have an s13 motor with upgraded turbo!

Both motors are great and I adore them all the same. From reading this post it seems like people were speculating and assuming that the s14 although faster is a better all around choice.

If you plan to upgrade the turbo buy an s13
If a t28 is good enough for you buy an s14

Also the redtop sr from a s13 is older they were dicontinued in 94 iirc the redtop s13 and the blacktop s13 are the same one being newer in some cases and lower milage as well.i personaly think if you are going to upgrade get a s13 motor and you can just upgrade it a lil quicker.

Well, heard my friend installed S14 blacktop himself in his garage..maybe you guys know him..
He told me he spent $7000 of everything(even tho he installed it himself!!..unbelievable.........
i believe motor itself costs $3000, he bought brand new intercooler, radiator and stuffs...buffed up to 270whp and 300whp with ..19psi?(i believe)..
I would recommend S14 blacktop for a S14
altho so far i have only saved $2000...sigh...far way to go
and also considering the labor......sigh.......

Perfect guys! I'll say this, I'm definately planning to upgrade my motor, and with the help of a loan, I hope to have 400hp easily to the rear wheels by next summer. I'm planning on a loan between 8 and 10,000. Plus I have a partial sponsorship coming up, so that'll help.
So, farther down the road of boost (mmmm...boost) will the VTC really make a huge difference in power, enough to justify spending another $1200+ on a black top? I mean, I'll have aftermarket cams, springs and retainers, port and polish.
Also, some are saying that the S13's are just as easy to install as the S14's, and some aren't. I'm really torn. I consider myself to be fairly mechanically talented, I study automotive engineering, so I'm not a total dumbass. Plus I've been working with SR20's for the past 3 and a half years. I would like to know what you guys, the veterans, think. S14, or S13. Thanks-BEN
